GERRY'S DEED IS DONE!

If you are in the habi t of dr iv ing up or d o w n K n o c k l y o n Road, you must surely have not iced the almost sudden app-earance of a qui te remarkable new bui lding. Its tal l , ele-gant, unusual design is qui te str ik ing. To the un in i t ia ted w h o pass that way, speculat ion was rife as t o its uses, bu t t o those who have worked so long and so hard t o achieve this goal, their impossible dream has come true. It is, of course, the magnif icent new Scout's Den.

The Cathol ic Boy Scouts of Ireland movement was est-ablished in 1927. In 1976 Knock l yon became the 112th Dubl in Uni t . Since then the Scouts have held all their meetings in Knock l yon School, thanks to the kindness and generosity )f Mr Kel ly and Mr Dal ton and in those years, the nucleus of a strong company was fo rmed. This w o u l d not have happened w i t h o u t the suppor t of its leaders and the many parents and helpers w h o encouraged the g rowth of the uni t . T o these people the c o m m u n i t y owes an enor-mous debt of grat i tude. Today the number o f Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venture Scouts is over 230. It is hoped to ex-pand this number in the autumn.

Gerry Daly came to Lansdowne 13 years ago w i t h his wi fe Helen. He became involved when his son Eoin came home one night and to ld h im that his Scout Group was breaking up because they had no Scout Leader. Gerry wen t down to o f fer his services and 5 years ago he became a Scout Leader. F rom then on life changed dramat ical ly . There was organizing, conduct ing meetings, going away reg-ularly w i t h the groups, hostel l ing, h ik ing and summer camp-ing in Scotland, Wales or Cork — even many tr ips to our own Larch Hil l . They say that behind every successful, busy man there is always a woman and indeed Helen Daly is one of them. She is very proud of her Scout ing fami l y , f ou r

sons, Eoin, Ciaran, Conor and Feargal — all scouts — and Dad w h o was appointed Un i t Leader in 1990.

When Gerry was made Un i t Leader there was £40 ,000 in the k i t t y , all raised over the years in the f o n d hope that some day the Scouts w o u l d have a home of thei r own. He resolved to raise the prof i le of the Scouts and go all ou t fo r the bui ld ing o f a Scout Den. He encouraged more people t o help. Many people were involved, the Un i t Counci l , the Finance Commi t tee and many parents. Thanks are due to Counc i l lo r Mary Mu ldoon fo r her great encouragement and w o r k . Sites were viewed and discussed and in A p r i l last year, permission was given fo r the bui ld ing of a Scout Den on the present site. Gerry said " L e t ' s go for i t ! " and they did. He appl ied to the Lo t te ry Fund and amazingly received £15,000 and another £5 ,500 was made f r o m the Christmas Fair and then there was no stopping them. A t the moment , they owe £15 ,000 to the Bank and there is sti l l the cost of pu t t ing tarmacadam around the bui ld ing and a t imber f l oo r in the Den.

There are t w o events coming up qu i te soon wh ich should help to clear o f f some of this debt. The f i rs t takes place on Saturday 11th A p r i l in St. Enda's G A A Club. It is a Super Swinging 60s Night , Band and Bar — £5.00. 60s dress is opt iona l but i t is a must fo r anyone want ing a good night 's enter ta inment and especially to see Gerry Daly in his Teddy Boy's suit. Rumour has it that he may even grow sidS locks fo r the occasion. The other date fo r y o u r d iary is Fr iday 8 th May in the Templeogue Lawn Tennis Club. This is a Race Night wh ich promises all the thr i l ls and spills of the race course together w i t h a Bar, Bookies and NO T A X . . . and of course, Sponsors w i l l make it happen!

The t w o age groups in wh ich places wi l l be available in September are: Beavers 6 - 8 years wh ich caters for Girls and Boys and Cubs 8 - 1 1 , also open to Boys and Girls. If anyone w o u l d l ike to become a Beaver or a Cub i t is necessary to col lect an App l i ca t ion Form f r o m the Scout Den wh ich must be f i l led in and returned. A n interesting tu rn of events w i t h regard to Scout ing is tha t girls are now welcome in to the packs. There are also several women Scout Leaders in Knock l yon and I am to ld they are ab-solutely marvellous.

