PASTORAL ANNOUNCEMENTS 40 Days of Francis: Day 13 Pope Francis quote of the week: “There is no worse material poverty, I am keen to stress, than the poverty which prevents people from earning their bread and deprives them of the dignity of work.” Knot of the week: 8% of the population of the Diocese of Camden is unemployed. An estimated 58,000 working New Jerseyans earn less than minimum wage. We pray during this week of the 40 Days of Francis for those who struggle to find employment in the Diocese of Camden. Often, unemployment or underemployment forces families to make impossible decisions between paying bills, utilities or rent, and buying food. This week as part of 40 Days of Francis, high school students from the Catholic Diocesan high schools will help Catholic Charities transport a large donation of food to pantries throughout the diocese. They are helping untie some of the knots for families in South Jersey. This week is also Catholic Charities’ annual Justice for All Dinner, raising funds that go to direct emergency assistance for families. Learn more at CatholicCharitiesCamden.org/40Days. READINGS MASSES INTENTIONS

READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Isaiah 50:5-9a Isaiah describes the willingness of the Suffering Servant to submit to the persecution of his enemies. This willingness stems from true faith in God, and the knowledge that the Lord will always be his help. Second Reading: James 2:14-18 James states that if some one is hungry and you wish them well but do not help them, you have done them no good. He compares this to stating your faith, without backing it up with your actions. He reminds us that we must show our faith through our good works. Gospel: Mark 8:27-35 Jesus taught his disciples that as the Messiah, he had to suffer much, be put to death, and rise three days later. Peter began to disagree and Jesus reprimanded him for judging by human standards rather than by God’s. He told them that whoever would be willing to lose their life for the sake of Jesus and the gospel, will in fact preserve their life forever.

CATECHETICAL SUNDAY

September 20th at the 9:30 am Mass The Parish will Commission those members of the Faith Community who actively serve in the ministry of Catechesis. Catechists respond to the call of the Holy Spirit to serve the Church by teaching the children, youth and adults who participate in the Faith Formation process. We consider this to be their Vocation. It is vital that Catechists are recognized, commissioned and thanked on Catechetical Sunday so the Community can give witness and support their calling.

Employee Giving Campaign

DID YOU KNOW - the House of Charity is a donor

choice for many employee giving campaigns?

Many businesses will begin their Employee Giving Campaigns this month and continue to solicit donations through the fall months. Employee Giving/United Way campaigns give us an opportunity to direct our donations to the charities that best represents our beliefs, interests and social concerns.

Ask your employer for a pledge card and be sure to:

Designate the House of Charity in the Donor Choice Section

If the agency requests a code for your donor choice…these codes may be found on the House of Charity website under “Employee Giving Campaign” and in the Catholic Star Herald.

Ask to be acknowledged! This ensures our parish will receive credit toward our House of Charity goal.

Dear Parish Nurse:

I hope this letter finds you well. I am asking for your help in the development of a very important new outreach program for our parish.

As a vibrant faith community, we have grown by helping each other in our faith journey over the years through service ministries such as the St. Vincent DePaul Society, Knights of Columbus, Youth Ministry, Adult Faith Formation, Social Justice and Visiting the Sick and Homebound. In addition, our Hospitality and Liturgical Ministries have also made invaluable contributions to St. Simon Stock Parish.

All of these ministries have one thing in common: parishioners who are willing to prayerfully consider sharing their gifts for the benefit of fellow parishioners. That is why I’m writing to you today. Our lay leadership, with support from the diocese, has been asked to explore the development of a parish nursing ministry.

In our diocese, the practice of parish nursing is guided by the American Nurses’ Association (ANA) Faith Community Nursing Scope and Standards of Practice (2005). Roles that a parish nurse assumes within a parish are influenced by the needs of the community and the expertise of the parish nurse[s]. Such a ministry would serve our own parish in a number of ways. Some of the roles that are based on the ANA Guidelines are health counselor, health educator, referral agent, advocate, integrator of faith and health, and coordinator of volunteer services.

I am not asking you to volunteer at this time; only to come to an informational meeting which will be held on Tuesday, September 29th at 7:30 PM in the Parish Meeting Center so that you can help us assess if a ministry is needed in our parish. If there is enough support from nurses like you, then we will determine how to move forward together.

Please take a moment to consider attending the September 29th. informational meeting and reach out to me either by phone or email. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me as well. Thanks for your consideration in this important ministry.

Sincerely,

Deacon John Deacon John Rich [email protected] (856) 229-1273
