Archbishop Smith’s Pastoral Letter “Living in the Word of God” Living in the Word of God” Living in the Word of God” Living in the Word of God” invites us all to renew our focus on Scripture as we answer the call of the Holy Father Pope Francis. The complete letter can be found at caedm.ca/letter & www.sacredheartchurch.ca. A portion follows:

It is truly beautiful to be a Catholic. What begins at Baptism is a way of life that is shaped by sacred teachings, strengthened by sacramental celebration, and marked by loving service of neighbour. When this life is fully embraced in faith, hope and charity, it bears within itself the promise of eternal life! Is it any wonder that I thank God often for the decision my parents made to have me baptized?

Heavenly Father, we thank You for your tremendous gift of the Sacrament of Marriage. Enable us to grow in our intimacy with You and with each other. Teach us the beauty of forgiveness so we may

become more and more one in heart, mind and body. Strengthen our communication with each other, and help us become living signs of your love. Help us to be examples of commitment, love, and service to our

families and children. Make us a sign of the unity which Jesus prays for at the Last Supper. We open ourselves to the guidance of your Holy Spirit, who

————A message from the Archdiocese of EdmontonA message from the Archdiocese of EdmontonA message from the Archdiocese of EdmontonA message from the Archdiocese of Edmonton For the 27th World Day of the Sick, Pope Francis is asking for a culture of generosity to be shared. He speaks into the ministry of St. Mother Teresa, who cared for the sick in such a beautiful way. For all who care for the sick in our healthcare institutions in homes, your gift of pastoral presence is met with gratitude. “You received without payment; give without payment” (Mt 10:8). These are the words spoken by Jesus when sending forth his apostles to spread the Gospel, so that his Kingdom might grow through acts of gratuitous love. The staff and volunteers who generously show this love may never know the impact you have on those who receive your generosity of compassionate service. Pope Francis, ending his Pope Francis, ending his Pope Francis, ending his Pope Francis, ending his Message for the 27th World Day of the SickMessage for the 27th World Day of the SickMessage for the 27th World Day of the SickMessage for the 27th World Day of the Sick, shares:, shares:, shares:, shares: I urge everyone, at every level, to promote the culture of generosity and of gift, which is indispensable for overcoming the culture of profit and waste. Catholic healthcare institutions must not fall into the trap of simply running a business; they must be concerned with personal care more than profit. We know that health is relational, dependent on interaction with others, and requiring trust, friendship and solidarity. It is a treasure that can be enjoyed fully only when it is shared. The joy of generous giving is a barometer of the health of a Christian. I entrust all of you to Mary, Salus Infirmorum. May she help us to share the gifts we have received in the spirit of dialogue and mutual acceptance, to live as brothers and sisters attentive to each other’s needs, to give from a generous heart, and to learn the joy of selfless service to others. With great affection, I assure you of my closeness in prayer, and to all I cordially impart my Apostolic Blessing. Vatican City, 25 November 2018

When Jesus proclaims He is the Messiah, the people of His hometown drive Him out of town and intend to kill Him. It is a fascinating parallel to the first reading from Jeremiah, which proclaims how God has a plan for His people in their mothers’ wombs. For Jeremiah’s people, this prenatal plan is meant to inspire courage for a prophet to speak words that others find difficult to hear. Isn’t it interest-ing that Jesus’ community also struggles with this, to the point they would have killed Him? They are afraid and cannot see a way to trust that God’s plan is bigger and better than theirs. We believe every single person, from the moment of conception, is created with a purpose and a plan. That means we are called to wrap support and hope around mothers (and fathers and babies) regardless of the circumstances of conception. It also means that people we disagree with are also part of God’s plan, and that hatred, violence, and condemnation are affronts to the dignity of human life. The radical truth of our faith is that no amount of disagreement, discomfort or fear justifies violence or taking another’s life.

In both the first reading and the Gospel, Isaiah and Peter struggle with their own sinful-ness when God asks some-thing of them. Isaiah has a vision of God purifying his lips, and Peter argues with Jesus’ instructions to put down the nets, only to pull in a huge catch and then apolo-gize. God is going to call us to do His work in spite of our sinfulness. The question is will we let God forgive us so we can get on with trans-forming the world with His love? The second reading reminds us that Jesus died for our sins to reconcile us to eternal life in God. Who am I

to refuse that gift?