Scout ing is one of the most wo r thwh i l e organizations in wh ich young people can take part. It promotes good cit izen-ship, obedience and self reliance. I.t encourages loya l ty and thoughtfu lness f o r others, trains young people in services useful to the publ ic and handicrafts useful t o themselves. A n d all this happens in an atmosphere of fun , games, out-door activit ies, achievement, happiness and laughter. Scouts grow up imbued w i t h a pr ide in their coun t ry and respect fo r their fe l low men. It is a lovely thought t o k n o w that the words used by the youngest Beavers on the day of their investi ture are:

"/ promise to do my best and to help the world" The of f ic ia l opening of the Den is expected to take place

in September. Eileen Casey

SCOUT INVESTITURE IN THE NEW DEN - 23rd March '92

JOHN FITZSIMONS AND JOHN B YRNE PUT THE BOYS THROUGH THEIR PACES

G/tnlti, MUf (t&fu, fuU tiu*

The Easter morn Liturgy is powerful , tingling, alive, in grand harmony with the mood of the Resurrec-tion.

Older ones among us will remember the Victimae Paschali Laudes, Praise to the Paschal Victim Bring. It is still very much part of the Easter Liturgy. Composed by one Wipo as far back as the eleventh century, it captures exquisitely the supreme joy and mystery of Christ's victory.

Let it speak for itself: "The sheep are ransomed by the Lamb and Christ the undefi led hath sinners to his Father reconciled. Life's own Champion, slain, yet lives to reign. Tell us Mary: say what thou didst see upon the way . . . I saw Christ's glory as he rose! The angels, there attesting; shroud with grave-clothes resting. Christ my hope has risen . . . "

These stanzas are based on the gospel story of the first Easter morn. St. John ' s account is pecul-iarly convincing. Read it quietly in an atmosphere of prayer. The rational approach is of course essen-tial but none the less the ult imate answer as always, lies in God.

Let his precious Word raise us up too: "I t was early on the first day of the week and still dark when Mary of Magdala came to the tomb. She saw that the stone had been moved away from the tomb, and came running to Simon Peter. So Peter set out with the other disciple (St. John ) to go to the tomb. Simon Peter went right into the tomb, saw the linen cloths on the ground, and also the cloth that had been over his head. Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb also went in; he saw and he believed. Till this moment they had failed to understand the teaching of scripture, that he must rise from the dead".

To Wipo, the last lovely word and prayer: "That Christ is truly risen f rom the dead we know. Victorious King, thy mercy show!"

JUNIOR Congratulations are in order to Matthew Kiernan from second class

who won 1st Prize in the "Spraoi" Christmas Art competition.

There were over 4,000 entries from all over Ireland in this compe-

tition so this is a magnificent achievement. Well done, Matthew!

On Thursday 26th and Friday 27th March, the children from

the classes of Ms. David, Ms. Strattan, Mrs. Johnston, Mrs. Corduff

and Ms. Mulkerrin, sang at the Cor Fheile in the Mansion House.

Mr. Oliver O'Brien - former Head of Music, Carysfort College, who

adjudicated the choirs - complimented the children on the very

high quality of their music and costumes. Many thanks to all the

parents and to Cathie Flynn for all the trouble they went to in

dressing up their children and doing the make-up. They really were a

colourful sight.

With the pending state visit of the King and Queen of Sweden

on April 8th, the school will be immersed in the culture of "Pippi

Longstocking" by the Swedish author Astrid Lingstrom. The school

was asked by the Swedish Embassy to present some of the stories of

the mischievous girl with two plaits, to the children, in recognition

of the visit of the royal couple. The Embassy has presented our

school with the complete volume of the Pippi Longstocking books.

