A Mhic Léinn Ionchasaigh,

Míle buíochas as páirt a ghlacadh i gclár páirtaimseartha anseo in Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Dhún Dealgan (ITDD). Is féidir liom a dheimhniú go bhfuil na cláir sa Réamheolaire seo, atá dírithe ar ghníomhaíochtaí in earnálacha éagsúla eacnamaíocha, sóisialta agus cultúrtha in Éirinn, deartha go cúramach d’fhonn scileanna breise a bhfuil éileamh orthu faoi láthair a thabhairt duit.

Ba mhaith linn go mbeadh rath ortsa agus cuirimid tusa i lár timpeallachta foghlama atá fuinniúil agus solúbtha, ina bhfuil raon tacaíochtaí ar fáil lena n-áirítear foireann mhúinteoireachta sároilte, Leabharlann den chéad scoth agus raon acmhainní clóite agus digiteacha agus rochtain ar áiseanna eile ar an gcampas.

Nuair atá do chinneadh á dhéanamh agat, ba mhaith linn go bhféachfá ar theistiméireachtaí agus ar mholtaí iarchéimithe ár gclár páirtaimseartha, atá ar fáil sa Réamheolaire seo. Ina gcás siúd, mheas siad gurbh fhiú go mór an iarracht agus tá súil agam go dtagann tusa ar chlár chomh maith a fhreastalaíonn ar do riachtanais féin agus go mbeadh rath ort ann.

Mura dtagann tú ar chlár a fhreastalaíonn ar do riachtanais féin, téigh i dteagmháil linn le do thoil agus inis dúinn faoi na riachtanais chéanna. Cuirimid romhainn i gcónaí aon aiseolas a chur san áireamh. Le meas,

Michael Mulvey Ph.DUACHTARÁN, ITDD

Balance your studies with your life

Lifelong learning can make such a difference to your life, whether you want to expand your mind and learn just for fun, or you are looking to improve your professional prospects or change career direction.

Taking on the commitment of a full-time degree programme, however, might not be feasible in your particular circumstances. Perhaps you are working full-time but want to get ahead in your career through continuous professional development.

Or you might have been out of education for a while and feel uncertain about returning to study on a full-time basis. Whatever your position, DkIT can offer a range of part-time studies that fit more easily into your lifestyle.

Our Lifelong Learning Team is here to help

The Lifelong Learning Centre at DkIT co-ordinates over seventy flexible part-time professional development and lifelong learning programmes. Our mission is to provide adult learners with flexible and skills-focused learning routes, enabling the learner to achieve a third level qualification in line with work, family and other life commitments. Our part-time courses are particularly suitable for those who wish to study new topics and course areas, update their professional skills or add to their qualifications. Accredited courses are offered in the areas of Business & Accountancy, Teaching & Learning, Humanities, Engineering, Computing & Creative Arts and Health & Science. Non-accredited courses and customised programmes for industry are also available.

The Lifelong Learning Centre is located adjacent to the main DkIT Reception. It provides information and support services to a growing number of part-time students. Courses are available at the main DkIT campus however, other centres throughout the region may host part-time programmes provided sufficient numbers of students from the area register on any one programme.

Ciara Leads the Way for a ‘Lean Culture’ at Servisource

Dundalk-based Ciara Clarke, Account Manager at Servisource, one of the fastest growing recruitment and staffing solutions providers in Ireland, first became interested in the area of Lean Six Sigma when taking part in a Leadership Development Programme at work.

“As a company we were looking at implementing ean principles in Servisource. Problem solving and cutting out unnecessary steps played right into my wheelhouse. Our CEO has a particular interest in lean and continuous Improvement with a view to enhancing the service delivery experience for our customers. While participating in the Servisource Leadership and Development Programme I was tasked with investigating lean as a potential business model.”

In order to gain a better insight and understanding of the topic, Ciara undertook research into courses available across the country and she was delighted to find that DkIT offered the Certificate in Lean Six Sigma (Green Belt) right on her doorstep.

“DkIT’s reputation and location made it an easy choice for me when it came to choosing the best course. And the timing was perfect. I completed the course from September to December 2018, which coincided perfectly with the Leadership Development Programme at work!”

As Ciara’s work required her to travel regularly to the far side of the country to meet with colleges and

universities, regarding recruitment of support staff for students with disabilities, she was often commuting from far afield to make it to her classes on the DkIT campus in Dundalk.

