Document: CS39 Version: 7 Issue Date: 04/12/14 Pathology Department 5 Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid (5 HIAA) 24 Hour Urine Sample Dietary Instructions for Patients Dietary Preparation People collecting 24 hour urine samples for 5 Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid (5 HIAA) should not eat or drink the food and beverages listed below for the 3 days before and during the collection period: Walnuts Avocadoes Eggplant Tomatoes (and juice) Plums Pineapples (and juice) 24 HOUR URINE BOTTLES ARE AVAILABLE FROM PATHOLOGY Instructions for 24 Hour Urine Collection 1. Decide a time to start (eg. 8am). Completely empty bladder at this time and discard this urine. Record time and date on instructions sticker on bottle. 2. Collect all urine passed in the next 24 hours and place in the bottle provided. Note: The 24 hour urine bottles are only available from Pathology and contain acid. Caution: Acid will cause burns if any liquid comes in contact with the skin. Any splash should be rinsed well with running water. 3. After 24 hours from the commencement time (eg. 8am the following morning), empty the bladder and place this urine in the bottle. Record time and date on the instructions sticker on the bottle. 4. It is important that the whole of the 24 hour specimen is collected. None should be discarded. Please tell us if you need us to organise an Interpreter.

Dietary Preparation

People collecting 24 hour urine samples for 5 Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid

(5 HIAA) should not eat or drink the food and beverages listed below for the 3 days before and

during the collection period:

Walnuts

Avocadoes

Eggplant

Tomatoes (and juice)

Plums

Pineapples (and juice)

24 HOUR URINE BOTTLES ARE AVAILABLE FROM PATHOLOGY

Instructions for 24 Hour Urine Collection

1. Decide a time to start (eg. 8am). Completely empty bladder at this time and discard this

urine. Record time and date on instructions sticker on bottle.

2. Collect all urine passed in the next 24 hours and place in the bottle provided.
