a symbol of community Hawaiian myth traces the first human being as the younger sibling of the kalo (taro) plant, and the growth and development of this sacred plant also reflects the connections and relationships of the ‘ohana nui (extended family). Cultivation of kalo brings communities together and supports a relationship not only between people but with the `aumakua (ancestors) and the ‘aina as well. This fundamental relationship between kalo and people is the basis for the respect and care that the Hawaiians have for the kalo. It is the ultimate symbol of community. Hawaiians believe that if the earth is cared for the kalo will flourish, and if the kalo flourishes so too will the people.

At HWS, we see this ancient wisdom revealed in coming together to care for our

A message from Jocelyn Romero Demirbag, Chair of School

In the early 1990’s, Rene Querido was the keynote speaker at a Waldorf conference on our campus. A former long-time director of teacher training at Rudolf Steiner College, Secretary of the

Anthroposophical Society in America, and mentor to many of our teachers, Querido described Haleakala Waldorf School as an unpolished “jewel of the Pacifi c.”

Fifteen years later, HWS has grown by 60 students, put up a new building, built an amphitheater, ex-panded its campus, and stands as

a leading edge Waldorf school within the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America. It has been my honor and privilege to help polish this gemstone of a school over the past 10 years, and to assist in uncovering its brilliance. Located on one of the world’s most sacred places, the House of the Sun, it is only fi tting that HWS shine as radiantly as its namesake and as a beacon within the center of the Pacifi c Rim.

In this last decade, HWS has succeeded in truly connecting the deep spirituality of Waldorf education with the mana of this place and of the Hawaiian culture. It is this connection that most profoundly realizes Steiner’s vision of strengthening the power of the universe within each individual child. It is why Querido describes Waldorf graduates as creative artists with worldwide interests, a great interest in people vs. things, “and a great sense of compassion and wanting to help.” Waldorf graduates are peo-ple who make a diff erence in our community and in our world.

To each of you who has helped to build HWS I extend a sincere mahalo. Your gifts continue to grow within each child and within each family so that our school is like the lo’i kalo. Your gifts have created community.

Malama kekahi i kekahi - take care of one another.

Aloha no,

Jocelyn Romero DemirbagHWS Chair of School, 1995 - 2006

04

At Haleakala Waldorf School we are creating a culture of laulima (working together toward a common purpose), and we depend on our partnership with the school community to allow us to eff ectively meet our goals. Gifts of all sizes directly impact the lives of our children. They promote the development of our students not only as scholars but, more importantly, as human beings of character.

The generosity of our community provides funds vital to making Waldorf education on Maui a reality. Gifts from the community help make up the critical diff erence between tuition income and the actual cost of educating a Waldorf student. These funds help

to pay for a variety of educational programs, capital improvements, special projects and other expenses.

Donors may request that their contributions go toward specifi c programs and initiatives or they may be “unrestricted,” allowing faculty, staff and the Board of Directors to

designate funding where it will have the most signifi cant impact. We extend our deepest gratitude for each gift and the trust in HWS that each gift represents.

A fundamental difference

Giving to the HWS Tuition Assistance Program is a gift that can make the most direct and fundamental impact on the life of a child. It is the gift that ultimately determines whether a child will receive a Waldorf education or not. In order to extend this possibility to as many of Maui’s children as possible, HWS distributes far more in tuition assistance than it receives through specific gifts.

In 2005-2006, $277,154 was given to 49% of its students through

scholarships, tuition remission, and sibling discounts.

11

Making a diff erence in the life of an HWS child

Christine Wasserman, a school social worker, and her husband Gordy, a third grade teacher, shared a passion for helping Latino migrant farm children. It drove them to study Spanish on their own and ultimately to begin the adoption process of a beautiful Guatemalan child. Alejandro (Alex) was referred to Christine and Gordy when he was just 3 days old. Unfortunately, Gordy’s brain cancer that had been in remission for seven years returned and despite his valiant eff orts, it ultimately took his life. Christine was devastated but determined to fi nish the adoption process alone.