“I recall one evening when I drove from Galway to DkIT for class and then straight back toPortlaoise, so that I was at least halfway to Limerick, where I needed to be the followingmorning.”

But for Ciara is was worth it, with her highlights including the balance of theory and practice along with the exposure to the various industries that were represented in the group of students in the class.

“My lecturers were extremely approachable and very passionate about the topic. They ensured there was always a great balance of theory and practical, combined with real life examples to further explain ideas and concepts.”

“The course was hugely beneficial for me in a professional capacity, offering a change in mindset and allowing me to adapt new tools to support me in how I approached projects.”

“Since I completed the course I will be working on lean projects within the company, helping to develop a lean culture within Servisource. Exciting times ahead!”

Regina Sets Her Sights on MA in Learning & Teaching Following Completion of Part-Time Cert

Regina Moley, from Cullaville, Co. Armagh, completed the Certificate in Higher and Professional Learning at DkIT in 2018, with the aim of using this introduction back into the world of study as a route to completing the MA in Learning and Teaching at DkIT.

Taking time out of her busy work and study schedule, Regina sat down to have a chat with DkIT about how she is getting on.

“I had been looking at some of the colleges and universities throughout the country, North and South and DkIT seemed to offer what everyone else was and it was right on my doorstep.”

A conversation with Moira Maguire, Head of Learning and Teaching within the Centre for Learning and Teaching at DkIT, gave Regina the clarity and information she needed to make the first step into further study.

“I got talking to Moira and although I had initially been looking to do the Masters in Learning and Teaching (MALT), she had suggested that I first complete the Certificate in Higher and Professional Learning to bridge the gap between the two courses and give me the introduction back into study that I needed after being out of education for so long.”

“When researching the courses available and looking into those available at DkIT, the breakdown of the modules and the syllabus of the MALT course were very relevant to me, because of the work that I do.”

Following completion of the Certificate in Higher and Professional Learning and now as a student of the

Masters in Learning and Teaching, Regina is highly complimentary of the support provided to her.

“I have to say and it is the same with everyone I speak to, the support is amazing. I know I have only completed one course and have started another, but it seems to be that at any time there are mechanisms in place that allow you contact your tutors and they get straight back to you. I especially like that element of studying here, especially being a mature student.”

“I feel that I got everything out of the Certificate in Higher and Professional Learning. It really gave me the confidence to go on. Although I have been working full-time all my adult life and have completed short courses throughout that time, I haven’t actually gone back to college or university in 20 years. It is important to have the support initially and guidance so you know you’re on the right track.”

Speaking to DkIT, Regina shared her advice to future students who are thinking about studying either the Certificate in Higher and Professional Learning or the Masters in Learning and Teaching:

“For anyone that has been out of studying the Certificate would be the perfect introduction for them, because there is no pressure on you as such and you are getting that support from your tutor. Being shown how to research, reference etc., which I had totally forgotten how to do and is so important meant that it was very relevant and gave me the confidence I needed to progress to the Master’s degree.”

Raymond Generates New Skills in Renewable Energy to Support Energy Efficient Home Renovation

Renewable energy enthusiast, Raymond Manley saw the Level 6 Certificate in Renewable Energy at DkIT as the ideal opportunity to get more in-depth knowledge about the area, to help him undertake an ambitious renovation project on his 1902 Dundalk home and convert it into an energy efficient, environmentally friendly haven.

“I was planning to renovate my 1902 home and I wanted to find out what the practical options would be that I could install over the course of a year. I therefore wanted to enrol in a course that would give me the ideas for what would work.”

A retired lecturer in Electronics and Engineering, Raymond’s interest in the area stemmed from a passion to find out more about climate change, as well as find out more about renewable energy and what options were available for him to make changes in his home.

“While my background is in Engineering and Electronics, I wouldn’t have had much experience in the area of renewable energy. Climate change and the fact that we all need to get a bit more information about energy and what options we have that could be implemented in our lives and our home and car for example were the main reasons to undertake the course.”

For Raymond, DkIT seemed to be the only option that supported him in achieving his goals.

“I found that the Level 6 Certificate was not too difficult a level and it meant that over a year I could get a compact course, focusing on all the areas of renewable energy and which gave me the skills and information I needed to make

evaluations about the best options for me. I was also interested in DkIT because it was just on my doorstep and I knew that there was a Centre for Renewable Energy here, one of the only institutes in the country that I am aware of that has one.”

