Pugs are an ancient breed, dating back to the Shang Dynasty of China in the years 1766 through 1122 BC. They werekept as pets by Tibetan monks before being exported to Japan, and then later to Europe. In the late sixteenth and earlyseventeenth centuries, sailors of the Dutch East India Trading Company brought Pugs back with them to Holland. Shortlythereafter, the Pug became the official dog of the Dutch Royal family. Pugs soon became popular throughout Europe, particularly in England, Spain, Germany and France. Pugs accompanied William and Mary to the British throne in 1688and Napoleon is believed to have used a Pug to deliver messages to his wife when she was imprisoned. Pugs became verypopular in nineteenth century England as they were a favorite of Queen Victoria, who bred them whilst keeping them aspets. Pugs of that time were of the fawn or apricot color, but darker shades were introduced when an English aristocratbrought some back from China. Standards for the breed were established in the 1880s and the Pug was recognized by

the American Kennel Club in 1885.

The Pug generally comes in fawn or black, though the fawn varies from a pale cream to a more vibrant apricot color. There is also a silver variant. The pug generally has a contrasting black mask which sometimes includes black or shadedmarkings on the ears or forehead.

    EARS MUZZLE TAIL

The Shar-Pei is an early breed whose origins date back to the Han Dynasty in Southern China. The first recorded historyof the Shar-Pei is in artwork dating back to 200 BC. They were believed to have descended from the Nordic and Mastiffbreeds of ages past. Some even believe that the Chow Chow may share some heritage with the Chinese Shar-Pei, due tothe breeds characteristic black tongues. The Shar-Pei was originally bred to be a farming dog, but they were also usedto hunt and were sometimes used for dog fighting. The breed faced the threat of extinction when the communist regimein China outlawed them during the revolution. In 1978 it was recognized in the Guinness Book of Records as the rarestdog breed in existence. They were first introduced to the United States in 1966. When an article was published in 1973asking the United States to assist with the survival of the breed, American breeders responded and the numbers beganto rise. Today the Shar Pei, while not exactly common, is no longer in danger of extinction. The American Kennel Club

recognized the breed in October of 1991.

The Chinese Shar-Pei can be a range of solid colors including black, white, cream, apricot, brown, red, chocolate, brindle (black and brown striped), and blue (a gray color) with darker shading around the back and muzzle. The muzzlemay have a black mask, but the breed always has a blue-black tongue.

The Russell Terrier is also commonly referred to as the Jack Russell Terrier, referring to Reverend John Russell who, in theearly 19th century, used his fox working terriers to breed predominantly white working terriers which possessed an innateability to hunt and to flush out foxes from underground, but that would not harm or kill them. John Russells first terrier,Trump, is said to be the foundation of his strain of working terriers. It is claimed that following Russells death some ofhis bloodlines were crossed with the Welsh Corgi and other terrier breeds, creating a different type dog, the "Jack RussellTerrier." Jack Russell Terriers are a type of working terrier, which have a broad genetic make-up. The term Jack Russellhas widely been used to describe a multitude of small white terriers. John Russell maintained his strain of fox terriersbred strictly for working, and the terrier we know today is much the same as the pre-1900 fox terrier. In the USA, a Terrier

conforming to the Australian/FCI standard is simply called a Russell Terrier by the American Kennel Club.

The Russell Terrier has a smooth, rough or broken coat which is predominantly white with tan, black, or brownmarkings.

The Shih Tzu was a breed that was created in Tibet during the seventeenth century. The development of the Shih Tzuwas achieved by the crossbreeding of the Lhasa Apso and Pekingese breeds. This crossbreeding occurred when a LhasaApso was given as a gift by the Dalai Lama to the Emperor of China. The Emperor had a Pekingese in his palace and thisPekingese mated with the Lhasa, resulting in the worlds first litter of Shih Tzu puppies. Eventually, the breed becamevery popular in the Imperial Court, but in 1908 after the death of Empress Tzu Hsi, most Shih Tzu breeding came toa stop. This was further complicated by the Communist Revolution in China, which nearly caused the breed to becomeextinct. The Shih Tzu was saved, however, by a pool of 14 dogs that were introduced into England. The Shih-Tzu did notfind its way to America until after World War II, when they were brought back with American soldiers. The breed receivedofficial American Kennel Club recognition in 1969.

The Shih Tzu is a breed with a wide variety of colors, with all permissible under the breed standard. The colors can beblacks, browns, silvers, creams, and brindle (black and brown pattern) in solid, particolor or tricolor with lots of white.Black markings or a black mask are also seen in this breed.

HOW KEY PHYSICAL TRAITS ARE INHERITE

The Influence of Breeds on Appearance

This report reveals the breeds detected in your dogs DNA. It also includes checklists of physical traits associatewith these breeds. Breeds can combine their influences in countless, fascinating ways. Its the unique combinatiothat makes your dog one-of-a-kind.

Your dog may behave like, or strongly resemble, just one of the breeds in its makeup. However much more commonyour dogs looks and personality will blend aspects of these breeds. In the example below you can see how many oFrankies physical traits are due to a blending of breed influences.

    FEATHERING

The longer hair on thelegs, tail and around theears, is due to dominantmodifier genes availablefrom the ShetlandSheepdog.

    BLACK PIGMENT

This coloring in thenose, eye rims, lips anpads on the feet is duto one copy of the blagene variant, availablefrom all three ancestrabreeds.

    WHITE SPOTTING

This is due to a lack of pigment andis often found in the extremities (feet, chest, face, etc.), but can also extendover more of the body. It can be due tomany genes including those found inthe three ancestral breeds here.

