The Parish Pump was started in 1979 toprovide a free community magazine in theparish. It began as, and still is, a joint venture,

combining the church magazine and village magazine.The Parish Pump is sponsored by the Parochial Church Council and DebdenParish Council. Both bodies contribute financially to the cost of running themagazine by means of a donation, received annually. It is intended that themagazine reflects all aspects of village life within the parish and provides anopportunity for community matters to be raised. In addition to the informationrecorded in the magazine, our sister publication, the Debden Directory provides ahost of useful contact numbers for services ranging from bus times, local plumbers,doctors and restaurants. If you do not have a copy, please contact a member of thecommittee.

The magazine has editors but no official reporters. Consequently, an interestingmagazine depends on articles, news, etc. coming from people in the village. The

closing date for submitting material is: the 12th

of each month.The editors job is to edit. This means fitting the material into the space availableand trying to ensure there is a reasonable balance of views on controversialsubjects etc. Consequently, it is not always possible to publish everythingsubmitted and sometimes changes have to be made to the length of a contribution.Non topical articles cannot always be published in the next issue but will appearlater unless you are told otherwise. Contributions of up to 400 words have a betterchance of being published in full than longer ones.

submitted will be automatically featured on the website. EDITORIAL

In editorials, we often refer to individuals and groups in the village,describing and celebrating what has been going on. However, as aneditor, I know I do not raise the profile of the Searle Trust which isadministered by the Essex Community Foundation with an advisorypanel of 5 members who live in the village.

So this month I decided that the Searle Trust should have an extramention. It has just donated a considerable sum of money to threeimportant organisations: to the new Village Hall for architects fees; to

the Shop to enable a new toilet to be installed; and to the School forwork on the playground. All these organisations will thank the Trustand it will continue to receive and consider applications for grants but Ithink it is worth pausing for a moment and realising how manyDebden organisations and individuals have benefitted from itsgrants. So I want to say thank you.

Of course in order to receive these grants, it is necessary that wehave forward looking and thoughtful organisations and individuals.The letter from the Waddacor family (p 9) reminds us what a friendlyand helpful village Debden is. I was at a meeting the other day and,when we told the facilitator how many groups belong to Debden

church, she was astounded and said how lucky we were to have somany interested parties within a small village.

And so we are. The list of volunteers willing to help with fitting out theproposed village hall continues to grow, people are already organisingChristmas events t the church fair, the village Christmas party. Yetwhat makes the village extraordinary is that all the above goes on butthere is always time to remember. That is why the church, onRemembrance Sunday, will be full; class 5 of the Village school willtake their usual part in the Remembrance ceremony on the 11th. Notonly will we remember soldiers who died for their country in two worldwars as well as more recent wars but we will remember those peoplein Debden who have died recently.

We will remember; we will not forget and villagers will go oncontinuing to build and sustain a caring, forward looking community.

NEWS

New village hall gets first funding boost

Plans will be on show at special village meeting

The fund to build Debdens new village hall has received a big boostwith a grant of 10,000 from the Searle Trust. News of otherfund-raising plans will be revealed at a special village meetingon Tuesday November 5 at 8pm in the Village Hall where you willalso be able to see the preferred design for the new hall.

Money from the Searle Trust, set up to fund community projects in Debden,will cover most of the cost of preparing architectural plans, first step in theconstruction programme.

The grant in two tranches follows a bid by the partnership driving theproject, comprising the New Village Hall Group (NVHG), the village hallTrustees and Debden Parish Council. Two further funding bids have beenmade and others are in preparation, which, if successful, could make asubstantial contribution to the total cost of 350,000 and enable buildingwork to start in the spring of next year.

The design brief for the hall specifies a traditional look in keeping with thecharacter of the village and an interior with a feel of spaciousness. A

separate meeting room will enable two functions to take placesimultaneously. The footprint of the building will be 370 square metres,roughly 50 per cent larger than the existing building, which will bedemolished. The new building will be on a site facing the existing hall andbacking on to the recreation ground.

