From Our Mission and Educational Philosophy Pasadena Waldorf School recognizes the spiritual nature of the human being and presents a Waldorf curriculum designed to cultivate the child’s unfolding and awakening capacities, based on Rudolf Steiner’s view of child development. We educate each child to embrace the wonder and challenge of the world while achieving academic proficiency. We nurture each child’s imagination while educating the intellect and encouraging the development of a healthy body and social life. We teach so that each child might become a confident, capable person with integrity and a sense of social and environmental responsibility. We educate students to arrive at concepts through imaginative, artistic, and experiential activities. We embrace the opportunities afforded by our beautiful campus, the nearby San Gabriel Mountains, and Southern California’s wealth of landscapes and cultures.

Educating for the future

“Our highest endeavor must be to develop free human beings who are able of themselves to impart purpose and direction to their lives.” —Rudolf Steiner

“If you’ve had the experience of binding a book, knitting a sock, playing a recorder, then you feel that you can build a rocket ship—or learn a software program you have never touched. It’s not bravado, just a quiet confidence. There is nothing you can’t do. Why couldn’t you? Why couldn’t anybody?” —Peter Nitze, Waldorf and Harvard graduate, and Director of an aerospace company

Pasadena Waldorf School is proud to be part of a powerful educational movement with over 90 years of experience, and nearly 1,000 Waldorf schools worldwide.

Giving and receiving, two sides of the same very human act, play out on a daily basis at the Pasadena Waldorf School. Parents entrust their children each morning to teachers who receive these students with warm enthusiasm. Younger children give their hands to each other, forming a circle to sing and recite, or heading off on a walk around the campus. Older children offer up their thoughts in a lesson or discussion, sharing what has come to live inside, receiving insights from each other in the greatest giving and receiving of all: the conversation. What is the Pasadena Waldorf School if not a grand and glorious platform for conversing? If you talk to most parents, they will refer to the first conversations they had when visiting the school in the process of making their decision to send their children to us. The give and take of conversation, which includes both listening and speaking from the heart, indeed informs the very essence from which the life and soul of Pasadena Waldorf School springs.

The Pasadena Waldorf School takes seriously the vision of Rudolf Steiner, not only in our implementation of the curriculum, but also in the administration of school business. Dr. Steiner wanted the schools to be run by the teachers working together to form curriculum, to hire, evaluate, mentor and support our teachers, to develop the picture from which the growth and development of the school can progress. The College of Teachers is a group of faculty members dedicated to the task of carrying our school, and striving to make decisions that will benefit the children, parents, and instructors who make up our community. Teachers meet on a weekly basis to study and converse about our curriculum, to listen to each other’s experiences, to help each other in times of crisis, to give to the whole and to receive from each other in a continuing cycle of unfolding growth. The College of Teachers

also meets in a weekly rhythm, taking on the staffing of the entire faculty, the development of curriculum, overseeing the school’s health and development using a decision-making process that relies on conversation.

Naturally, in any process of growing, there will be setbacks, pitfalls, and difficulties to meet and overcome. Our past year certainly had events that challenged the College of Teachers, the whole faculty, and the Board of Trustees. But, as we all believe, in the end, that a problem can be turned into an opportunity for change, the school weathered the storms, and developed new forms for working together. Both the College and the Board moved to group rather than chairperson leadership, and the College Leadership Group and the Board Leadership Group took up guidance and management issues for the school. Together, these groups successfully devoted energy to developing thorough communication, that is, healthy conversations, between various parts of the school, and carried out the responsibilities formerly left to the chairs. The 2011-2012 school year saw the High School triumphantly prepare for its beginning, witnessed enrollment increases throughout the school, and experienced plans for new ways of working with ad-hoc committees and mandate groups to expedite more effectively the business of the school.

Perhaps the greatest gift we are given in the end is the possibility for us to work and live in a truly human environment where problems become pathways to development, and blessings remind us to be grateful for the gifts we receive.

At first blush, the simple act of imagining the future involves nothing more than dreaming and creating a mental image. Yet, the practical reality of making a dream come true is a juggling act, at times a high-wire act, and requires the handling of an elaborate and interwoven matrix of moving parts. This is the paradigm that comes to mind when considering the work of the Board of Trustees in 2011-2012. With our school having reached a level of stability and maturity, coupled with a strong-willed and committed community, the dream to complete the Pasadena Waldorf School program through high school was on course. Almost nothing can describe the feeling as we prepared to open the doors of the high school on the campus of William Carey International University, and to welcome the largest pioneer class a new Waldorf High School has seen in a decade.