After re-applying for the adoption as a single parent and two trips to Guatemala, Christine fi nally received Alex when he was 22 months old. She soon discovered his intense innate attraction to music and natural rhythms, and his love of stories and the spoken word. Christine was fortunate to work in a public school that off ered Alex a solid foundation in both academics and the performing arts. Alex began dancing and singing at age 5 and playing the piano at age 8. However, upon their arrival in Maui several years ago, that all changed. They encountered heart breaking diffi culties in fi nding a school with good academics that would also nurture his “pizzazy” creative nature.

After struggles that left now 11 year old Alex fall-ing two years behind in math, overwhelmed with homework, distressed by the behavioral problems of other children, highly anxious about school, and suff ering from nightmares, Christine fi nally found HWS. Our strong academic program taught through the arts was perfect for Alex. Even Spanish, his native tongue, was part of the HWS curriculum.

However, Christine could not aff ord the school alone as a single Mom on Maui. But because of the tuition assistance HWS was able to off er, Alex was enrolled. Both parent and child felt embraced by the warmth of this caring school community. In addition to fi nding just the right education, they also found a loving ‘ohana.

Extremely grateful for the support,

Christine wrote us a letter:

Thank you for helping my child regain what is most

important in life…his childhood. Thank you for

eliminating the stress and pressure of a rigid acceler-

ated academic program that is counter-productive

and destructive to a child’s physical, emotional, and

intellectual development. Thank you for facilitating

the growth of my son’s whole being, and especially for

providing so many wonderful opportunities for him

to grow in the Arts, his true passion. Thank you for

his teacher’s warmth, kindness, and atmosphere of

classroom acceptance, and her masterful teaching.

My son loves HWS. He calls it his “dream school.”

5th grader Alex Wasserman himself says,

“Waldorf helps you fi nd all the talents hiding inside you and helps you be the best that you can be.”

Tuition assistance continues to be one of the strongest vehicles for making a direct impact

on the life of a child. Join us in making a diff erence.

12

The Annual Giving CampaignThe Annual Giving Campaign is HWS’s primary source of contributed funds that make our mission possible. Through this campaign, Board members, Parents, Faculty & Staff, Grandparents, Alumni, and Friends come together to show their support for our school.

In 2005/2006 we exceeded our goal

of $100,000. Mahalo nui loa to our

dedicated HWS ‘ohana!

A message from HWS Business Manager, Dale Webster.

Financials in 2005-2006 refl ect substantial increases in donations and grants. With these funds we were able to accommodate a signifi cant expansion of our Tuition Assistance Program and raise faculty salaries according to our Strategic Plan. Bus service was improved with drivers hired by HWS; however, expenses increased dramatically, owing in great part to gas prices.

Several physical improvements to the campus were carried out. With income generated from operations we were able to complete the renovation of our

new administrative building and also redesign the old administrative building for more class room space. We had to borrow $150,000 to build a septic system which was required by law.

Ultimately, our school has a sound fi nancial base which will continue to solidify as we focus on building our cash reserves in the future.

A message from the President of the Board, Bob Chapman

At a recent end-of-year meeting faculty, staff , board members, and parents came together to review the year and look toward the future. “Community” was the predominant word that described their experience at HWS. Over the 2005-2006 school year people

from all paths joined together to build idyllic rock-walled garden beds, to support children in their plays, and to fi nalize the HWS Strategic School Improvement Plan. We off ered the community unique events such as the Night of Delight, Holiday Faire, Candlelighting Ceremonies, Family Games Night, and Lei Day.

Through each of our communal gatherings, individuals shared their aloha for the school, providing the necessary sustenance for its continued growth. Just as a keiki sprouts from a kalo plant that is well tended, our school continues to add students, resourc-es, and programs through all of the good intentions shared by the community. Stories shared at our meeting described the conditions necessary to create such an environment: over and over people mentioned the support, empowerment, trust, grati-tude, and common purpose they felt at our school. It is clear that HWS is a place of ‘ohana.

As a parent and board member since the late 80’s, I have watched HWS move forward on a continuous path of self-improvement. I have witnessed fi rst-hand the diff erence a committed community has made in actualizing the Waldorf educational vision, and thus the dreams of our children. It never fails to amaze me just how powerful a small group can be in making the world a better place.

Mahalo for being a part of that group.

Aloha,

Bob Chapman HWS Board President
