Dear Waldorf School of Philadelphia Family and Friends,

I wish you a warm welcome to spring.

If you are like me, you cherish this time of year for its vibrancy, beauty, and ability to inspire. The spring season is also such a fascinating nexus of the present, past, and future - a time that enables one to focus on the moment, prompts one to appreciate the past, and stimulates one’s imagination for what is to come. When reflecting on the state of our school, I cannot help but draw parallels between the wonders of spring and the current developmental stage of our school. Like plants in springtime, our school is presently poised to come into full bloom.

The completion of our second successful school year at our amazingly beautiful campus is upon us and we continue to improve and grow. Like observing a newly forming blossom on a tree, when embarking on this transformational stage of development, one often reflects on how things have come to be. For us, this means honoring and appreciating the deep and intricate root systems that have been cultivated over the past twenty years. These roots enable new growth, nourish the minds and bodies of our students, and foster sustainability. For this, we have hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals to thank for the seeds they have planted and sowed to bring the school to this point.

Spring also is a time to take stock of the beauty and resources that surround us and envision the promise of the future. Similarly, for our school, this means recognizing the fruit of all of our hard work and creativity, and celebrating the fact that we have reached a new level of maturity. Like a budding garden, there is so much for us to be proud of and a palpable sense of excitement in the air for what tomorrow will hold.

As we enter into this new developmental phase, we do so with greater purpose and clarity than ever. To help us chart our path, we recently embarked on a revision to our strategic plan. Through the spring, summer and fall, we will be working diligently to craft our blueprint for a prosperous future. Thus far, this exercise has afforded us the time to think deeply about our school’s strength, areas for improvement, opportunities and needs. Like any garden, there are times when we must make changes, reinvest in what is working, seek and embrace new ideas, and protect key attributes in order to meet one’s goals. This is precisely what we hope to be doing through this process.

As we enter into a new lifecycle, we hope to do so with you. The work of tending to a healthy garden is ongoing and we can only do it together. We want to thank you for your contributions to date and hope we can count on your continued support.

Sincerely,

Anthony DeGuzmanExecutive Director

Brave and true I will be,Each good deed sets me free.

Each kind word makes me strong.

I will fight for the right,I will conquer the wrong.

fund-a-need giving backEach spring we come together for an evening of fun to raise our paddles in support of our kids and their beloved school. Good music, one-of-a-kind items to bid on, food and biodynamic wine weave together to ensure that a wonderful time is had by all.

A special initiative of the auction is our Fund-A-Need, which allows us to highlight a special project for which to raise funds. Together in April 2016 over 30 parents, teachers, grandparents, alumni parents, and staff raised their paddles for a total of $10,000+ in order to make our dream of a 20 foot custom made steel slide come true.

When we join together we can make our dreams a reality.

[Slide designed and fabricated by Iron Studio, Ltd.]

At Philly Waldorf, we give back to our own school community and to the city in which we live.

Philadelphia is a diverse and dynamic place and home to the largest national event organized for the

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. In January each year we join more than 140,000 volunteers to support Face to Face, a multi-service organization

serving the most vulnerable members of the Germantown community of Philadelphia where our

school is located.

Face to Face serves more than 2,500 people living in “deep poverty”—that is, a family of four

living off of $11,700 a year. Each January we come together and pack hundreds of toiletry kits

and snack bags for the people who visit Face to Face. After nearly a decade of building our relationship with Face to Face, our students,

teachers, parents, and staff continue the mutually transforming and beneficial work to support our

neighbors living in Philadelphia. Join us to give back on January 15, 2018

If we will make the right choice, we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our world into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.

- Martin Luther King, Jr., “Beyond Vietnam”, April 4,1967, Riverside Church, New York City
