The Parish Pump was started in 1979 to provide a free community magazine in the parish. It began as, and still is, a joint venture,

    combining the church magazine and village magazine. The Parish Pump is sponsored by the Parochial Church Council and Debden Parish Council. Both bodies contribute financially to the cost of running the magazine by means of a donation, received annually. It is intended that the magazine reflects all aspects of village life within the parish and provides an opportunity for community matters to be raised. In addition to the information recorded in the magazine, our sister publication, the Debden Directory provides a host of useful contact numbers for services ranging from bus times, local plumbers, doctors and restaurants. If you do not have a copy, please contact a member of the committee. The magazine has editors but no official reporters. Consequently, an interesting magazine depends on articles, news, etc. coming from people in the village. The closing date for submitting material is: the 12th of each month. The editors job is to edit. This means fitting the material into the space available and trying to ensure there is a reasonable balance of views on controversial subjects etc. Consequently, it is not always possible to publish everything submitted and sometimes changes have to be made to the length of a contribution. Non topical articles cannot always be published in the next issue but will appear later unless you are told otherwise. Contributions of up to 400 words have a better chance of being published in full than longer ones. Please note that the present and past editions of the Parish Pump are now available on line on the new website www.debden.org and that any material submitted will be automatically featured on the website. If you wish to have your name and/or contact details (which must normally accompany any contributions) withheld from the printed edition and/or not to appear on the website, this must be stated at the time of submission. Copy for inclusion in the next edition should be emailed by the 12th of the month to;

[email protected]. There is also a folder in the shop for submission of written or typed copy. The current editors of the Parish Pump, who have the sole prerogative of the editorial policy (so dont blame anyone else) are; Mike Fairchild [email protected] Ursula Lyons [email protected]

Advertising rates per issue are; full page 10.00; half page 8.00; quarter page or less 6.00. Full payment in advance and an electronic copy of the ad should be sent to the Editors or Treasurer by email. Cheques should be made payable to The Parish Pump

The other Committee members include Chairman: Judith Forster [email protected] Treasurer: Alastair Donald [email protected] Secretary: Marion Bamfield [email protected] Distribution: Caroline Burchall [email protected]

    ABOUT THE PUMP

EDITORIAL We spent February on the other side of the world enjoying a few days in Singapore, Sydney and then three weeks in New Zealanda land of such contrasting scenery that it takes your breath away. It was partly a pilgrimage back to the land of my birth to discover places where my parents had lived. So I found their house in Auckland near the first permanent university Arts Building erected 1926. Once located, I could see it from the viewing platform of the 328 metre high Sky Tower completed in 1997. What ever would my parents have thought of that? In Napier I found the wooden church where they had married; the building slightly altered with a new entrance and situated in the middle of a retirement village! In Havelock North I visited the school my mother taught at when she first arrived in NZ and, in their archive section, were pictures of the staff and pupils in the 1930s. In Wellington I discovered the houses that my fathers parents had lived inaltered over the years but still recognisable. In Wellington, there is very little flat land and the houses cling to the slopes but have the benefit of magnificent views over the harbour. My final pilgrimage was to Dunedin where my great aunt was instrumental in setting up nursery education; she founded a school in 1919 which still bears her name and still has the foundation stone which she lay. She lived in Dunedin for 60 years; her house is still there although now made into flats for student accommodation. Dunedin has a public art gallery dedicated to locals who made a difference to the city; her portrait is there. Before I had gone to NZ I knew a lot about my family but there were still many discoveries to make so we spent time in the archives of public libraries finding information. Keeping records is so important especially as cities, towns, buildings alter so much. The Parish Pump is an invaluable record of people and events; news and photographs portraying the constant movement of people in and out of the village, news about societies, the school and the churches. These pieces of news become records that future generations will delve into - whether it is searching for relatives and where they lived or looking at how places change. It is important to keep the Parish Pump as a objective record of people and happenings. I have been joint editor for three years and, as is the custom, it is time for a new editor to take my place. Unfortunately no-one has offered and it would be sad if the Parish Pump could only be published every other month. So please someone come and offer to be a joint editor and lets keep the records going. Ursula

    NEWS

NEW VILLAGE HALL: DEBDEN RESIDENTS SAY WHAT THEY WANT.