“All of the lecturers on the course were excellent and very knowledgeable. While I came into the college for most classes, I had the flexibility of attending the online classes also, which made it very accessible.”

“The best part of the course for me was the final project, involving a report based on my house and detailing what options I could and couldn’t use or would be most likely to use. During the renovation I was then able to implement the report conclusions. The year after renovating my house I can see a 30% reduction in the energy used.”

Now a part-time lecturer at DkIT teaching the Level 6 Certificate in Applied Electrical Engineering, Raymond made quite a few changes to his home following completion of the course.

“I installed a lot of insulation into the walls of the house to reduce energy loss as much as possible, introduced controls, timers and heating zones, allowing me to control the amount of heat and gas I used.”

“The Certificate in Renewable Energy is a very good course for anyone interested in the area and anyone wanting to take responsibility for climate change. There is a lot you can learn from it!”

Studying Part-time was Child’s Play for Siobhan

A redundancy in 2008 was the catalyst for a complete career change for Siobhan Duffy from Dundalk. As a young adult, she had volunteered with various groups that worked with children and had always loved this line of work. Having four young children of her own at the time reinforced Siobhan’s belief that her career lay in this direction.

“I always had a passion for working with children and I knew then it was now or never.”

“So I decided to follow my heart and while working in various administration jobs, I began taking online part-time courses in Early Years Education"

Her part-time studies were successful in landing her the full-time role of Early Years Practitioner in the Lios na nÓg Playgroup in 2008, a busy community crèche located within the campus of St. Joseph’s Primary School in Dundalk.

She settled in, loved the work and after a few years, decided to continue with her education but with a full-time job and a growing family to take care of, full-time study wasn’t practical. Siobhan contacted the Lifelong Learning Centre in DkIT to check out her part-time options and subsequently was among the first part-time intake for the School of Health and Science’s Bachelor of Arts Degree in Applied Early Childhood Studies in 2014.

"We attended two evenings a week and every third Saturday plus assignments and the lecturers were brilliant at supporting us.”

She completed her Level 7 two-year degree in 2016 and then progressed on to complete her BA(Hons) Degree in Applied Early Childhood Studies, a Level 8 course with DkIT.

“The entire degree course is normally four years, but because of our previous qualifications, we were exempted from first year and went straight into second year.”

In the middle of her degree course, Siobhan was promoted to Manager of the Lios na nÓg Playgroup in 2015 and credits her studies in DkIT with giving her the confidence to apply for the role. With the support of the Playgroup Board of Management, she is now in charge of 28 staff looking after 190 children daily between the ages of 2 and 12 in full-time and afterschool care for 50 weeks a year.

“Making the decision to go back to education was not an easy one, I knew that it would demand a considerable amount of time, energy and the support of my family. It all worked out and it was such a positive experience. I love what I do and following my heart has paid off in so many ways for me.”

Course Description The Certificate in Acute Medicine Nursing is a 10 credit Level 8 Special Purpose Award delivered over one semester using a blended learning delivery. The course will enable nurses who care for patients within an Acute Medicine Unit/Emergency Department to develop their knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of acutely ill adults.

Acute medicine as a speciality has developed rapidly over the last number of years both nationally and internationally. It is defined as part of general (internal) medicine concerned with the immediate and early specialist management of adult patients who present to or from within hospitals as urgencies or emergencies (RCoP 2007). Given the acuity of patients who present to Acute Medical Assessment Units (AMAU’s) it is recognised that there is a need to develop additional clinical expertise among acute medicine nurses.

In light of this a consortium of six Institutes of Technology (AIT, DkIT, GMIT, LyIT, IT Tralee, WIT) has developed a Level 8 Special Purpose Award in Acute Medicine Nursing for nurses working in AMAUs, MAUs and Emergency Departments. The aim of the course is to enable acute medicine nurses to develop their knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of acutely ill adults.

This course supports the commitment made by the Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director H.S.E. in association with the National Acute

Medicine Programme, to provide clinical education for nurses working in Acute Medicine Units.

Part-Time Learning Helps Monica During Her Transition into Management

Monica Conroy from Carlingford, Co. Louth has a relationship with DkIT which spans more than 16 years. She trained to become an Intellectual Disability Nurse in the early 2000s at St Mary’s Drumcar which back then had a link with DkIT (before the Institute opened its Department of Nursing & Midwifery). She has since gone on to complete two part-time courses at the Institute and already has her eyes set on another course in the near future.

