PARLIAMENT PIECEParliament Piece in an outstanding Grade II* listed house, set in wonderful gardens on the edge of Ramsbury with views over the village and the surrounding countryside. The house dates from around 1620 with the symmetrical front façade understood to be the earliest part. The house was extended in about 1650 with rooms and a staircase added to the north and the entrance moved to face west. Further additions were made in the early 19th Century but in keeping with the early 17th century style.

The house was historically known as ‘The Rookery’ and was given its current name during the Edwardian era. It is in reference to a visit understood to have been made by Oliver Cromwell to the Earl of Pembroke at Ramsbury Manor when Cromwell is said to have held parliament in the grounds of the house.

Under the current owners’ careful tenure Parliament Piece has been the subject of an exemplary scheme of renovation and restoration. This has included full re-wiring, a new plumbing and heating system, renewal of all fireplaces, renewal or restoration of all floors and a reconfiguration of numerous rooms with the guidance of Historic England. In addition, there is now a modern Redcare security system with CCTV at the gate and around the house, panic alarms and an integrated audio system. There is a temperature controlled wine room in the cellar.

The front door open under a portico with Roman Doric columns and leads into a magnificent reception hall. A beautiful Jacobean style staircase is the focal point of the hall and dates from the 18th Century. The reception rooms include a magnificent drawing room, a library which connects to the dining room via an octagonal anteroom and a sitting room. There is a beautifully designed kitchen/breakfast room with a gas fired Aga which links to the dining room via a butler’s pantry. Beyond the kitchen is a boot room and utility room.

On the first floor are four exceptional bedrooms and four bathrooms including the master bedroom suite. The second floor provides further characterful accommodation which includes two/three bedrooms a study/sitting room and two bathrooms– it is an ideal space for teenagers.

GARDENS AND GROUNDS Parliament Piece is approached through double gates, opening between a pair of listed piers into a large gravel parking and turning area. The house sits in elegant, partly walled formal gardens, which include wide lawns, deep herbaceous borders, topiary and some beautiful specimen trees including a Holly Oak which is understood to be as old as the house. The swimming pool is found to the east of the house and has been fully renewed with a retractable solar cover and air source heating. There is an adjacent pavilion with a kitchen, showers and dining area.

The tennis court, which has been recently resurfaced is found in the upper garden, behind the garden wall. A kitchen garden with fruit cages, cutting beds and an orchard is found beyond.