Beginning in July, 2011, under the capable stewardship of Board Chair Ron Manzke, we continued on a quest to self-educate, illuminate aspects of the organization, test our mettle, and delve into challenging questions such as, “What is our capacity to work in true collaboration with the governing bodies in the school? How can we balance the health of the Lower School with the evolution of the Upper School? How can we envision, plan, and prepare for a healthy and vibrant future?” Working with the Strategic Planning Group, Ron Manzke enlisted the help of a professional strategic planning consultant, resulting in a survey of our community to identify two major priority topics for discussion at an invited 18-person workshop. A group of dedicated parents, faculty and staff dove into workshops covering the areas of enrollment, communications, and parent education during a long day of lively and thoughtful discourse. Shortly thereafter, Mimi Devens visited as a licensed therapist and consultant to work with faculty, staff and board members on communication issues. A Master Site Planning workshop involved interested members of the community, including some of our students, as we took a look at the future, and started envisioning our physical site. High School Consultants Douglas Gerwin and Betty Staley came to work with us to discuss the many ways we would need to adapt to our new High School from a Board perspective. A new graphic identity emerged, allowing us to create a new logo and improve our branding. We worked

through phases of our first ever Capital Campaign, connecting to alumni families and grandparents in order to fill out our fundraising picture, as we reached new heights in major gift funding while laying the groundwork for future growth. Our community began to galvanize around the idea that we were our own best resource and that as we came together, we had the ability to make big things happen. In November, Lynn Kern shared her expertise as a Waldorf school administrator during her discussion with the Board of Trustees about governance changes as a Waldorf school matures. The Board asked the College to determine what “full” enrollment meant for each class providing for us a better picture of our enrollment goals. Our Parent Council hosted lectures at Pasadena City College, where approximately 300 parents from Waldorf and beyond joined together for spirited educational evenings. We had a full turnout for an illuminating talk by visiting Waldorf Science teacher Michael D’Aleo. Our gifts began to emerge, arriving in many shapes and sizes. The dream was beginning to take form. In December of 2011, we received our first prospective student application to Pasadena Waldorf High School.

January brought the winds of change. After capably serving as PWS Administrator for five years, Carolyn Leach tendered her resignation to return to her vocation as a writer. Karen Livingston stepped back as Chair of the College of Teachers and a new leadership model emerged as a three-person team, encouraging greater involvement from the entire faculty and improving overall communication. Almost concurrently, having chaired the board since 2009, Ron Manzke stepped back from his position. Inspired by the College’s emerging leadership model, the Board of Trustees also implemented a three-person chair group. Following a month of graceful transition, both groups of three began meeting monthly, allowing for healthy and transparent communication through this new and encouraging governance model. A Search Committee formed with representation from Board, College, faculty, and parent body, to conduct a national search which ultimately led to the hiring of Administrator Daniel Hindes in June.

Spring brought forth more gifts from our community. Following on the heels of our most financially successful Elves’ Faire to date, our Spring Extravaganza launched the public phase of Realizing the Vision: The Campaign for Pasadena Waldorf School. The event was held at a theater on the campus of our emerging high school at William Carey International University and featured performances by teachers, parents, students and alumni, drawing a crowd of over 500 and raising $220,000 in pledges and donations in a single evening. The campaign also generated two major grants in the spring; one was for much-needed electrical upgrades to Scripps Hall. The other, generously donated from the Judith L. Chiara Charitable Trust, launched a much desired renovation to the Eurythmy Room which will be renamed the Community Room.

In 2011-2012, our dreams were big and we rose to the challenge. Our gifts are plentiful. This education is a gift to our children. Our community is a gift to ourselves. The future is ours to imagine.

Working towards the opening of Pasadena Waldorf High School for many years, it is wonderful to reflect upon the many gifts that brought us to where we are now. The 2011-2012 school year began with the realization that escrow for the Mendocino site may not close in time for our high school to open there, and the search began for another, temporary site. Fortunately, we found space on the William Carey International University campus and began to plan our high school space in earnest. High School Committee Chair John Dale’s expertise and wisdom as an architect and planner proved invaluable as we drew up floor plans for our classrooms and offices. We received our first applications to the new high school from Sam Glaze’s 8th grade class. As Lead Teacher Corby Gallegos conducted the student interviews alongside Sam Glaze, it was exciting to see our very first high school class begin to take shape.

The high school office was also busy developing relationships with feeder schools, participating in High School Options Nights, and hosting open houses. The work of growing the Class of 2016 had begun, and continued throughout the winter months. Through the hard work and dedication of the High School Staffing Committee and the High School Mandate Group, we hired eight members of our high school faculty before our January Open House. As the faculty grew, it was quite a gift to be able to present an outstanding faculty of accomplished individuals to prospective families.

With an extensive amount of work to accomplish before the high school’s opening, it was the gift of experience that helped manage and guide our efforts. The College of Teachers lent their lower school experience to pedagogical questions and concerns. Betty Staley, from the Rudolf Steiner College, and Douglas Gerwin, from the Center for Anthroposophy, both continued to work with our school and share their experience and advice concerning new high school efforts. Other Southern California Waldorf schools also offered help and input that strengthened and informed various administrative efforts.

