CHURCH ETIQUETTE

The Eucharistic Fast: It is a law of the Church that persons

receiving the Holy Eucharist abstain for at least one hour

before holy communion from any food and drink except for

water and medicine. The elderly (those over 60 years of age)

and those who care for them can receive holy communion even

if they have eaten something beforehand. Also, a priest who

something before the second or third Masses even if there is

less than one hour between them. The Church asks this of us

before receiving holy community out of reverence for Christ’s

presence in the Eucharist. This is no ordinary food, but “bread

before communion helps us prepare fittingly for this most

intimate encounter with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

My dear Parishioners, Let me begin by thanking all of you for your prayers and

good wishes and support especially over this past week. I

have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of your concern

for me. I regret that my collapse during last Saturday after-

noon’s liturgy caused such alarm but am grateful for the un-

believable swiftness with which you came to my aid. For all

of this I am deeply grateful. If lessons are to be learned

from such an experience, I confess that I have learned mine.

As one of the doctors reminded me, “You have to remember

that you are 86 and not sixteen!” I shall try to act according-

ly from now on, but as the saying goes, “You can’t teach an

old dog new tricks.” But we—you and I—will give it a try!

I am most grateful to our faithful Deacons and Staff for step-

ping up and assisting you and me so competently. My five surviving classmates and I will celebrate our 58th

anniversary of ordination on Monday, April 25th, feast of St.

Mark the Evangelist (there were 12 of us ordained), two of

whom preceded me in serving here at St. Paul of the Cross,

Fr. Alban Harmon and Fr. Gregory Paul. By a marvelous

coincidence, this Sunday, April 24th, the African American

community is celebrating the 130th anniversary of the ordi-

nation of Father Augustus Tolton, the first slave-become-

priest, in this country! To be associated with such an out-

standing witness to the Gospel is a great joy and honor.

Augustus Tolton has left us priests who have followed him

an outstanding example of humility and service to the people

of God. He certainly trailed faithfully in the footsteps of the

Master. Pray for me and my classmates that we may follow

in his path.

- Fr. Jerome, C.P.

pasada.

P. Jerome, C.P.