On Thursday 30th January the New Village Hall Group held a meeting to discuss how to finance a New Village Hall and approximately 86 people attended. A vote was called by a show of hands as to whether the Parish Council Precept, collected as part of the Council Tax each household pays annually, should be increased to repay a loan of 200,000 or 400,000 taken out by the Parish Council to fund the project. 43 voted for an immediate increase in 2014/2015, 13 for an increase in 2015/2016 and the rest abstained. As a result, the NVHG resolved to ask the Parish Council to vote, at their meeting on 13th February, to more than double the current Precept immediately, without full consultation of all the residents. I was concerned at the speed of this decision and that the NVHG were prepared to implement their plans that would affect everyone in Debden and Debden Green for a very long time without wider consultation. Talking to others, many shared my concerns and suggested that a door to door survey asking a number of basic ques-tions on the New Village Hall plans and how to fund it was necessary. I approached Roger Forster as a Parish Councillor and member of NVHG and shared my reservations and those of others with him, suggesting that the Parish Council should ask the opinion of every household in the village on the subject of the proposed increase in the Precept. He confirmed that there was not enough time for a formal referendum, which would be conducted by Uttlesford District Council and would involve some cost. I offered to organise an informal survey of each household assisted by volunteers. After consultation, we decided that the replies should be addressed to the Parish Clerk, who will eventually store them in strict confidence. During that week, through rain and floods, a small group of volunteers distributed 325 questionnaires around the village. They were Roger Forster, Elma McLean, Jill Johns, Karen Roper, Michael and Rosina Down, John Parkin and myself. Questionnaires were numbered to avoid duplication, one per each household that is responsible for paying the Precept. Within 7 days 149 replies were collected or put in the box in the Village Shop. The opening of the envelopes took place in the Church New Building and was overseen by an

independent observer who is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, not resident in Debden with no vested interest. Another member of the NVHG attended as an observer. Responses were re- corded by myself, Roger Forster and Roger Manser who collated and analysed the 2009 New Village Hall questionnaire. Henry Blackie also acted as an observer and double checked figures prior to signing off. The summary findings of the questionnaires were presented to the Parish Clerk in time for the Extraordinary Meeting of the Council on 13th February when the subject of the increase of the Precept would be discussed. In the event, this item could not be voted on as the Chairman closed the meeting following an inappropriate comment by one of the Councillors to members of the public. (Tables showing what the increases would have been for each Band are printed on page 7 for your information). However, the exercise of finding out what each household thinks of the proposed plans put forward for the New Village Hall and of how to fund it has been most informative and the results from the 149 responses are shown on the next page. Whilst a very large number of respondents would like a new or improved Village Hall, the responses received clearly show that the majority do not want to fund the existing plans via a loan secured by the Precept. Many are concerned by the lack of alter-native fundraising efforts by the NVHG, some by the running costs, as yet unknown, of the proposed new building which is also considered to be too large and too high. Other major areas of concern are the lack of a proper business plan, insufficient Car Parking, too many allowances made for the Playschool requirements and the location of the New Village Hall. The NVHG will be holding two open days to ask residents for suggestions on the preliminary plans that have been approved by UDC. (see page 10) Please attend the meetings if you can and make your opinion count. If you are unable to attend and would still like to send in your questionnaire please post it in the box in the Village Shop. In undertaking this survey we have had a small amount of criticism, but this has been far outweighed by the thanks we have received for ensuring that every household in the village has the best opportunity to express an opinion on the proposed plans. DISTRICT COUNCILLOR

    Cycle paths are go...?