An exhibition of some prints of the life and times of Pippi will be

held in the top hall during the week of the State visit.

Did you see our playground, featured in the Evening Herald a

few weeks ago? The surface of our playground was, last year,

decorated with games such as Giant Snakes and Ladders, Simon

Says etc. The playground was designed and painted by the young

people of Killinarden Youth Reach under the guidance of Leonard

McDermott.

SUMMER CAMP:

The dates of the Summer Camp are from July 6th - 17th and

August 17th to 21st. Enrolment brochures will be available in the

very near future. The children and staff wish you all a very happy

Easter.

SENIOR Senior Hurling:

The Senior Hurling campaign for the Herald Cup has commenced with two good wins to date over our local neighbours, St. Mary's -Rathfarnham and Scoil Treasa - Firhouse. With another four games to go in the League stage of the competition, hopes are high that we can reach the play-off stages. The two wins to date resulted from good overall team performances but those who particularly caught the eye include Barry Condron, Gavin Fleet, David Curtin and Colin Moran. lomair Treacy has performed well at centre half-back. Gavin Fleet was "Man of the Match" against St. Mary's and Edward McAuley ditto against Scoil Treasa. Camogie:

The Camogie team are playing for the Irish Permanent Trophy this year. Our matches got off to a good start on Thursday 19th March when the girls played Scoil Naithi in Bushy Park. They came from 2-1 down to a 3-2 victory, a sign of the determination of this team. Everybody played well and the win was due to some strategic posi-tional changes. Well done, girls! - and thanks to the parents for the lifts. Junior Hurling:

Thanks to the great interest being shown by the boys in 4th and 5th class, we are fielding three junior panels this year. Our 'A" panel played their first competitive game recently and were unlucky to lose narrowly to Scoil Treasa, Firhouse in a hectic finish. Conal Keaney, Paul Goodall, John Madigan and Kenneth Treacy were among our hardest workers on the day. With three more League flames to go a place in the knock-out stages is still a oossibility.

The 'B' panel will be looking to Bobby Murphy, Hearse Fitz-patrick, Ross McGauran and Ronan Barrett for inspiration when they begin their League campaign in the near future. Good form has been displayed so far in challenge games.

Firhouse also provided the opposition in our opening 'C' game and despite losing the boys played with admirable enthusiasm. Alan Waters, Cillian Moloney, Ciaran Brennan, and Craig Guthrie showed planty of skill. Games against Rathfarnham and Blanchardstown are next on the list for this team. Choir News:

The Junior and Senior choirstook part in "Cor Fheile na Scoileanna" in the# Mansion House on the 19th and 23rd of March. Both choirs sang very well and received excellent reports. At the moment the choirs are working hard preparing for the Feis Ceoil, Feis Maitiu and Cork Choral Festival which all take place in April. Senior School Gossip

Congratulations to Miss Monroe who got married during St. Patrick's Weekend.

Well done to Mr. C. Kearney, who has recently become the proud father of a baby girl. News has just reached us before going to press that Mrs. Maher has had a baby boy. (There must be something in the water in the staff-room!!!)

A special congratulations must surely go to Mary McGuire, one of our Speech & Drama teachers in the school, who finished in the top ten and was awarded a special diploma in the Scottish Inter-national Poetry Competition.

Active Retirement Association

SPRING H O L I D A Y - Eight members of Knock lyon Act ive Re-tirement Association enjoyed five days in the Ryan's Hotel , Kil l-arney recently, where the meals were sumptuous, and dancing took place night ly to a lively orchestra.

One day a tour was organized to Muckross House, and on St. Patrick's Day we were taken over the mountains to Kerry Bog Village Museum and Glenbeigh, Ring of Kerry.

On another day we attended an unusual Crafts demonstrat ion, and on yet another evening the slides and lecture about gardening were very informative.

Bowls, table tennis, swimming pool, sauna and steam room kept the members active and relaxed.

I ^ ' J A V e r y S p e c i a l V \ > E x p e r i e n c e !