Pavilion refurbishmentThe sports pavilion will remain and be refurbished to bring its appearance upto the standard of the new hall. The parish council will set up a group to planthe refurbishment.

Fifty Debden residents have now volunteered to help local contractors withaspects of the internal fit-out. More information, your questions answeredand first sight of our new hall at the meeting on November 5.

This was the only night the hall was available outside of half term, explainsStewart Luck, NVHG chairman. We realise it clashes with Newportfireworks but we hope everyone understands and supports us by coming tothe meeting theres always Saffron Walden fireworks at the weekend. Dear Editor,

Back in April 2012, myself and Val Riley registeredDebden New Memorial Hall witheasyfundraising.org.uk which is a great way to raisemoney for charities, schools, sports clubs, communitygroups, and other good causes just by shopping online.

Since then 59.51 has been raised, 7 people have

registered, but only 4 have used the site and one ofthose has moved out of the village.

I buy my kids uniform, dog food and sundries, gifts fromAmazon for birthdays and any clothes we need as afamily, plus I ordered a new washing machine online. Ihave personally raised 48.78 through this website.

We are a nation of online shoppers and I see deliveryvans from Ocado, Tesco and Sainsburys, as well asJohn Lewis, DHL, UPS and Parcelforce whizzing aroundthis village on a daily basis.

If everyone who shops online just took 2 minutes toregister their details with easyfundraising.org.uk,

selected Debden New Memorial Hall as their preferredcharity, install the auto reminder option,(which pops upevery time you hit a company who donates and it isliterally one click to claim a donation) just think howmuch we could raise for a new hall. It costs nothing asthe donations are made by the company and not by theshopper. Christmas is not too far away so now would bea good time to register.

With so many Debdenites shopping online, WHY is thisnot being used more?

In memory of John Mawer

Most people in Debdenwould have known orrecognised my fatherwalking with one of hismany dogs through thevillage, or at least heard hisbooming voice as he calledfor the dog to return. Dogswere a big feature of my

growing up; you mayremember his belovedBreeze and for the lastthree years he had beenaccompanied everywhereby Spencer, an affectionate

Jack Russell who he rescued from Blue Cross. Dad was an enthusiasticwalker and we used to walk for miles at weekends whatever the weather; myfather had an amazing knowledge of the countryside around Debden andnever got lost!

Village life and the Church were very important to Dad, who was a sidesmanfor many years. He was a great supporter of the village cricket team andpresented the players with special caps to be worn on match days.

Sport was one of Dads greatest loves and he was an avid follower of bothrugby and cricket. He would enjoy going to Twickenham or Lords as well asto local venues to support his teams with gusto, flask at hip and return homehoarse from energetic cheering.

During family holidays, Dad always entered fully into the spirit of the thing.In 1978 we spent a week in Northumberland and in spite of poor weather weended up walking for miles along Hadrians wall in the pouring rain singingGreen Grown the Rushes O at the tops of our voices.

My father described himself as a people person and this was exemplifiedby his interest in others, his love of meeting new people and his delight inentertaining. He loved hosting parties accompanied, in earlier years, bydancing to his beloved jazz music. When Dad was still working I would meet

him on Fridays at Liverpool Street and we would catch the 6.36 to AudleyEnd, frequently enjoying a few G&Ts in the bar with friends, ensuring thejourney passed amicably and in a slight haze!

Hello old boy, have a drink is a phrase that all his friends will recognise andI am sure that as you read this, the memory of that cheery invitation willbring a smile and a fond memory to mind.

He will be terribly missed. God rest his soul. Carolyne Mitchell

FAREWELL FROM ROSEMARY COTTAGE

As many of you know already, we left Debden at the end of September afterhaving spent seven-and-a-half fantastic years in the village.

During that time we made so many friends and have been very fortunate tohave been made to feel so welcome. Right from the early days when Frankfrom the White Hart lent us his ladder when removing the trees just beforewe demolished the old bungalow; when Dave Paton stopped and chattedabout what we were up to; when the Magness family pulled our land rover

out of a ditch at midnight in the middle of winter; meeting Andrew Burchallwhilst perched on the roof removing tiles; Alastair & Lois offering us coffeewhile we were up on the scaffolding in the middle of winter, and borrowingtools from the Birds. We could go on and on...