Now living in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, Monica celebrates 16 years as a qualified nurse. In 2015 she completed the Level 8 part-time course, Certificate in Contemporary Palitative Care Practice.

“The Certificate course in Contemporary Palliative Care was very in-depth and provided expertise in this niche area. Not everyone deals well with the notion of death and so the course really did help with training around this. The course gave me the confidence to practice palitative care at home.”

“Since completing the course, I took up a management position and so I felt I wanted to cement my knowledge learned in practice through academic knowledge and have a qualification for it.”

In 2018 Monica completed the Level 8 Certificate in Leadership, Management and Quality Initiatives in Intellectual Disability Services.

“This programme was aimed at helping you develop and understand leadership skills. It included a mix theory and encouraged you to look at yourself and reflect on your own unique style of leadership.”

In her current role as clinical nurse manager, Monica manages a seven-bed community house. In discussing why others should consider DkIT for part-time learning, Monica says,

“I would advise others to take the leap of faith. You’re never too old. The support you receive from the lecturers here is second to none. They are very much aware that you’re doing these courses in your own time. It’s in addition to family and working full-time and they are very understanding about this.”

Monica did have some reservations about returning to education but soon realised that the teaching staff are prepared for this.

“They’ll support from everything to turning on the computer right through to taking you to the library and showing you how to search for academic resources. There really is nothing that they don’t support you on.”

Monica is now ‘hooked’ on learning and is looking to the future about what courses she can study next.

“The sense of achievement of getting the qualification is fantastic and the courses are short and very doable. I have it on good authority that there are more relevant part-time courses in the area of Intellectual Disability Nursing coming on stream soon, so I hope to continue expanding my knowledge.”

Mairead Updates her CV with Diploma in Food Supply Chain Operations

“From my experience, very few people want to do a bad day’s work, so having a good robust quality management system is priceless. If processes and training are in place, everyone is far happier across the board.’

Said Mairéad Hickey from Swords, who recently completed the Springboard-funded Diploma in Food Supply Chain Operations course at Dundalk Institute of Technology.

“Quality Management is not all about rules and regulations, it’s about a culture of Continuous Improvement and an attitude that is centred around doing the right thing or, to put it another way, making it difficult for someone to do the wrong thing.”

Mairéad knows a thing or two about quality management, her whole professional career to date has been centred around it. Before stepping back for several years to raise her now grown children, she was a senior test technician with Amdahl, followed by eight years as Quality Auditor and Quality Manager with two technology-based companies.

Mairéad returned to work three years ago in an administrative role with a local company but wanted to move back into quality control and needed to update her CV with a fresh qualification. She was interested in the food and pharmaceutical sectors and following some online research discovered the

Springboard course in DkIT.

“I love quality system management and I was looking for a part-time course that, combined with my current professional qualifications and experience to date, would open up opportunities to work in that area across a wide range of industries.”

The course provides the opportunity to develop supply chain management skills, which have been identified as a major skills gap in this area. Quality Management is one of the main modules. Mairead began the course in September 2016 and found it to be varied, with regular assignments and deadlines.

“We had Christmas and Summer exams and I loved the challenge and the study. I felt very envigorated and sharp by the end of it.”

Mairéad’s dream job would be a Quality Systems role in the food or pharmaceutical sectors. In the meantime, is working in warehouse administration with a national fresh food and vegetable supplier, a role that is a continuation of the student placement organised by DkIT.

“In my view, having a fresh qualification is essential, particularly when you are returning to work after a break. The DkIT course has put me on the road to where I want to go in my career.”

Brian Takes First Steps Back Into Higher Education with Part-Time Course in Programming

Hailing from Dundalk, Brian McKenna, was fascinated by computers from an early age.

“I would spend hours a day playing games and surfing the web.”

An encounter with a web development company through his full-time role was the catalyst for Brian looking into studying a part-time course in programming.

“I use computers every day at work using Photoshop to create projects such as magazine catalogues and website banners and about two years ago I had the opportunity to liaise back and forth with a web development company planning out a new website for my workplace.

I found it very interesting talking to them about the possibilities of our ideas being put on to the final website and thought to myself why don't I start learning about web development, it seems very interesting. Researching more and more about programming made me want to take the next step to attend a course that would get me started on my journey.”

Brian chose the part-time Certificate in Programming at DkIT because it offered the best solution for his needs.

