Paying for your courseReduced fees and loans apply for some courses. Look for the symbols below to find out which courses you may be able to access for free and those that are eligible for a Learning Loan so you can study with no upfront costs.

■ Full Level 2/3 course. If you are aged 23 or under and studying for your first full Level 2/3 course this may be FREE.

✱ Fees waived if relevant criteria met – see page 18 for more information

▲ Advanced Learning Loan available

● HE loan available

If you do not already have Maths and English GCSE at grade A*-C you can study these for FREE.

Suitable candidates for the Heritage Skills courses on page 10 may be eligible for a bursary to cover the course costs funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Lancaster City Council through the Morecambe Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI).

There is no fee remission or funding available for other courses. You can however pay in instalments for courses over 8 weeks in length to help you spread the cost.

Advanced Learning Loans These Government loans are designed to help students aged over 19 to study courses at Level 3 or above with no costs upfront.

These are similar to HE Student Loans in that you don’t pay anything back until your salary reaches a certain level. In other words you only start paying for the course once it has helped you achieve the career goals and associated salary that you aimed for.

The word ‘loan’ may cause concerns, however, here are the facts about the Advanced Learning Loan:

• There are no credit checks and no information is taken about your household income

• The interest rate is tracked to the Retail Price Index so is a low rate of interest

• You only start to pay the loan back after you have completed your course and once you start earning £21,000 a year

• Even once you earn £21,000 you only pay back a small amount each month. For someone earning £22,000 it is around £7 per month

• If you take out an Advanced Learning loan to pay fees for an Access to Higher Education Diploma and you subsequently go on to successfully complete a HE course, you won’t have to pay back your Advanced Learning Loan, meaning you could study your Access course virtually for free.

• You can pay some or all of the course fees yourself and take out a loan out to pay the balance

• It is an investment in your long term earning potential. People with Level 3 qualifications earn 20% more than those without over the course of their career. (source www.bis.gov.uk).

We have a very experienced team who can assist you with your application and guide you through the process.

Who can apply for an Advanced Learning Loan?To qualify for a loan you need to be:

• Starting a relevant course on or after 1 August 2016

• Aged 19 or over at the start of your course

• Resident in the UK for the past 3 years

• A UK national or having “settled status” in the UK

If you are aged 19-23 and this is your first Level 3 programme then the course is already funded.

Please see page 18 for more information on fees and how to enrol for your course.