Before we arrived in Debden we had heard it was a very friendly village,but until we had moved in and had our first Progressive Supper under ourbelt, we didnt appreciate just how social it was. Friday evenings in ThePlough were great opportunities to meet and catch up with friends. Tennis,table tennis, walks, the odd cricket match, delivering the Parish Pump andlooking after the flowers at the pump ensured ongoing interaction with themany aspects of village life Debden had to offer.

In summer we will certainly miss arriving home after work and poppingacross to join friends for a drink and poppadoms at Yuva (the Goslings can

be very persuasive), or the chats to those passing by en route to the shop,or the winter walks to The Fleur in the snow.

We would also like to say a huge thank you to Colin & Julia Magness forarranging and hosting the farewell do for us, and all those who assisted andwere able to come along.

Well be in the UK (renting a barn near Hever Castle in Kent) until aroundmid-December before we hope to relocate to Guernsey. Its not that far sowe do expect some visits!

So wed like to say one final thank you to everyone for making our time hereso enjoyable. Debden is a special place with special people. If only we couldtake it all with us. At least we can take the memories.

NEWSFROMTHE PARISH CHURCH OF STMARY

Dear Friends,

November is the month of Remembrance. In recent weeks, I havebeen very moved to read of a number of acts of selfless heroism, aswell as determined courage from members of our armed forces.Notable among these is the bravery of Warrant Officer Andy Peat,based at Carver Barracks, who saved the lives of several British andDanish soldiers by putting his own life at dire risk; he is the first soldierfrom outside Denmark to be awarded the Anders Lassen medal; hehas also been awarded the George Medal. Then there are the twoyoung soldiers, who have lost limbs in explosions in Afghanistan.These two young men have courageously learnt to live life in a newway with artificial limbs and will shortly be rowing the Atlantic to raisemoney for Help for Heroes. Their stories remind us of the enormouspersonal costs of striving to bring peace in troubled parts of our world.On Remembrance Sunday, along with members of the Royal BritishLegion, soldiers of the Royal Engineers, members of the Air TrainingCorps we will be remembering soldiers like these whose lives and thelives of their families have been changed forever by their injuries, as

well as all those who died during two World Wars, in the Falklands,Kuwait, Iraq and in Afghanistan. It is to them we owe the relativepeace in which we live. We remember them with love and gratitude.

When a loved one dies, the aching grief and loneliness can be hard tobear; the memory of those we have loved is always with us. OnSunday 3

rdNovember at 3pm in Wimbish Church there will be a short

quiet service in which we can remember those very special people,with love and thanksgiving. All are warmly welcome.

The peace of God however endures for ever and we can know it inour hearts and minds. Jesus assured us that he gives us his peaceand that we should not let our hearts be troubled or afraid. When we

know Gods peace, it can give us such strength and courage for thefuture. Please pray for our injured soldiers and for all who mourn.

Dear Pump Reader,

We celebrated Harvest in church on Friday 27th September. The wholeschool led the service through a series of readings, songs and prayers.We sang a range of songs with actions including Easy Peasy Harvest, Pop

goes the Peas andGlory Hallelujah.

Children broughttheir Harvest giftswhich along with thechurchs gifts havebeen donated toJimmys NightShelter in Cambridge.It was lovely to seeso many parents andfriends of the schoolat the service.

The children were invited by Hilary Davey to take part in a Best DressedPotato competition. The children took their entries down to the churchwhere they were judged by the congregation at the Sunday HarvestService. All of the entries were very creative. The winners werecelebrated in our whole school assembly. Ursula Lyons our Chair ofGovernors and Hilary Davey presented the prizes. (see photo on p 25)

Our girls football team was given the opportunity to attend a pretournament coaching session at Newport Free Grammar School inOctober. The girls were split into teams which also consisted of childrenfrom other schools. The teams participated in a variety of activities and

mini matches. The girls are looking forward to taking part in thetournament on October 16th. More news on this in the next issue.