“I chose to study at DKIT because they had a level 7 part-time course which would be the perfect

stepping stone for myself as a mature student to get back into 3rd level education."

"I also found it handy that the course is held in the evenings as I work full-time and it was also a bonus that I only have to travel 5 minutes to the campus in Dundalk.”

“All my lecturers, including Philip Scanlon (Web Development & Databases), Andrez Bujok (Javascript) and Andrew Shaw (Java), were excellent and a great help to my studies. They were always there to walk me through any problems I had. The amount of content that we covered means that I am now confident in creating intermediate websites and look forward to learning more to improve my skills.”

And when asked about his advice to future students, Brian commented:

“This is a perfect stepping stone if you want to get into the world of programming.”

Eager to continue his studies, Brian plans to return to DkIT to study the BSc (Hons) in Computing, setting his sights high with ambitions to have his own business or work for a leading tech company in the future.

Studying Animation Part-time Helped Christopher Move Up the Career Ladder in Boulder Media

Growing up loving video games and animation was the inspiration for pursuing a career in 3D Computer Animation for Dublin-based Christopher Boyle, graduate of the part-time Higher Diploma in 3D Digital Animation at DkIT.

“Video games, animation and watching the development of 3D graphics throughout the 90's and 00's was my main motivation for going into my prior degree (Software Engineering), and after a few years working in Software Development, my interest to pursue it increased.”

While exploring the further education choices in this area, Christopher discovered that DkIT seemed to be the only place offering a course on 3D Digital Animation, one which he could complete while working full time.

“The flexibility of the part-time course at DkIT meant that I could work during the day and log onto the online classes in the evening. I only needed to come to the campus in Dundalk 3-4 times each semester, which was a massive bonus.”

Talking to DkIT about his experience studying here, Christopher was quick to discuss his highlights.

“I would have to say the group work was the highlight for me. In my class we all came from a variety of backgrounds and age groups, which was refreshing because there were so many

unique perspectives,” said Christopher. “Plus it created a nice dynamic where we all helped and pushed each other to do our best.”

And he was quick to compliment his lecturers, who he said played a hugely supportive role.

“Our primary lecturer was Michael Connelly, who was generally involved in all our coursework. I learned a lot about not just animation and the tools from Michael, but also fantastic guidance on what direction I should take with my own skills. I also had the pleasure of being taught by John Loane (Maths & Unreal Engine), Shane D'arcy (Python Programming) and Peter Morris (Project Management & Audio Engineering), who like Michael, always went above and beyond when teaching us.”

Christopher cites the Higher Diploma in 3D Computer Animation at DkIT as playing a huge role in securing his current role as Pipeline Technical Director at Boulder Media in Dublin.

“For me, it helped me get what I consider to be a dream job. It is tough, especially if like me you are working full time. That said, while the lecturers will push you to do your best, they are also very fair and more than willing to work with you.”

Applicants should be aware that for a class to commence it is necessary for the Institute to enrol a minimum number of students. If this number is not reached the Institute reserves the right to cancel or discontinue the course.

Students will be notified and a full fee refund will be processed automatically. Refunds are made at the end of a given month so please note there can be a delay of 4–6 weeks before a refund is received from the Institute. If you pay by credit or debit card, refunds will be made within two weeks.

In the case that the Institute runs a part-time course a refund of fees may only be obtained under the following circumstances: ‣ A refund will be given if a student attends for only

the first week of a five week course. ‣ A refund will be given if a student attends for only

the first two weeks of a six to ten week course. ‣ A refund will be given if a student attends for only

the first three weeks of a course lasting more than eleven weeks.

‣ In all these cases a 20% administration charge will apply.

All refund requests must be applied for in writing to the Lifelong Learning Centre. After these time periods no refunds are available under any circumstances.

Cancelled CoursesThe Lifelong Learning Centre reserves the right to cancel courses in the event of insufficient enrolments. In these cases students will be notified and all fees will be refunded.

Course SchedulesThe Institute reserves the right to change the schedule of any programme outlined in this prospectus. The Lifelong Learning Centre or the

Please note that the number of weeks scheduled for each programme is approximate—some programmes may not require the number of weeks stated, while others may necessitate additional weeks.

In addition, certain programmes may require the scheduling of extra classes during the week or on a Saturday in order to complete the programme within the academic year. If for some reason a lecturer cannot attend, classes may be cancelled without notice. However, the Lifelong Learning Centre will endeavour to minimise such disruptions.