UDC is considering a feasibility study for cycle paths in the District. One of the leading campaigns for a cycle route has been the Audley End route. However for many years I have been fighting to get a cycle path from Carver Barracks to Saffron Walden. I have received a lot of warm words but the answer has always been the finance is not available. With the Government and Health Authorities pushing for a healthier and eco friendly attitude towards transport, coupled no doubt with our excellent success in the Tour de France and Olym-pics, Cycle paths are now being seriously considered in the District. I received a request from Thaxted Parish Council, whose Youth Forum has been carrying out their own feasibility study for a cycle path from Thaxted to Carver Barracks, for help to promote this. I have, therefore, spoken to the COs at Carver Barracks, the Parish Councils of Thaxted, Debden and Wimbish, County Councillor Simon Walsh, and District Councillors Martin Foley of Thaxted, David Watson and Doug Perry of Saffron Walden and Town Councillor Mike Hibbs. All have been totally supportive and Cllr Simon Walsh has offered to take up the baton and help with this project. We hope to put forward a proposal for consideration at the Highways Panel in April. Local support from residents would be extremely helpful and I hope to organise a petition - hopefully, local shops and businesses would help by having petitions for people to sign. Any help with this would be very much appreciated. Who knows, maybe people power will bring about this much needed venture, with no pavements and a large flow of traffic, cycle paths would also double up as safer places for people to walk (and before people question the safety of this, we are not expecting them to be used as race tracks and bikes do have bells!!) Which brings me nicely on to race tracks!!! Good news week. Carver Barracks are in the embryonic stages of building an 8-lane athletics track for use by the whole community in the airfield. This will consist of a Floodlit all-weather track with 3 G football, hockey and long jump pitch in the centre. There will also be grass pitches for football and a full size Rugby Pitch. This will be phase 1. Over the time additional facilities will be added including spectator stands. Initial consultations have already taken place about the site which turns out to be ideal for this exciting project. Fund raising will be a major objective and once funds are available the whole complex can be completed within 20 weeks! What a fantastic facility for the residents of Uttlesford. All we need now is an Olympic swimming pool in the town for, I dont know about anyone else, I find it practically impossible to find a session for general use as the pool is always booked up by schools and groups.

New Village Hall gets planning approval Open days to discuss the design

Plans for Debdens new village hall have been approved by Uttlesford District Council. The only change required by the planners was the addition of a veranda to improve the appearance of the rear elevation overlooking the recreation ground. Following an undertaking by the NVHG at the public meeting on the village hall on January 30, two open days are to be held to give residents an opportunity to study the latest plans and talk to the architects and members of the organising group. The dates of the open days, to be held in June, will be published in the May Pump. They will be held on successive days to give everyone a chance to attend. Next steps are the preparation of detailed design and the issuing of a competitive tender to construction companies, which will enable costs to be finalised in time for the open days.

In the meantime, the plans can be viewed on Uttlesford Councils website at: Proposed demolition of existing village hall and shop and erection of new village hall and shop - Debden Village Hall Debden Saffron Walden Essex CB11 3LB Gaining planning permission is a significant step forward, said Stewart Luck, chairman of the NVHG. The open days will give everyone a chance to understand the thinking behind the chosen design and address the concerns that some residents have expressed, especially about the size of the build-ing. While recognising that we will never be able to please everyone, the point we need to get across is that the design is based on what user groups and residents have said they want during a year-long consultation process. The new village hall needs to offer facilities that cannot be provided by the existing building because of its size, and it must anticipate the needs of future generations. The real challenge now is to press on with fundraising through both external grant-providers and within the community and groups who use the hall.

NEWS FROM THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST MARY

Dear Friends, With its carpet of white snowdrops, which soon gives way to a carpet of bright yellow daffodils, Debden Churchyard looks stunningly beautiful in the early Spring; an exquisite garden. It never ceases to amaze me that these tiny bulbs contain everything needed to emerge into sparkling new life after months lying dormant in the ground. Spring flowers are indeed a wonderful symbol for Easter resurrection, particularly this year in the aftermath of unprecedented flooding, rain and storms. It was in a garden on the first Easter morning, that Jesus disciples, grief-stricken following the cruel death on a cross of their much loved friend, discovered to their amazement that he was restored to life new life in all its fullness; new and eternal life. That same new eternal life is promised to everyone who believes in Jesus; a promise that can give us all so much hope, especially those grieving the loss of a loved one. From Palm Sunday to Good Friday (Holy Week) we follow Jesus as he enters Jerusalem to great cheers from the crowds, through to the Last Supper, his betrayal, his trial, his crucifixion and burial in a tomb. Then on Easter Sunday we joyfully celebrate his resurrection to amazing new life. Come and join us! Please pray for all those couples who are getting married in the next few months and will be starting a new life together.

Wishing you peace and joy this Easter, With my love, Hilary

    FROM THE SCHOOL

    Dear Pump Reader,

We are so fortunate to be enjoying the beautiful weather at the moment, such a contrast to the weather at the last time of writing. The whole school has been excited about using a range of new lunchtime play equipment which was chosen by last years school council and has just arrived in school. School council members demonstrated each new piece of equipment in our celebration assembly and reminded everyone how to look after the equipment. Below are pictures taken of some of the children using the equipment.