Five of our School Council representatives attended a School CouncilConference which was held at a local primary school in October. Thefocus of the conference was, How to be an effective School Council citizenship, succession planning and passing on skills. All our

representatives enjoyed the conference and gained a lot from it. Theirnext task will be to feed back to the full School Council and pass ontheir newly acquired skills.

Works at Howe Farmhouse

First of all apologies to all of you that drive to Saffron Walden via WaldenRoad for all of the builders vans and cars that were parked outside HoweFarmhouse on a daily basis. We are also very pleased to be back inDebden after 10 months in Saffron Walden. We have been replacing one ofthe single storey extensions at the back with a two storey one, updated theplumbing and electrics and trying to make the house airtight and superinsulated.

We were motivated by the Passivhausstandard which is a rigorous set of

requirements for building energy efficientbuildings. There are very few of these inthis country; the Hastoe development inWimbish being a notable exception. If youcan meet this standard then the housewont need any heating beyond what theoccupants, equipment and sunlightprovide.

This standard is challenging for a new build and almost impossible in atimber frame retrofit; so we are aiming to keep the house warm with just awood burner on all but the coldest days.

For the old timber framed walls we firstly removed all of the cement based

render, which is not breathable and filled the cavity with sheeps woolinsulation. A membrane was added to the outside of the frame to minimiseair leakage; we then attached wood fibre board to the frame to providefurther insulation and the lime render was put directly on to this. In order tokeep the wall dry the theory is to have the materials more breathable as youget closer to the exterior of the building, as the walls dry from the outsiderather than the inside.

The new walls of the extension have been filled full of Celotex and we havealso replaced all of the windows with new timber framed triple glazedwindows that hopefully dont look too out of place. As the house is air-tightwe have installed a mechanical ventilation system that recovers the heatfrom the extracted air and uses it to heat up the incoming fresh air. We are

also planning to install a wood burner that will heat the hot water as well asprovide heat to the house.

Just Gardening

During my 12 years working for Hopleys Plants at Much Hadham, thequestion customers most often asked was how can I achieve colour in mygarden all year round? Although this does require a little planning, it can beachieved if you think about foliage first rather than flowers. Is the plantevergreen or will it disappear for 5 months of the year? Both shrubs andperennials display not only greens of many hues, but also gold, purple, silverand variegated leaves. Autumn shows many of them in another light whenfoliage colour changes again.

Foliage also comes in many shapes any sizes and a number (say 3 or 5) of

one perennial variety grouped together is more effective than a few differenttypes dotted around. Those plants which flower for just one month a yearare really only suitable for very large gardens so its a good idea whentempted to buy a pretty plant to consider whether it has more than oneseason of interest such as flowers, seed heads or berries - and do you havethe right place for it?

Even a small garden needs a tree, but it a good idea to do your homeworkfirst. Dont rely too much on information given to you at a garden centre, theyjust want you to make a purchase! I suggest you invest in the excellentreference book The Readers Digest Encyclopaedia of Garden Plants &Flowers which will tell you just about all you need to know before you plant.The Winter Garden by Jane Sterndale-Bennett and maybe that useful littlebook, How to Garden by Alan Titchmarsh could be put on the Christmas list.

For example, you might consider the semi-evergreen Cotoneaster Cornubiawhich has an attractive slightly weeping habit, white flowers in spring and isladen with red berries in autumn. Although not evergreen, the crab applefamily (suggest Malus Evereste, Butterball or John Downie) have prettypink flowers in spring and attractive coloured apples for jelly in autumn.Some Sorbus (rowans) have a light canopy and Joseph Rock may performfor you. When the habit is more upright you can get away with planting tallergrowing specimens such as Prunus Spire and the evergreen JuniperHibernica. Shrubs which grow into small trees as does the spindle tree and

purple-leaved elder are other suggestions.

