PARTNERS IN EDUCATION

Sponsored by AAMCO Transmissions and Total Car Care

Boston Elementary School forged a relationship with Cobb EMC in August 2004. As one of Boston ES’s most dedicated and valued Partners In Education, Cobb EMC looks for a variety of avenues in which to make a difference in school.

Even before school begins, Cobb EMC is at pre-planning with teachers, provid-ing complimentary breakfast and lunch, along with door prizes for the teachers. In addition, each year Cobb EMC offers grant money for Boston ES’s educators. A grant for the school’s science lab was recently awarded to Kathy Cash. Pictured above from left to right: Boston Elementary Principal Joey Moss, Cobb EMC As-sociate Vice President of Education &Community Relations Mark Justice, Kathy Cash, and Assistant Principal Yolanda Torres. Of course, Boston ES’s students are the main focus for Cobb EMC and they gener-ously provide a range of items and activities for them to use and enjoy, including daily agendas,“Say No to Bullying” t-shirts, decks of playing cards, Silly Bandz, and two author visits (Gail Karwoski and Brian Lee). Finally, Cobb EMC has even opened its doors to our most deserving fourth grade students. These students must complete an application and “apply” for positions at their company. The most compelling applications earn a chance to visit Cobb EMC and learn all about life in corporate America.

Truly, Cobb EMC stands head and shoulders above many Partners In Education in its quest to better the lives of the community surrounding Boston ES. Ms. Moss, commends Cobb EMC, exclaiming, “We are so grateful for Cobb EMC’s contin-ued support of the Boston Bears!”

The deco-rations were hand-made from natural and organic pieces provided by Ms. Van Brink who is a Master Gardener. The club meets twice each month and is led by Ms. Van Brink along with teacher sponsor, Lisa Wright.

As a new Partner In Education, Pilgrim’s Pride has embraced Canton Elementary School in many ways. At the beginning of the school year they provided grade level backpacks filled with all the supplies needed. During the holidays, they adopted 20 of Canton ES students with their “Giving Tree” program and provided clothes, shoes, and toys for each child for Christmas. THANK YOU, Pilgrim’s Pride!!! You have made the days brighter for many of our students!!!

When it comes to Partners In Education, Teasley Mid-dle School believes that one of thier partners, Oak Leaf Church, sets the example. Teasley MS is privileged to rec-ognize them for their continued support for of the stu-dents, staff and community. One admirable attribute that Oak Leaf has exhibited throughout the PIE relationship is that, without fail, they respond to the diverse needs of the community in a very personal way. This organization is always ready to face any challenge presented them. While they may receive accolades or attention as a result of Teasley MS’s gratitude; it is evident that from their per-spective, no “thank you” is required. Their attitude seems to be, that a need was met, and now on to the next. In-stead of doing it for the praise and recognition, they do it because of who they are and the mission they have set forth for themselves. Whether it is providing breakfast for a hungry staff, com-fort for grieving students, school supplies, or simple words of encouragement, Oak Leaf is the first to step forward. A more recent example of their generosity was on November 8, 2012. Teasley MS opened the basketball season against county rival, Freedom Middle School, at the 2nd Annual Black and Blue Tournament, also known as The Battle of the Boards. The four games were held at Cherokee High School, which was significant as both Teasley MS and Freedom MS students feed into Cherokee HS. Oak Leaf Church assisted in creating and purchasing all of the t-shirts for the event. This act of service and kindness is one of many the relationship with this very special Partner In Education over the last few years. Oak Leaf Church is consistently available to meet the many changing needs of Teasley MS students, and for that, Tea-sley MS is honored to recognize Oak Leaf Church as an exceptional Partner In Education.

A new partner, the Rotary Club of Canton, has been a valuable partner for Canton ES. The partnership was madeofficial with an on-site Rotary meeting held on Oc-tober 30th where members received a tour of the school after their lunch meeting which was held in the Media Center. A gracious monetary donation was given during the meeting to help with needs of Canton ES’s students. One member of the Rotary Club of Canton, John Longi-no, is a weekly speaker for 4th and 5th grade classes. He speaks on very educational and entertaining topics. On Read for the Record Day, members Peter Gleichman and Barbara Jacoby read to the students. Canton ES is so for-tunate to have the support of this partnership. THANK YOU, Rotary Club of Canton!!! We are honored to have you on board with us at Canton Elementary STEM Acad-emy!!! Pictured above is Barbara Jacoby reading to Mrs. Watson’s kindergarten class and Canton ES Principal Gwen Lince as book character “Ladybug Girl”.

