The Labrador Retriever can trace its roots to the coast of Newfoundland, Canada. The breed dates back to atleast the seventeenth century when they were known as the Lesser Newfoundland. The breed is believed tohave descended from the extinct St. Johns Water Dog which was a cross between native water dogs and theNewfoundland. Labrador Retrievers were initially trained to retrieve fishing nets from the cold waters of theNorth Atlantic. Fisherman brought them to England in the nineteenth century where they were lauded for theirswimming, retrieving and hunting skills. The Earl of Malmesbury is believed to have coined the name Labradorin order to differentiate them from their Newfoundland ancestors. During the 1800s, a heavy dog tax in Canadaand quarantine laws in Britain drastically cut the number of Labradors in the U.K., but a good breeding programreplenished the stock. Labrador Retrievers were recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1917.

The Labrador Retriever comes in solid black, chocolate, and yellow. The yellow varies from a pale cream toa rich red fox color. Some Labradors also have white chest blazes. The Dudley variant is where the nose ispink, though this is quite rare. Non-AKC registries sometimes recognize a Silver Variant though this may beclassed as chocolate by the AKC.

The Basenji breed are descendants of the wild dogs of ancient India. It is possible that the breed was developedin Egypt as companion dogs during the time of the Pharaohs. Drawings found in Egyptian tombs suggest thatthe Basenji dates back at least five thousand years. The Basenji is a small, lightly-built, short-backed dog, which was appreciated for its ability to hunt vermin. The Basenji has also gained a reputation as an excellentguarding, hunting and retrieving dog. Another unique trait of the Basenji is that they do not bark; althoughthey do make other dog sounds, such as whining, whimpering and growling. The breed was discovered in thelate nineteenth century by western explorers who took them back to England. In 1936 the Basenji produceddescendants that were called the Congo Terriers and in 1937 they were introduced into the United Statesby English breeders. From that point on, the breeds numbers continued to increase. The American KennelClub officially recognized the Basenji in 1943.

The Basenji coat varies between chestnut red, pure black, both, or brindle (black with red stripes). The breedis generally particolor with white markings across the chest, feet, and tail. The black mask or black saddleare also frequently seen traits in this breed.

HOW ARE KEY PHYSICAL TRAITS INHERITED?THE INFLUENCE OF BREEDS ON APPEARANCEThis report reveals the breeds detected in your dogs DNA. It also includes checklists of physical traits associatedwith these breeds. Breeds can combine their influences in countless, fascinating ways. Its a unique combinationthat makes your dog one-of-a-kind.Your dog may behave like - or strongly resemble - just one of the breeds in its makeup, but - much more commonly- your dogs looks and personality will blend aspects of these breeds. Consider the example below...

In this example, you can see how many of Frankiesphysical traits are due to a blending of breed influences.

FEATHERINGThe longer hair on thelegs, tail and around theears, is due to dominantmodifier genes availablefrom the ShetlandSheepdog.

BLACK PIGMENTThis coloring in thenose, eye rims, lips andpads on the feet is dueto one copy of the blackgene variant, availablefrom all three ancestralbreeds.

WHITE SPOTTINGThis is due to a lack of pigment andis often found in the extremities (feet, chest, face, etc.), but can also extendover more of the body. It can be due tomany genes including those found inthe three ancestral breeds here.

BRINDLE COAT COLORThe black and tan striping in Frankiescoat is a dominant trait coming fromone copy of the brindle gene variant. This is available from the ItalianGreyhound, Parson Russell Terrier andShetland Sheepdog.

SHORT HAIRThis is due to one copyof the gene variant fromthe Italian Greyhound orthe Parson Russell Terrierthat is dominant over thelong coat gene from theShetland Sheepdog.

Wisdom Panel found these breeds in our example dog Frankie:

WHAT DOES THE MIXED BREED ANCESTRY MEAN FORPATCH?

A portion of Patchs ancestry was predicted to be mixed beyond 3 generations. While it is difficult toidentify strong breed signals in this mixed portion, the 5 breeds with the strongest statistical likelihoodidentified in the analysis of your dogs DNA are listed below.

The breeds are listed by the relative strength of each result in the analysis with the most likely at the topof the list. One or more of these breeds could have contributed to the genetic makeup of the ancestorsindicated by the mixed breed icon. Note that it is highly unlikely that all these breeds are present inPatchs ancestry.

There could also be a breed or breeds present in the mixed breed component that cannot be detected withthe current database of over 200 breeds.

PREDICTED ADULT WEIGHT PROFILE:Based upon the breeds detected in Patchs ancestry and the genetic markers analyzed by Wisdom Panel Insights,as well as the information provided that Patch is Male and Neutered, we have calculated the likely weight that Patchshould reach when an adult. The Wisdom Panel Insights target weight profile is presented as a range based on theunique mix and proportion of breeds detected.

The adult weight is predicted to be between 43 - 66 lbs.

Many factors can influence an adult dogs weight, including sex and neuter status. Both of these factors have beenused to calculate the predicted weight profile. Another major influence on canine weight is body condition score, which is a factor of your dogs lifetime nutrition and exercise regimen. If your dogs body condition is different fromthe ideal body condition score, we anticipate that your dog might be under (if underweight) or over (if overweight)the weight predicted by Wisdom Panel Insights.

HOW WISDOM PANEL INSIGHTS WORKSThe process started when you sent a sample to our laboratory, where the DNA was extracted from the cells andexamined for the 321 markers that are used in the test. The results for these markers were sent to a computer, that evaluated them using a program designed to consider all of the pedigree trees that are possible in the lastthree generations. The trees considered include a simple pedigree with a single breed (a likely pure-bred dog), twodifferent breeds at the parental level (a first-generation cross), all the way up to a complex tree with eight differentgreat-grandparent breeds allowed.

Our computer used information from over 200 breeds and varieties from our breed database to fill these potentialpedigrees. For each of the millions of combinations of ancestry trees built and considered, the computer gave eacha score representing how well that selected combination of breeds matched to your dogs data. The pedigree withthe overall best score is the one which is shown on the ancestry chart. Only breeds that reached our set confidencethreshold for reporting are reported in the ancestry chart.