Maybe brighten a corner of your garden for winter with the variegatedevergreen Euonymus fortunei Emerald nGold or Silver Queen which growinto medium-sized shrubs, but remain healthy and colourful all year andtogether with Erica carnea heathers give a long season of interest. A group ofthree Cornus Midwinter Firewill display bright yellow/orange stems. Plant infront of evergreen shrub Viburnum davidii, with a cluster of Tete-a-tete daffs

beneath. Choisya Sundance can be underplanted with variegated ivyGoldheart or Green Ripple and a collection of purple violas. Plant thembetween now and March. (contd p 24)

The annual harvest supper,organised by Debden ParishChurch, was once again a greatsuccess. Over 60 people, includingfamilies and young people, tuckedinto cottage pie or medium (or evenhot) chilli followed by the traditionalfruit crumbles and lashings of

cream.As usual, brains were taxed withtwo quizzes: the traditional oneabout Debden and its history and amore general one on currentaffairs, blue plaques and sport.Mica Brown won the DebdenHistory Recorders quiz while therewas a tie between Henry Blackieand Edward Doust for the generalone.

TANG TING TWINNING

THE STORY OF BISHNUGIRI: Part I - A cry for help

We all know that the Tang Ting Twinning Association does good work inhelping people in a small village in Nepal. A day care centre has beenestablished, a midwife employed to help the women and children of thevillage, and medical staff from Britain visit to do their bit. We know this andare impressed by how little it takes to make a difference in the lives of thoseless fortunate than ourselves. But sometimes the story of just one child can

bring it all home to us. Like the story of Bishnugiri. Stuart McArthur, one ofthe TTTA volunteers and a regular visitor to the village, told me about her.

'It was a couple of years ago. I was therewith Fiona Ormerod, a doctor from Britain.She had seen the people who had turnedup at her clinic when the village headman,Prakash Gurung, said that a mother hadbrought her daughter. She couldn't walkvery well. Could the doctor do anything forher? She was a pretty girl, about 19 yearsold, but she limped very badly. Her clotheswere very dirty and she looked very poorly.When Fiona took her boots off, we had ashock. Both her feet were badly burned -one foot was only a stump really. Hermother told us that when she was a babyBishnugiri had fallen into the fire. This is notall that uncommon in Nepal where woodfires are used extensively for cooking andheating; it was clear that she needed an

operation and probably some kind of prosthesis to enable her to walk. Fionacouldn't do anything more for her then, but she cleaned her up and wefound some clean clothes for her. We all felt we wanted to help her but whatcould we do?TTTA is a small organisation and we didn't have the resources to bring her

to Britain to get the treatment she needed. And there would have too manydifficulties about doing that anyway. We'd have to get Bishnugiri the treat-ment she needed in Nepal. But how?'Stuart told me how TTTA found a way to help Bishnugiri. But I'll leave thatpart of the story until next month.

Great News!

We are indebted to the Searle Trust for awarding funding, to enable us to

install a staff toilet in the Shop. The Stockroom will be re-organised toaccommodate this, so there will be no necessity to extend the building. Thetoilet will create a greatly improved facility for our Staff and allow us to be selfsufficient when the New Memorial Hall is under construction. New drains willbe installed across the Main Entrance to the Recreation Ground during theweek of half term, beginning 28

thOctober. We apologise that this will cause

some disruption, but access will be available at all times.

In preparation for this work, we have cleared out the Stockroom and havediscovered a set of metal free-standing kitchen scales which are surplus torequirements. They are in full working order and will be available to the firstcustomer offering over 10!

We would like to use our A Board outside the Shop to better effect. We

wonder if anyone in the village has access to an A3 colour laser printer, foroccasional use. Please contact the Shop if you can help us on (01799)541348.

Thousands of people realised that they were not prepared to meet theirmaker. One such person was Rachel Low, who told how the earthquakemade her tremble for her soul my mind was affected with a considerationthat I might be in eternity and that I was not prepared. As I was going homeI had a sense that every step I took I was drawing nearer to eternity ....... Isaw my sins to be numerous. Rachel went on to become an ardent Meth-odist. Fortunately for us Debden is not prone to earthquakes(!) but we canstill ask ourselves the question, are we ready to meet our maker?