Our Hockey A and B teams have been very busy this season playing their league games and on February 26th took part in the Inter Schools Hockey Tournament with the following results: Hockey Team A Hockey Team B Debden 1 Henham & Ugley 1 Debden 1 Henham & Ugley 0 Debden 1 Rickling 0 Debden 0 Takeley 1 Debden 3 St Thomas Moore 0 Debden 1 Chrishall 1 Debden 3 Howe Green 0 Debden 2 Dame Bs 0 Winners of Pool A Debden 0 Friends 1 Debden 0 (PF-0) RAB 0 (PF-1) Debden 2 Rickling 1 The A Team narrowly missed out on playing in the final. Debden won their pool, then played RAB, 0-0 at the end, so it then went to penalty flicks; Debden got 0, RAB got 1! So Debden missed out on playing in the final. We then went to 3rd/4th play offs and won that game, so came 3rd out of 9 schools. Our best achievement ever for the A team. Well done everyone, an excellent result! Debden Hockey B team finished joint 4th. Well done a brilliant result! A huge thank you to Mrs Magness and Mrs Cox who have coached the teams all season. We look forward to hearing the final results from the league matches at the end of the season. More news from the children and school in the next issue. NEW DEBDENITES

Farewell to Debden So after almost forty years in the village, it's time for Elma and I to say goodbye to Debden. Of course, we've seen many changes in that time, many of them for the better. We now have a thriving village shop, where Elma still works. She was the first chairman of the Village Shop Group and recalls going round the village asking people to contribute 10 to buy stocks for the potential shop (first housed in a Portakabin). Alan and Ken Lockwood were the first editors of the Parish Pump, which has also gone from strength to strength. Another first-class village institution is the school. When we arrived in 1974, it was threatened with closure because of falling numbers. Children from Carver Barracks changed all that and now it consistently receives glowing reports from Ofsted. In the last few years there has been a welcome influx of young families who bring vigorous new life to the village. Sadly, some of our friends from our first days in Debden are no longer with us: the toll has been particularly heavy in the last few months.

It's been wonderful to be part of this great village for so long. We're leaving but the McLean family link lives on: our daughter, Kirsty (a former pupil of Debden School ), her husband, Matthew, and their three children will be taking over Raymonds Cottage.

With best wishes and good luck for the future to all in Debden,

    Alan and Elma McLean

Welcome to Kirsty and Matthew Hoare and their children, Ellen, Callum and Lizzie who have moved into Raymonds Cottage.

Welcome to Harriet Holder and family who have moved into Hortons.

As I mentioned last month, two of our long serving assistants have now left. Lynn Smith has been a member of the Shop Team for some years, and started helping when she lived in the middle of the village. Elma McLean has been involved, both behind the counter and on the Committee, and was part of the group that was instrumental in raising the money to build the Shop in the first place. We sincerely thank them both for their loyal service and wish them well for the future. We welcome Judy Hervey-Murray to the Team and thank the rest of the Staff for being very flexible, enabling us to cover all the shifts. With Spring now in the air, the Shop is thinking about Easter. We have a large stock of Easter Eggs and plenty of chocolates. We are also holding an Easter Raffle, with tickets priced at 1.00 a strip. The draw will take place on Easter Saturday 20th April in the Shop. We also have a new supplier of cup cakes, and larger chocolate cakes which can be made to order. Judging by the tasting morning we held early in March, they won't stay on the shelves for long! We are holding a fund-raising Soup and Sandwich lunch again on Thursday 24th April from 12.30 to 2.30 in the Memorial Hall. Tickets will cost 5.00 per person and there will be a variety of stalls to browse. Do come and enjoy an informal get-together.

BOB TAYLOR also known as Newton

13 March 1923 3 March 2014 Dad was born and grew up in Easingwold, Yorkshire with his brother Geoff. He was educated at Easingwold Grammar and left to join Rowntree of York shortly before the outbreak of war in 1939. Despite his many future travels, he had a deep fondness for his birthplace and was always proud to call himself a Yorkshireman.

After first serving in the Easingwold Home Guard, Dad joined the Fleet Air Arm in 1941 as a Telegraphist Air Gunner, flying first in Fairey Swordfish bi-planes and then in Grumman Avenger torpedo bombers. It was on joining the Fleet Air Arm that his colleagues gave him the nickname 'Bob' due to his striking resemblance to dash-ing screen idol of the day, Robert Taylor.

