Oliver Scofield President Kiconcerts 3260 E Woodmen Road Colorado Springs USA

8 February 2011

Dear Oliver

Thank you for your interest in providing quality ensembles to perform for the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games events. I would be interested to know what ensembles you may be able to suggest and I look forward to working with you to see what opportunities we might be able to offer these groups.

As we discussed, these groups would be voluntary performers and would not be remunerated by LOCOG.

After the end of March 2011, I will be in a better position to let you know where groups can best be staged however it may be helpful to start assessing interest from ensembles to perform for London throughout 2012.

We should be grateful if you would keep confidential any information about the staging of these ensembles until we finalize our programming decision making and not make these public at this stage.

I look forward to our further discussions. Yours sincerely

Craig Hassall Artistic Advisor

JoIn Me In londonKIconcerts continues its tradition of offering exceptional music celebrating the Olympic ideals as we look towards London in 2012.

Join me as we take the stage to share Beethoven’s inspiration through his choral Opus of the 9th Symphony. We will Light The Fire Within, and proclaim the Olympic Hymn. Performing other well known pieces associated with the Olympics: Call of the Champions, O Fortuna, Bugler’s Dream, You Are The Light, Fanfare For The Common Man we will be the embodiment of One World, One Dream as we herald the Olympic Games within a month of the Opening Ceremony.

Fire Within, a Concert of International Friendship and Goodwill, is a choral tribute to the Olympic movement. It exemplifies, through music, the transformational potential of the Games. Fire Within presents music eliciting the best intent we as individuals have to offer to our world - a spirit from within each of us to make the world a better place.

It is a privilege to be able to invite you to join me in London during the Olympic year. This invitation is being offered based on your choir’s tradition of excellence. Performing a monumental repertoire with the North American Festival Chorus & Orchestra is an extraordinary possibility. I would be honored if you could give this opportunity serious consideration.

Kind regards, Eric Dale Knapp

eRIC dale KnaPPEric Dale Knapp is a dynamic conductor whose commitment and energy empower the musicians he leads to give performances that stir the souls of his audiences. Maestro Knapp’s mastery of the repertoire spans the full spectrum, from fresh, authentic interpretations of traditional works to visionary performances of multimedia works of the new millennium. A versatile musical leader, equally adept with Classics and Pops, Knapp’s finely honed

ability to communicate through both gesture and speech place him at the forefront of the rising conductors of his generation.

In 2001 Mr. Knapp’s Carnegie Hall debut met with critical acclaim. International appearances have included being the first American to perform a series of organ recitals at the International Bach Festival in Warsaw, Poland; being guest conductor for the International Advent Sing in Vienna, Austria; conducting the Vratsa Philharmonie of Bulgaria in the Bulgarian premiere of Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring Suite; and serving as guest conductor with the Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonie and Kromeriz Chamber Orchestra in the Czech Republic, and the Basel Academic Orchestra in Switzerland. His successful concerts in such distinctive concert environments as Carnegie Hall, The Sydney Opera House, Shanghai’s Oriental Art Center, The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Dvorak Hall and Vienna’s famed Musikverein have given him a special place within the international musical community.

Knapp’s wealth of experience spans the breadth of the musical world, having served as Music Director and Sr. Organist at Faith Lutheran Church in Des Moines, IA and as Conductor-in-Residence at MidAmerica Productions, where he conducted the New England Symphonic Ensemble and Festival Chorus annually at Carnegie Hall. He has enjoyed success as a Music Educator at elementary, secondary and collegiate levels, and as a conductor of community and professional choral and orchestral organizations. Mr. Knapp is a graduate of Drake University where he was appointed a Drake Fellow in conducting and has studied at The Juilliard School. He has pursued professional study with such luminaries as Jorge Mester, John Alexander, Helmuth Rilling, Aimee Beckmann-Collier, Vincent LaSelva, Kirk Trevor, Tsung Yeh, Gary Fagan, and Johannes Schlaefli. Carnegie Hall has recognized Mr. Knapp as one of the “rising generation of choral and orchestral leaders,” inviting him to take part in their annual Professional Conductors’ workshops with Robert Shaw.

Most recently Mr. Knapp conducted the triumphal closing concert of the Perform in Harmony with Olympic Spirit Festival celebrating the 2008 Beijing Olympics which featured 600 singers with the KI North American Festival Chorus, the Youth Chorus of the Tianjin Conservatory and the Tianjin Symphony Orchestra on July 3, 2008.

continuing the olympic performance tradition

RePeRToIRe noTesIn music we see the past, live in the present and look to the future. As the London Olympics inspire the next generation to be better humanitarians and stewards of all good things, Fire Within presents the best of humanity through great music. The Concert of International Friendship and Goodwill, a Choral Tribute to the Olympic movement under the leadership of Maestro Eric Dale Knapp, exemplifies through music, the transformational potential of the Olympic Games. Fire Within presents music that elicits the best intent that we as individuals have to offer to our world - a spirit from within each of us to make the world a better place. The program sets the philosophical tone of hope and celebrates the universal language of music with repertoire that has celebrated world events for centuries from generation to generation.

With the exception of Carl Orff, all of the composers of the opening works of the concert are Americans whose works have been composed for the Olympic Games or world events.

Aaron Copland spent his student years in the early 1920s in Paris, studying with the great French composition teacher Nadia Boulanger. It was she who encouraged him to find individuality in his compositions. The well known concert opener, Fanfare for the Common Man, was written in 1942 to honor those involved in the action of World War II.

We first hear the powerful voices of our Festival Chorus in John Williams’ Call of the Champions, which was the official theme of the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City. Upon hearing the first performance, Jackson Braider observed, “It sounds like all the heroes coming down from Olympus and chanting together.”

The choral-orchestral drama continues with the opening movement, “O Fortuna,” from German composer Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, which ranks with the finale of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony as one of the most iconic works of the Western classical canon.

We return to John Williams, probably best known to the world for his numerous film scores, most especially Star Wars. Through Call of the Champions Williams masterfully combines Leo Arnaud’s Bugler’s Dream (written for the 1968 Games in Grenoble), with his own Olympic Fanfare and theme, which he wrote for the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

Peter de Mets One World, One Dream (2008 Beijing Olympics), David Foster; Thompson/Lavender Light the Fire Within (2002 Salt Lake City Olympics) and Mark Hayes You Are the Light (a choral setting of the Olympic Fanfare) are pieces written with reference to a specific Olympiad event presenting the ideals of goodwill from culture to culture. The composers are contemporary musicians working within the popular culture of 21st century commercial/classical music.

LONDON: 2012 The Fire Within Festival

The “Olympic Tribute” concludes with Leonard Bernstein’s Olympic hymn, composed for the 1981 International Olympic Congress in Baden-Baden. Set to a text by Günter Kunert, the Olympic Hymn is heard here in an English translation by the American Poet Laureate Richard Wilbur. The final stanza of the Olympic Hymn is especially apt: “May anthems played to celebrate the victories won by every state sing too of concord and harmony, and show the world what it might be.”

Beethoven Symphony no. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 A product of the Enlightenment, Beethoven had long been captivated by and contemplated setting to music Friedrich Schiller’s “Ode to Joy.” Christopher Gibbs writes, “Schiller’s famous words state that in a new age, the old ways will no longer divide people and that ‘all men shall become brothers.’ Since its premiere in 1824, performances of the Ninth Symphony have become almost sacramental occasions, as musicians and audiences alike are exhorted to universal fraternity.” Indeed, Beethoven’s novel inclusion (in the last movement) of a solo vocal quartet and chorus represents his ultimate commitment to the communication of this message of hope and unity.
