St Peter’s Basilica is the world’s largest Basilica of Christianity, nested into the heart of the Vatican City.

St. Peter's Basilica stands on the traditional site where Peter - the apostle who is considered the first pope - was crucified and buried. St. Peter's tomb is under the main altar and many other popes are buried in the basilica as well. Originally founded by Constantine in 324, St. Peter's Basilica was rebuilt in the 16th century by Renaissance masters including Bramante, Michelangelo and Bernini.

Santa Maria degli Angeli Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, better known by its shorter name Santa Maria degli Angeli, is a unique Renaissance church in Rome. In 1541, a Sicilian priest, Fr. Antonio Lo Duca, had a vision of angels in the ruins of the Baths of Diocletian. As a result, Pope Pius IV (1559-1565) ordered that a church be built within the Baths. The church was designed by Michelangelo, who began work in 1563 but died a year later in 1564. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to the angels, and to the Christian slaves who died building the baths. Like most churches in Rome, Santa Maria degli Angeli is filled with art and monumental tombs and also has some holy relics. In the left transept, the new Chapel of St Bruno was constructed as part of the restoration works for the 1700 Jubilee. On the left side is the Meridian Line, a sundial laid down along the meridian that crosses through Rome, at latitude 15º.

Santa Caterina d'Alessandria Santa Caterina d'Alessandria is a Gothic-style, Roman Catholic church in Pisa. It is mentioned for the first time in 1211, then associated with a hospital. The current edifice was built between 1251 and 1300, commissioned by St Dominic himself, and entrusted to the friars of his order.

Additional Information

CONCERT DRESS: Each choir is to wear their usual formal concert dress for the Mass at St Peter’s and the Gala Concerts. However if you would prefer, then concert blacks would be fine – -ladies: neck to toe, shoulders and upper arms need to be covered and dresses/skirts should be full length. They may also wear trousers if they’d prefer. -men: black trousers, jacket (optional), white shirt and tie, or black shirt. WHEN VISITING CHURCHES -women must have knees and shoulders covered -men must wear long trousers -men are not permitted to wear hats CATHOLIC CHURCHES: Please be reminded that when you are in Catholic Churches for rehearsals and concerts, modest and respectful behaviour is expected i.e. loud and raucous conversation, shouting and other outbursts are to be avoided. Catholic churches are always active places of prayer even when services are not being held so your peaceful respect for those who are there to pray is greatly appreciated. WATER: Performers should be sure to bring their own bottled water with them each day. It is a good idea to buy a bottle at the start of the tour and refill it as necessary from public fountains or at your hotel.