Dad joined the British Pacific Fleet in 1944 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal For bravery, skill and devotion to duty whilst serving on HMS Victorious in attacks on Palembang, Sumatra. After the war, Dad returned to Rowntree and in 1948 was moved to a position based in Southport, Lancashire. He first met mum whilst playing cricket for Ainsdale sports club when mum was Ladies Tennis Captain. They married in June 1955 and over the years travelled extensively with Dads various roles at BP, living in Australia, Nigeria and South Africa. Dad had the honour of becoming the first test cricketer in the family playing for Nigeria against Ghana in the 1950s. In 1976 Dad joined Lonrho in London and we returned to our house in Debden which we had bought 5 years earlier. Mum and Dad have lived here for the last 38 years. Dad thoroughly enjoyed living in Debden and made many very good friends over the years. He became an integral part of village life, was a regular reader and sidesman in church and could often be heard ringing the bells. Dad was also proud to be a long term supporter of The British Legion and easily earned his 20 year collectors badge. Dad was a keen golfer and his second home was Saffron Walden Golf Club where both he and mum enjoyed playing with their many golfing chums for over 35 years. Dad loved to relax by taking a long walk through the fields and woods surrounding Debden and many will remember seeing him walking out with mum and their beloved dachshund, Rupert, and tipping his cap to any who came his way. Dad, we know, will be deeply missed by many. He will always be in our hearts. Jill and Andrew

MUSIC FOR A SUMMER EVENING in Debden Church Saturday 7th June at 7.30pm

The programme will include light classical pieces and well-known operatic arias as well as folk songs, Elizabethan dances and familiar pieces from musicals. We shall be entertained by professional musicians and talented local amateurs. Richard Cawte has kindly agreed to act as compere for the evening. The Military Wives Choir from Wimbish will be joining us, as well as the Semplice ladies choir from Saffron Walden and the Debden Church Choir. From the village we shall welcome Alan Mclean on the piano. Olivia Doust will be singing folk songs. The Wimbish Recorders Group will play Elizabethan dances.

Penny Manser has agreed to return to her home village to sing for us. After completing her masters in music performance at Sheffield University, she was awarded a scholarship to train with English National Opera. Whilst at the Opera School at Morley College from 2008-2010 she performed numerous solo roles. In 2012 she toured with Pop Up opera and her recent international engagements include performances with Hand Made Opera. Penny has undertaken numerous

solo oratorio performances and recital engagements. She is musical director of two choirs and has recently recorded a new composition based on the story of Hansel and Gretel. We are also pleased to welcome James Davey, who is one of the UK's most distinguished and respected young choral directors, in demand for his work as conductor, choir trainer, choral education practitioner, arranger and adjudicator. A graduate of the MA Choral Education course at Roehampton University, James is Musical Director for: Chantage, the Chandos Chamber Choir, the Aylesbury Festival Choir, the Fleet Singers and a number of work-place choirs. He is also a choir trainer for the Royal College of Music Junior Department, a Guest Conductor for the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain, and a tutor for the Cranleigh Choral Week, the Ingenium Academy and the Sherborne Summer School of Music. A flyer with ticket order form is enclosed with this copy of the Pump. Tickets are 10 in advance or 12 on the night. Advanced ticket holders will have reserved space in the centre of the Church. Doors will be open at 7pm and there will be a cash bar and light refreshments. If you have any queries (or your order form has gone missing) please contact me on 01371 830801 or by email [email protected] (Please note the w between Tony and Vernon!) News from Debden Pentecostal Church

    Dear Friends,

We were delighted to have a another visit from Maureen Lee, our previous pastor. Maureen spoke on the benefit of hindsight a phrase often quoted recently in relation to the devastating floods.

She used the example of Joseph (of multi-coloured coat fame), a youngster who was envied by his brothers to the extent they sold him as a slave. He was falsely accused by his masters wife, thrown into prison and left languishing in prison for several years. Finally he was called before Pharaoh to interpret a dream and the eventual outcome was his appointment as Prime Minister to guide Egypt through a seven year famine.

With the benefit of hindsight Joseph could have seen through his troubles, and looked ahead to his important destiny. Maureens point was that neither he, nor us, have the benefit of hindsight but instead have to trust that God has a plan for us through both good times and bad. Joseph spoke graciously to his brothers when they visited him to buy corn, "Do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. Joseph realised that all he had been through was part of Gods plan to save many lives. May we also be able to trust in God, particularly through those difficult times.