It was the enthusiasm of a visiting lady who spoke about her exper-ience of it one Sunday after Mass that persuaded me to try it. Not knowing precisely what was involved / felt a little anxious as I went to the Senior School that first evening. There, all the sixty five part-icipants assembled and met the thirteen people who would be dir-ecting us retreatants during the week that followed. Among the directors were priests and religious sisters, but most were lay people. All of them had experience of Scripture study and meditation. Each retreatant would receive individual direction over the retreat period.

On that first night the method of the retreat was explained to us, and then there was group prayer and meditation. A meeting with one's director followed. Each retreatant was to spend half an hour every day over the retreat period in reading and meditating on a passage from Scripture, and in the evening would meet the direct-or for half an hour of discussion.

/ was verv happv with my experience. Surely, / thouqht, / and those of us who had Sister Eileen to direct us were singularly fortunate. When all assembled on the final evening however, I was amazed that the reactions of all other retreatants were just as en-thusiastic. The retreat had been a very special experience for all, and one which cannot be described or done justice to, in a short note such as this. And the directors were, by common consent, a remark-able group of people.

What was it about this experience that moved people so much? It was the fact that each retreatant had been brought apart in a strangely beautiful way from the world and its noise, away from the pressures and anxieties of daily life, and drawn closer to God through His Word; and shown how to continue to draw closer to Him by this means.

And these directors — why were they so remarkable? Because they, ordinary people, are loving disciples of Jesus drawn dose to Him through meditating on the Word of God, and beautifully communicating its effects. They helped us each day to enter a space of quiet, gentleness and peace.

Yes, as / have said, there was something very special about it.

The A.G.M. of the Knocklyon Community Council was

held on 30th January last. In his address, the Chairman Bill

Meagher gave a brief account of the development of the

Council since it was founded, and he then reviewed the

work of the Council during 1991. Some of the matters

dealt with during the year came under the following

headings:

(a) Planning applications and development proposals

(b) Crime prevention - talk given by two Senior Garda

Officers

(c) Lecture on Drugs given by a member of the Drugs Squad

(d) Tidy Up Week during which estates competed for the

Mary Muldoon Trophy

(e) Environment Competition for the Max Nason Trophy

The Chairman hoped that the following matters would

receive attention in the coming year:

1. Monitoring of the Southern Cross Route Motorway

which will have a huge effect on Knocklyon.

2. The obtaining of sufficient Class 1 open space for re-

creational and sports requirements.

3. Development of Neighbourhood Watch Schemes.

4. Development of a fully functional Sports Sub-Cttee.

5. Support for the Post Primary Education Committee.

Mr Meagher thanked the outgoing officers and members of

the Community for their work throughout the year, and

the new Council was then elected for 1992 (see below).

(Courtesy of Cllr. J. Hannon) KNOCKFIELD MANOR ESTATE

The developers of Knockfield Manor Estate are in receivership. A schedule of remedial works required to bring this estate to Council taking in charge has been prepared and costed. This is being forwarded to the guarantors for appropriate action and it is expected that the necessary works will be done within the next few months.

(Courtesy of Cllr. M. Muldoon) SCHOLARSTOWN ROAD - FOOTPATH

Because of the narrowness of Scholarstown Road between Orlagh Grove and Beverley Estate, the pro-vision of a footpath would involve acquisition. There is no finance available for this work.

SCHOLARSTOWN ESTATE - SIGNING A nameplate for Scholarstown Estate will be erect-ed adjacent to the entrance off the re-aligned Scholarstown Road.

SUMS ALLOCATED FOR THE COMING YEAR as part of the 1992 Parks Programme -

1 Beverley Court Estate (Planting and Tree Sur-gery) £6,000

2 Templeroan/Scholarstown (Planting) £5,000

3 Orlagh Grove (Planting) £15,000 4 Woodfield (Basic Development ... £20,000

SOUTHERN CROSS ROUTE A public enquiry was held in October '91 into the Motorway Scheme and the Environmental Impact Study for the Southern Cross Route. It lasted 8 days and the Environment's inspector must now make a recommendation to the Minister, who will confirm the Scheme or otherwise. The commence-ment date of works and completion date (approxi-mately three years later) is dependent on the date of confirmation (if given) by the Minister.