As the school year came to a close, the high school received perhaps the greatest of our many gifts that year: the tangible affirmation of support from our community. The Spring Extravaganza was a marvelous event -- made possible by faculty, staff, parents, and students -- that invigorated and reinforced our push to complete the Pasadena Waldorf High School program. In an impressive gesture of dedication and validation, our first-ever capital campaign was an incredible success. The gifts that we received and enjoyed in the 2011-2012 school year truly are gifts that will continue to give for years to come.

The main focus of Parent Council is to create community by supporting Parent Education and Community Building opportunities for PWS. Looking back on the 2011-2012 school year, we were able to accomplish much in these two areas.

The fall season started with Parent Council hosting Back-to-School Day and the Hoe Down. These festive and joyful events set the tone for the school year. Following these events, Parent Council hosted a lecture entitled Turning Education on its Head by Douglas Gerwin at Pasadena City College. The lecture was well attended by the PWS community and by many people from the greater community as well. The Parent Council provided vital assistance to the Elves’ Faire Committee and assisted the Admissions Office in hosting the Open House in January. Douglas Gerwin returned to PWS in the Spring for another Parent Council sponsored lecture, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Once again there was a packed house! A Parent Hike, Coffee on the Lawn, and Coffee and Gratitude rounded out the year. Our final gift was to provide funds for the revitalization of the PWS website. Parent Council continues to find ways to further engage our vibrant, passionate, and creative community.

Thank you, Parent Council Representatives, for the commitment and hard work you gave to the community and school. Your participation is truly a gift to the school! We also wish to thank the Board of Trustees, the College of Teachers, and the PWS Faculty and Staff for supporting the efforts and goals of the Parent Council. Parent Council looks forward to meeting the needs of the parent body for years to come!

The spirit of philanthropy within our community is extraordinary. Looking back at the 2011-2012 school year, it is clear that we came together to imagine an exciting future. The launch of our first capital campaign led us to examine our values and define, refine, and clarify our vision. This process reaffirmed that this school community has its values right regarding children and education. And those values are surrounded by the passion and dedication of teachers, staff, parents, alumni families, grandparents, and businesses. We are humbled each and every day by the commitment and support that flows forth from our community. With the outstanding leadership of Capital Campaign Chair Gildart Jackson and Vice Chair Tanya Mink, the members of the Capital Campaign Committee took our fundraising efforts to new heights during the 2011-2012 school year. Through Realizing the Vision: The Campaign for Pasadena Waldorf School, our community was able to raise the necessary funds to improve our Mariposa site, support the high school program and acquire the Mendocino property. With commitments totaling over $4.3 million, our first capital campaign made for an exciting and historic year. The year ended with Extravaganza, an extraordinary event which raised $220,000 in pledges and donations for Realizing the Vision. With the leadership of PWS parents Gretchen Bailey, Blake Bailey, and Gildart Jackson, it truly was a spectacular night that will never be forgotten.

Our Development Committee worked with creative vision and energetic passion to provide vital funding for our annual goals. With the capable guidance of Annual Gift Chair Gildart Jackson, we were able to raise over $140,000 for our operating budget. Under the leadership of Development Coordinator Lisa McDaniel and Elves’ Faire Chair Ivy Reynolds, our amazing Elves’ Faire Committee aptly guided our entire parent body in hosting over 3500 visitors to the 26th Annual Elves’ Faire. This beloved event netted over $70,000 to be put towards upgrades and maintenance for our historic Mariposa campus. Our work with grandparents, alumni, community outreach, and grant-writing continued to blossom and grow, as did our Produce Collective and Alumni Tuition Assistance Fund. In my position as Director of Development, I have the privilege of witnessing daily gifts from our community. We give of our time and resources because we are educating children for the future. We are nurturing the imagination in our children today so that they may become the thinkers for tomorrow. We are educating for hope, peace, truth, and uprightness. Together, we will surely change the world, one student at a time.

Thank you for your support. Every gift makes a difference.

Funding Our Values“I believe that Waldorf schools are seeds for a new society, not only because of their curriculum and because they educate children to be healthy, creative adults, but because in their activities and practices they embody a deep inner wisdom, a new world view which celebrates the human being as a responsible steward of the earth and member of a life-affirming society.” —Christopher Schaffer, PhD; from his book Partnerships of Hope, Building Waldorf School Communities

“I feel so blessed... and every day observe the sunshine in my child’s eagerness to learn, and to use her imagination. We could not have had this experience without your valued and generous support.” —Mother of a Grade 3 Alumni Tuition Assistance Scholarship Recipient

“I give to PWS because my children have received outstanding academic educations. That is what I expect from any education I would seek out for them. I give again because the education they receive here recognizes and respects my children as individuals while teaching them that they are members of a family, class, community, society, and that they are citizens of this world. I give because in doing this, PWS encourages my children to know themselves and to express themselves through music, painting, carving, words and actions. PWS asks them to consider how the things that they do affect those around them, and how those actions impact our world.”—Steve Williams, Current Parent and Alumni Parent