We are looking forward to another visit from Yan Hadley on the evening of 27th April. Yan has been to Debden several times now and always has something interesting to say! Please do feel most welcome to come and join with us for this, the coffee morning, or any other of our services. God bless,

GARDEN NOTES Unfortunately, these days, we have to consider the possibility that someone may enter our home uninvited. This happened to me in 2004 so I planted a few shrubs of the more vicious variety at the

suggestion of the local police. Suggested plants were Berberis, holly and roses as being good choices for under window sites; indeed anything with sharp thorns. The most suitable of all for keeping out unwanted visitors is Colletia hystrix, a type of buckthorn ultimately growing to over 2 metres in height and tolerating most sites and soils. It has masses of deep green, thick, pointed spines and small white scented flowers. Do not mess with this plant; it is certainly one to avoid until your small child and dog can identify it! My second choice would be the Japanese bitter orange, Poncirus trifoliata, an utterly unapproachable shrub which forms a mass of bright green stems, long spines, fragrant flowers and berries that are impossible to pick safely. The CIA allegedly use it to protect their buildings. Thirdly the sea buckthorn, Hippophae rhamnoides, which isnt the most attractive deciduous shrub/tree when not in leaf, but it combines large woody spikes, grey foliage and, if you grow plants of both sexes, hundreds of bright orange berries in autumn. Finally, for beautiful purple and white winter stems, Rubus thibetanus (raspberry family) has purple flowers and edible berries and runs underground making an impenetrable thicket. These are the more unusual spiky plants and you may need to consult The Plantfinder for suppliers. I'm sure you've become bored with the constant talk about saturated ground, so maybe the recent articles on the 'alternative for the lazy adventurer' will be something for you to experiment with this season. The suggestion is to cut up all the previous season's growth and let it drop where it grew. You can do this with shears or even a hedge trimmer! The dead stuff can be cut off at the base or removed in stages giving you smaller bits, at any point in the year. Autumn is favourite because the coloured mulch will look more attractive. Left until spring it will be mostly brown. The question is, would you be happy with a rather untidy look and surely making it too thick means any spring bulbs may have to fight their way through if they're small. I suggest that not many dedicated gardeners would like this approach but it's something for the larger garden. The RHS has been practising the method. I went to the Words in Walden talk recently given by Chris Beardshaw who is a very knowledgeable and entertaining speaker. He was partly promoting the sale of his book 100 Plants that almost changed the World and, at 12.99, it does appear to be a very amusing read. He suggested our gardens should be our own personal paradise planted to please ourselves rather than follow fashion. In 2012 he helped create a Chelsea garden with the disabled/underprivileged students from Furzey Gardens in Hampshire. They won a gold on a tiny budget! This garden is a good place to visit if you're not too bothered about perfection and contains many very rare plants. April Shower

    PARISH COUNCIL

Notes for Parish Pump on March Parish Council Meeting Vehicle Activated Sign at Smiths Green ECC has advised that this has been included in the 2014/15 Budget but have not confirmed when it will be installed.

Damaged Manhole in the High Street This was reported to ECC in November 2013 and the Police have now been informed.

Roles and Responsibilities of Parish Councillors A review was undertaken and details are on the back inside cover Re-classification of the road from Henham to Debden Green This road has been classified as a PR2. Investigations are taking place as to whether this is a link road or a county road; it would not be in the interests of Debden if it is a county road. Further information will be given as soon as this has been clarified. 2014 Best Kept Village and Village of the Year Competition The village will be entered again this year. Recreation Ground Car Park The Army have very kindly offered to help repair and resurface the car park and this should be attended to shortly Recreation Ground/New Village Hall The National Association of Local Councils will be contacted regarding their letter of 9th April 2001 which stated that the recreation ground is an open space and they would not advise any arrangement for a permanent building to be erected by the Village Hall Committee on land owned by the Council. Village Hall Questionnaire It was reported that some residents of the village were under the impression that the questionnaire was from the Parish Council as this was requested to be returned to the Parish Clerk. Members of the Council, who are also members of the NVHG, felt this should not have been returned to the Clerk. A Councillor, who is not involved with the NVHG, felt this was one-sided propaganda and the Parish Pump and the Walden Local have now become a political tool. After discussion, it was agreed that the Parish Clerk should not be the recipient or collator of letters from an anonymous group. Any PC questionnaire must be approved at a Council meeting.