    BRINDLE COAT COLOR

The black and tan striping in Frankiescoat is a dominant trait coming fromone copy of the brindle gene variant. This is available from the ItalianGreyhound, Parson Russell Terrier andShetland Sheepdog.

SHORT HAIRThis is due to one copyof the gene variant fromthe Italian Greyhound othe Parson Russell Terr

that is dominant over thlong coat gene from theShetland Sheepdog.

    MIXED BREED SIGNATURES (IF DETECTED

What Does the Mixed Breed Ancestry Mean for ELTON?

A portion of Eltons ancestry was predicted to be mixed beyond the three generations we test for. It is

difficult to identify strong breed signals in this mixed portion, so we have listed the five breeds with thestrongest statistical likelihood below.

The breeds are listed in order of strength with the most likely at the top of the list. One or more of thesebreeds MAY HAVEcontributed to the genetic makeup in the mixed breed icon(s), but it is highly unlikely thatall these breedsare present in Eltons ancestry.

Note that there could also be a breed or breeds present in the mixed breed component that cannot bedetected with the current database of over 200 breeds.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATIO

    Predicted Adult Weight Profile

Based upon the breeds detected in Eltons ancestry and the genetic markers analyzed by Wisdom Panel, as weas the information provided that Elton is Maleand Neutered, we have calculated the likely weight that Elton shoulreach when an adult. The Wisdom Paneltarget weight profile is presented as a range based on the unique mix anproportion of breeds detected.

The adult weight is predicted to be between 18 - 32 lbs.

Many factors can influence an adult dogs weight, including sex and neuter status. Both of these factors have beeused to calculate the predicted weight profile. Another major influence on canine weight is body condition scorewhich is a factor of your dogs lifetime nutrition and exercise regimen. If your dogs body condition is different fromthe ideal body condition score, we anticipate that your dog might be under (if underweight) or over (if overweighthe weight predicted by Wisdom Panel.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATIO

Thank You for Using Wisdom Panelto Uncover the Story of Your Dogs

Ancestry!Congratulations on taking the steps to learn about Eltons ancestry and to understandwhat breeds are in your mixed breed dog using Wisdom Panel! Knowing your dogs breeds

is more than a novelty - it is a medical necessity. Each breed in your poochs geneticpaw print has unique health concerns you should know about so that you can providea lifetime of excellent care.

We recommend discussing your dogs ancestry report with your veterinarian, as he or she can help you use youWisdom Panelreport to help better care for Elton. The next time you visit your veterinarian, consider asking thesquestions in addition to any you come up with on your own:

Are there any specific issues that may be relevant to my dogs well-being?

Are there any special techniques that may help in training a dog with this particular mix?

Are there any particular dietary considerations to bear in mind for a dog like mine?

How Wisdom Panel WorksThe process started when you sent a sample to our laboratory, where the DNA was extracted from the cells anexamined for the 321 markers that are used in the test. The results for these markers were sent to a computethat evaluated them using a program designed to consider all of the pedigree trees that are possible in the lasthree generations. The trees considered include a simple pedigree with a single breed (a likely pure-bred dog), twdifferent breeds at the parental level (a first-generation cross), all the way up to a complex tree with eight differengreat-grandparent breeds allowed.

Our computer used information from over 200 breeds and varieties from our breed database to fill these potentiapedigrees. For each of the millions of combinations of ancestry trees built and considered, the computer gave eaca score representing how well that selected combination of breeds matched to your dogs data. The pedigree witthe overall best score is the one which is shown on the ancestry chart. Only breeds that reached our set confidenc

threshold for reporting are reported in the ancestry chart.

Terms And ConditionsEach dog is unique and their physical and behavioral traits will be the result ofmultiple factors, including genetics, training, handling, and environment. Using

a proprietary analysis and database, Wisdom Panel2.0product can provide

insight into the breed ancestry of your dog. The Wisdom Panel2.0product isdesigned and intended to be used solely to either identify the genetic breedmakeup and predict the adult size of such a mixed-breed dog, or to confirm thegenetic profile observed in a tested dog matches a particular breed profile. Noother purpose is intended, authorized, or permitted.

Upon receipt of your sample, Mars Veterinary will analyze your dogs DNA todetermine the breed(s) present in your dogs recent ancestry. In the case of a

likely purebred dog, this will involve a comparison of genetic profile in your dogto a proposed breed. In the case of a proposed crossbred dog (i.e. a dog withancestry from two different purebred parents), this will involve determining theheritage of your dogs sire and dam. In all cases this is done with a reasonabledegree of certainty.

Mars Veterinarys testing procedures are designed to provide reliable andaccurate results. Mars Veterinary is not responsible for any errors in obtainingthe swab sample or for any injuries or loss that may occur as a result.

In the unlikely event that it is not possible to determine breed history or thaerror in the analysis occurs, liability by Mars Veterinary or related companiesindividuals is expressly disclaimed. Damages, if any, are limited to the paymactually received by Mars Veterinary for the specified analysis at issue.

Wisdom Panel2.0 is based upon the Mars Veterinary database of validbreeds. If your dog contains other breeds, it may result in the identificatiobreeds, or a combination of breeds in the database, related to the breedyour pets history.

Many countries and provinces have breed-specific ordinances and laws that

require special handling or prohibit the ownership of some dogs with a particbreed in their genetic background. Wisdom Panel2.0is not intended to be by regulatory or animal control officials to determine whether a particular b

is legislated or banned in a particular country or province. Nor is Wisdom Pa2.0intended to be used in any judicial proceedings. Rather, it is intended tused as a tool or resource in determining a dog's genetic history.