FIRHOUSE ROAD IMPROVEMENT SCHEME The Department of the Environment was asked for funding for the completion of Phase III of the Scheme, but due to limited funds it was not pro-posed to make special grant assistance. Another letter is being sent by the Council to the new Minister in the hope of a better response.

All involved with the K. V.G. with to thank most sincerely ly those who attended our recent Fashion Show in the Spawell Leisure Centre. There was a terrific turn out on the night, especially when one considers the other equally important parish functions being held that same night.

We hope all our supporters enjoyed the evening as much as we who participated in the Show did — our grateful ap-preciation also to our sponsors, the Irish Permanent Build-ing Society, Our advertisers, and everyone involved in the night in any way.

A special thanks to Liz Curtis. The Committee, Knocklyon Variety Group

* Teams still in Cup Competitions

Winning Leagues and Cups is a bonus, bu t the real achievement is par t ic ipa t ion , c o m m i t m e n t , team spir i t , sportsmanship and pride. So no mat ter what team a boy is p lay ing on — the most or least successful — the impor tan t th ing is that he is needed by his team mates, his manager and the c lub itself.

In many ways the club's team of the year, so far, is our under 12Bs. This team passed th rough the hands of several short te rm managers and might have been disbanded, bu t along came ihe team's saviours, Paul Holohan and son, and wha t a t u r n a round! BALLYBODEN G. A A. AND CAMOGIE CLUB

The juvenile hurling season has resumed on an excellent note for the club. Our U14A hurling team began with two good victories and the U14Bs had a good win and a draw. The two teams compete in our local competitions at Division One level and will eventually have to compete against each other.

Both of these teams are now gearing up in preparation for the countrywide Feile na nGael competition at dub level. The panel will be chosen by the selectors from both the A and B teams.

The under 16 hurlers are beavering away in their competition and doing quite well.

At under 15 level we are becoming a force to be respected fol-lowing an impressive victory over Northsiders, Craobh Ciarain.

We have just launched two new under 10 hurling teams and all the young hurlers in the Saturday morning under 9s coaching session have moved up a notch so there is now some space for new children who wish to begin hurling.

Footballers will also be welcomed, of course. The Football competitions continue. Under 10, 11, 12 foot-

ballers and hurlers alternate weekly, while under 13, 14, 15, 16 footballers will have some matches during the week.

The U16 footballers having beaten St. Jude's and Trinity Gaels in the last two weeks have now completed their league programme by achieving runners up position. This team was most unlucky to be knocked out of the championship by St. Vincent's.

The under 15 team are on course to win their league. The under 10, 11, 14 footballers are all well in contention in their respective leagues.

A Table Quiz w i l l be held in the Club at 8 .30 p.m. on A p r i l 2 4 t h and players' parents w i l l be especially welcome.

Our representative on the K n o c k l y o n C o m m u n i t y Counci l is J i m m y Mu lker r in , phone 941769 .

The club is at present seeking the provis ion o f a pedestrian crossing near the c lub house.

BUDDING AUTHORS Well done to the seventy children f rom four th classes who entered the Write A Book Project organized by the Drumcondra Teachers recently. Congratulat ions to the four girls who won rosettes. (See pho to page 9)

GOAL IS REACHED Congratulations to Mark Brennan and a group of friends from Col-aiste Eanna who recently organized a novelty race to Galway to raise funds for GOAL. The lads found various means of transport and they would like to thank all the companies which sponsored their journey. They had a target of £1,000 before they set off and so far have exceeded that by £800. Their appearance on "Jo-Maxi" helped to highlight their project.

Well done, lads. . . • • • • • • • • • • • a