(d) Youth Services have been reviewed (e) The Passenger Transport consultation is entering the next phase, so please reply. (f) Please continue to report pot-holes. (These can be reported and

tracked on the ECC website). It would be helpful if reports to ECC on any other matters could be copied to the Parish Clerk.

ECC has advised that the potholes will be repaired within 28 days from being sprayed with orange paint. The resurfacing team has been contacted regarding a more substantial repair during this financial year of the road from Widdington, past the Barracks to the junction with the B184, and also the road through Debden to Thaxted.

Annual Assembly, Thursday, 1st May The Annual Assembly is an opportunity for residents of the village to raise any issues with the Council. Please make a note of the date in your Diary!

Stuarts celebrity early life Chatting to Stuart as he pulled a pint at The Plough, few customers would guess how much show business played a part in his earlier life in the licensed trade. The photograph, left, shows Stuart (centre) and two friends with a young Lulu. It was taken in the Sixties in the Lyceum

nightclub and casino in Bradford, owned by Stuarts father and where Stuart, as a lad of 16, got his first taste of clubs and pubs that were to become his career. The village learnt with sadness that Stuart Hammond died, peacefully and after a long illness, at home at The Plough, aged 65. Friends and customers remembered fondly our local landlord of 12 years and paid tribute to his wife Margaret who continued to run the Plough while undertaking hospital visits and caring for Stuart at home.

Bradfords Lyceum hosted stars such as Tom Jones, and one compere was Jerry Dorsey, later better known as Engelbert Humperdinck. Margaret had a short show business career of her own when celebrity guests invited her to take minor roles in film and TV productions including the first edition of Monty Pythons Flying Circus. Stuart managed the Lyceum when his father opened a second club. After his fathers death, Stuart and Margaret bought the second club and turned it into Yorkshires first disco.

Stuart met Margaret while she was working in the Lyceum and they married in 1972. They went on to run the Star and Garter near Kimbolton where Margaret ran the restaurant using skills she learnt from an uncle, a well-known chef. After a spell at another Plough in Shropshire they indulged Stuarts love of boating and spent several happy years in Majorca aboard their motor yacht. Then to The Three Pickerels, a riverside pub near Ely.

The prospect of retirement to a thatched cottage left Stuart restless so they bought a limo-hire business before returning to their roots and buying The Plough at Debden, attracted by what Margaret recalls was a fantastic party village. After spells at their temporary home in Northampton, Margaret and Stuart returned to The Plough last year.

Another win for Debden FC Debden returned to action against Hundon Reserves after only playing once in a month full of postponements. Playing at home and with the sun behind them, Debden started solid, maintaining

the possession and controlling the tempo of the match. After the fifteen minutes mark, a strengthened Hundon side had settled into the match but it wasnt to much prevail. Good link up play from the front men, Mark Dowsett and Zak Rayner, led to a cool finish from Adam Porter to put Debden 1-0 up. The home side surged forward with Alex Turner showing great feet to carve open the Hundon defence. It wasnt long before Zak Rayner doubled Debdens lead with a 20 yard strike that was just too quick for the keeper, leaving Debden in a good position at the half. Debden again continued well in the second half controlling the manner of the match and not giving Hundon a sniff at Debdens half of the pitch, thanks to Bradley Thomas and Pete O Sullivan. Zak Rayner then found himself in front of the Hundon goal and showed fantastic composure to slot home Debdens 3rd of the game and Rayners 32nd goal of the campaign; leaving him top goal scorer in the league and having scored more goals than Hundon have all season. Hundon grabbed a goal back making it 3-1 due to some tired Debden legs. Super Sub Charlie Segar ensured the three points with composed passing and eagle eyed vision! Hell be hoping to break into this in-form Debden starting team for when Debden host championship rivals Great Paxton. Mike Pearce

    Potato Picking at The Plough

Brad Bamfield invites Charles Turner to pick your spuds in the preliminary stage of Debdens Potato Challenge held at the Plough. Charles is one of 22 competitors taking part - nearly twice the number last year. Commenting on the tradition that judges - and, based on last year, quite a few

competitors - enjoy refreshments as they visit each participants home on the day of judging, Brad told the Pump, We may have to put a limit on refreshments as 22 pints seems a lot! The top cash prize goes to the grower of the heaviest crop when assorted containers are upturned in July to reveal the 'harvest'.
