LIGHT UP A BULB Once again this year, we are offering the congregation the opportunity to light a Christmas Bulb in memory of loved ones. This commemorative program has been well received in past years and we are hoping that we will have all the bulbs lit for our Christmas services. If you would like to participate, please contact the church office 726-8775. Christmas Bulbs

In loving memory of Victor L. Murrin from Pauline and the family. In loving memory of Brenda Murrin Squires.

In loving memory of Gordon and Peter, Moses & Lillian and Blanche Goobie from the Halliday’s.

Requests for Home Communion If you know of someone who is unable to attend worship but would still like to receive communion please let us know. We want to coordinate these visits as close to when we, as a community of faith, participate in communion. Rev. John will happy to reach out to those members or adherents to arrange this ministry.

Advent Candle Lighting GSUC

This year, for 2019, we want to directly engage our younger folk in our tradition of

lighting the Advent Candles. The prayers were taken from Gathering (ACE

2018/2019) which were written by Ryan McNally of St. Mark’s U.C. in Cannifton,

Ontario. The format will be that we sing our Advent Hymn so our young spirits

can come forward with Rev. John to light the Advent Candle…. Rev. John and

Young Spirits will say together “We light the candle of ….” He may light the

candles himself, and/or he may also ask one of our younger folk to light the

candle with him/for him. Rev. John will have a short discussion with our young

spirits and then it will be followed by a Congregational Advent Prayer that will be

said in unison. After the prayer is completed, our young spirits can leave the

sanctuary to attend Sunday school.

Wishing each of you a wonderful season of Advent, to help prepare our hearts for

the coming of the Christ-child.

Booking Requests

We realize that GSUC is a very busy place and all of our various spaces,

including our Sanctuary, JPMOC, Gym, Room C, etc., are in high demand.

Some activities occur regularly and are anticipated each year, month, week or

daily. However, there are various times in the year when there are more than

normal activities/ events happening (December month and May month are good

examples) and some schedules have to be reviewed and/or adjusted.

Consequently, to ensure that there isn’t a clash with scheduling, it is really

important to check with the office to check for the availability of a certain

space. We are asking our congregation to put this best practice in place, so when

a group is looking to have a special activity or rent a particular space, it needs to

be arranged through the office. By checking first, prior to making your plans, it

should help avoid any frustration and/or disappointment. This policy has been in

place now for several years and when applied in a consistent manner, it works

very well.

Thank you for your cooperation,

GSUC Church Management Team

OUTREACH AT GEORGE STREET

UNITED CHURCH

Our Beginnings

The Soup Kitchen at George Street United Church

was opened in the Jimmy Pratt Memorial Outreach

Centre with the support of Kathy LeGrow. Since its

inception in January 2002, the Jimmy Pratt Memorial

Outreach Centre has served in excess of 200,000 meals in

the seventeen years.

Our Future

Thanks to the patronage of Elinor Gill Ratcliffe,

Corporate sponsors, government program support and the

generosity of our congregation, our Soup Kitchen

expanded to include an Internet Access Centre based on the

results from a survey of outreach center patrons. The

outreach center continues to expand to meet the needs of

residents of the greater St. John’s area in particular

residents of the downtown core. A Senior’s Inclusion

Program was introduced in 2010 and a Winter Hot