There are dozens of partnership success stories each making an impact on the schools in Cherokee County. Volunteer oppor-tunities are whatever people want them to be, as just one hour can make a difference in the life of a child. As business leaders you need to develop the human capital that exists right here in the community. Your future leaders and employees are eager to know you, learn from you and be inspired by you! Parternering is not just about filing papers in the front office. Partnering is about mentoring students, volunteering for special functions, provid-ing internships and/or job shadowing opportunities, sponsor-ing school clubs, helping with incentive awards for achievement and/or attendance, serving as a judge for a school event, partici-pating in career fairs, providing tours of local businesses for stu-dents, sharing resources, reading to a class, and many more!

As you can see, there are many ways for you to make a difference in the lives of Cherokee County students. Become a Partner in Education today!

The DOJO American Karate Center Teaches

Bascomb ElementarySchool Students About Good Choices

Bascomb Elementary School Partner in Education, Adam Parman of Championship Martial Arts (formerly known as the American DoJo), recently provided important classroom lessons for students at Bascomb ES. He has provided multiple topics in different grade-levels such as using thought interrupters to help students manage their anger, goal setting for school success, and respect for others. Throughout these lessons, Adam reinforces the behaviors of good students through his zero-remind-er and one-reminder rules. One student from each class is chosen at the end of each lesson for demonstrating model student behavior and gets to break a real karate board. All students are given a homework worksheet to reinforce the skills they learned that day and if parents recognize students using these skills, they are invited to attend a free ceremony at Championship Martial Arts to earn their white belt and break a board. Pictured here is Mr. Parman as “PE Coach For theDay” where he spent the entire day teaching PE classes about good choices in health and physical fitness. Since becoming a Bascomb ES Partner In Education, The DOJO American Karate Cen-ter has also provided support to Bascomb ES through a staff appreciation breakfast and participating in PTA ini-tiatives.

Chick-fil-A Canton Riverstone Parkway is one of Canton ES’s veteran partners remains united in making Canton ES the best it can be. This school year, Spirit Nights have been moved on site for the Canton Connect meetings as well as the 2012-2013 Curriculum Night. For each meeting, parents and students can pre-order through Canton ES PTA to have their meals on-site before the meetings. It is a great time of fun and fellowship as the faculty and staff join the families for Spirit Nights in the school cafeteria. On Friday, November 9th, Chick-fil-A and the 3rd Grade from Canton ES had a pep rally to kick off the Wipe Out Germs program. This pilot program through Chick-fil-A is a 6-week course that teaches the 3rd grade students through educational activities about the importance of wiping out germs. In the kit that each teacher was provided, they received a case of Purell in-dividual hand sanitizers along with a caddy for usage on field trips and on the playground. At the end of the pro-gram, Chick-fil-A will host a “Graduation Celebration” for the Canton ES 3rd graders. Thank you, Chick-fil-A Can-ton Riverstone Parkway!!! At Canton ES, we, “Eat more Chiken!!!”

Darlene Cope of Northside Hospital - Cherokee has been instrumental in helping my students, who have more learning challenges than most students, on their quest to succeed. They all have had difficulty on the state tests and have low self-esteem when it comes to anything with math. Darlene has physically come to the school and helped students in the computer lab. With 30 students an extra hand is always beneficial. She has donated various prizes as students strive to reach goals, and we have even talked about arrang-ing hospital tours for my older students to show them possible career paths.

I work with 150 students who all could use a helping hand, with a smile and a willingness to see the ability that most of these students do not see in themselves Darlene has stepped forth to assist. For that I am ex-tremely grateful.

Northside Hospital-Cherokee has graciously made a mon-etary donation to purchase a AED device for Canton Ele-mentary STEM Academy (CES). The school is very apprecia-tive of the addition of this life-saving device to the campus and anxiously awaits its arrival and installation. A member of the Rotary Club of Canton and Community Relations Coordinator for Northside Hospital-Cherokee, Alison Hig-gins, facilitated a coat drive for our students. The school received 60 coats to help meet the needs of the CES stu-dents. THANK YOU, Northside Hospital-Cherokee! What a life-saving partner to help keep our incredible students warm and safe.
