Participants
We welcome individuals from diverse com-
munities throughout NZ who
believe in the value of inclusion, partner-
ship approaches, and full citizenship for all
disabled persons
consider the role of disabled persons and
family/ whanau critical in decision making
are able to respect diverse views
are committed to full participation on the
course i.e, attend all sessions
have had previous involvement with
advocacy, sector or community
development, or similar
are self sufficent with travel and self
care (note: individuals who require
significant support with mobility and/ or
self care are welcome to apply if they
are suported at no cost to SAMS)
PARTNERS is a course which has
been designed with the input from
people with disabilities and family/
whanau who are interested in being a
catalyst for change in the sector. The
course is designed to provide partici-
pants with current independent
information and further develop skills.
Networking and contact
with a wide range of peo-
ple with expertise is a pri-
mary objective. The
course will provide an op-
portunity for participants to contribute
to sector change.
Ten participants will be selected.
Course instruction includes 4 weekends
(Fri/ Sat).
Course fees, accommodation and travel
costs are covered.
Course sessions wil l
include
information on:
* History of services, including perceptions,
myths, and challenges faced by people with dis-
abilities
* Guiding principles for inclu-
sion and introduction to toolsfor influencing change
* Personalised services and ideas about how to
visualise a better life (and supports/services)
* Understanding of advocacy and creating
change
* Working creatively with conflict
* Making the best use of media