October Parish Council Meeting

The Annual Return has now been returned by the External Auditor. Thecompletion of the audit will be advertised.

Local Transport

Pavilion

It was agreed that the pavilion, which is owned by the Parish Council, is inserious need of improvement. A new group will be formed to deal with therefurbishment and this project will be carried out at the same time as thebuilding of the new hall and will be in keeping.

Vegetation will be removed from behind the pavilion and the area levelled.

New Village Hall

A progress report was given on the New Village Hall. Plans will be presentedat the next village meeting on Tuesday 5

thNovember.

ECC Winter Salt Bag scheme

The order has been delivered by ECC. A note will be included in theNovember Parish Pump to inform residents that bags of salt are available foruse on pavements and roads which are not salted by ECC. If any residentswould be willing to salt a specific area of the village when conditions areslippery, would they please contact Roger Forster (541409) for a bag/s ofsalt. (see p 37)

The 16th Annual Debden and Debden Green Progressive Supper

Saturday 1st February, 2014

How time flies, and it is that time of year again! For the regulars, the16th Annual Progressive supper will be held on

Saturday 1st February, 2014.

For those who have not come across this type of event before, the aim is toshare a three course meal with other people in the village, with the costsshared equally between all taking part. We have found that a very goodevening can be had for 15 per head, which includes all food and

accompanying drinks.We meet up in the Plough and you are told where you will be going forstarters and at 8pm everyone departs in differing directions. Your starterhost will already have been given a sealed envelope telling each guestwhere they will be going for main course and at 9pm we all set off again forthe next venue. When you arrive at your main course hosts home, you willfind a completely different set of diners.

Finally, at about 10.30pm we all move again to the final venue, which isusually the village hall, for puddings, cheese and biscuits and generalpartying.

The evening does rely, of course, on everyone being willing to providesome aspect of the catering. However, it is all scientifically worked out

beforehand in response to my planning letter asking for volunteers toprovide the various courses! The cost of any food and drink supplied byyou will be re-imbursed out of the 15 per head charge.

However, I would stress that the object of the evening is to get together andshare a sociable evening amongst friends. It is not a cordon bleucompetition and if cooking is not your thing then the supermarkets are fullof ready made food! It is also not always necessary for everyone toprovide, or host, a course, depending on the numbers attending.

The evening is a great way for everyone to get together and for newcomersto the village to get to know their neighbours. It has grown in popularityover the years (last year there were 98 attendees) and is open to anyone inthe village. If you are interested, please contact me and I will add you to my

list for this years event. I will email, where possible, in mid November thosewho attended last year, and write to everyone else. However, if you do notget either a letter or email from me, please contact me as sometimes emailcan go astray!

Debden Football

Debden faced their first difficult opposition of the 2013 2014 campaign with a home match versus EynesburyRovers. The match started off slowly with the two sidesplaying very different styles of football. Eventually Debdenstactics paid off when Jordan Parrishs cross into the middleof the box was eventually struck in by Alan Porter. Debden

then found themselves being pressured by Eynesburys counter attackingstyle and Eynesbury scored the equaliser. Debden replied very quickly anda superb through ball from Alan Porter played Zak Rayner through and he

took it around the keeper and slotted it home before half time.In the second half Debden was first to strike and a corner from Tom Moselysaw Jordan Parrish get the highest and headed it in to make it 3-1 Debden.However, Eynesbury then went on the attack and scored two goals to level it3-3 but it wasnt long before Debden was piling on the pressure to get backin front. Some lovely attacking football from Debden saw Adam Porter finishhome a great team goal and it seemed that Debden had picked up the threepoints. However, in the final few moments, Eynesbury took a desperate shotat goal which slipped through the hands of Mikey Sharp to equalise andmake the final score 4-4 in a match that Debden felt should have been theirsfor the taking.
