Christ the King—St. Anthony Parish Burlington May 31, 2020

My dear family in Christ, While many of our religious holidays have been embraced by the secular world, e.g. Christmas, Easter, even St. Valentine’s Day, there is one Feast that the secular world has not embraced: Pentecost. This might be because it is harder to market the descent of the Holy Spirit than the birth of a child, the resurrection to new life, or even the life of a saint dedicated to the love of husband and wife. I would like to propose this week that Pentecost, though not celebrated in the secular realm, needs to be celebrated by us, and not just in church. Why do I propose this? It is because Pentecost is the reason we are able to be the Church. Think about the events recorded in Scripture about Pentecost and the descent of the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit that empowers the apostles to leave the Upper Room and the fear that filled that room behind and go out to all the world to tell the Good News. Consider the life of St. Paul and the effect the Holy Spirit had in his life to bring about a radical conversion and a life in service to bringing the message of Christ to so many. Pentecost is about transformation and witness. Transformation because of the presence of the Holy Spirit, leading sinners to forgiveness and righteousness. Wisdom because it is the Spirit who empowers us to embrace the call of Christ to go out to all the nations to teach them and baptize them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the reason we can live and share our faith with others, especially in the face of difficulties and challenges. The Holy Spirit also enlivens the Church when it gathers together for prayer, especially the Eucharist. It is the Spirit that lifts our hearts and minds to God the Father through Jesus Christ as we offer the sacrifice of the Mass. It is by the power of the Holy Spirit, invoked by the priest, which affects the miracle of the bread and wine becoming the Body and Blood of Christ. It is the Spirit, called down upon the water of the font, which washes away sin and gives divine life in Baptism. It is the Spirit that helps us become soldiers for Christ in the sacrament of Confirmation. Without the presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church, we would remain unable to be who we are called to be as children of God. For all of these and many other reasons, we should celebrate Pentecost, not just as the end of the fifty days of Easter, but as the beginning, the birth, of the Church. May the Holy Spirit enflame our hearts and empower us to go forth to witness to Christ and to share our belief that we are saved in and through His death an resurrection. Come Holy Spirit, renew our hearts, our parish, our Church, and renew the face of the Earth. In the love and power of the Holy Spirit, Msgr. John J. McDermott, VG

SUPPORT OUR LOCAL CHARITIES Everyone is struggling during this time of uncertainty. Please remember those in our community in need, and especially the organizations that provide essential services for them. ANew Place, Birthright, Aspire Together, Feeding Chittenden, and Joseph’s House are striving to continue to meet the needs of those less fortunate. Please consider supporting these charities, especially financially, if you are able. Contact the parish Social Outreach Committee at ckstasocialjustice @gmail.com, or call the parish office for more information.

PUBLIC MASSES It is very likely that we will be able to return to the public celebration of Mass beginning June 1st. However, there will be some essential requirements as we ease back into gathering as a community of faith: The obligation to attend Sunday Mass is still

suspended until further notice. No one is obligated to attend Mass for now.

If someone is not feeling well, out of love of neighbor, they should remain at home and watch Mass on TV.

Those in higher risk categories, over 65, pre-existing health issues, are encouraged to stay home.

Churches can only accommodate 25% of their capacities. Meaning for both of our churches, no more than 80 people in attendance for any one Mass.

Social distancing must be maintained in Churches. A maximum of 4-5 people per pew. Family members may sit together, others must maintain 6 foot spacing, including in the communion line.

Every other pew will be taped off. Hand sanitizer will be used. Please bring your

own to church. Masks are to be worn in churches as an act of

charity toward others. Holy Communion will be distributed only in the

hand. Collection baskets will not be passed, but will be

placed near the backs of the churches to receive offerings.

We ask that people bring their own wipes to wipe down pews after each Mass.

Additional instructions will be given at Masses.

THE BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL Though the pandemic has put much of the day-to-day on hold for us, our parish and our diocese are still persevering. Please consider your gift to the Annual Appeal. Each gift received is used to strengthen and serve our 69 parishes, 13 schools, and 117,000 Catholics throughout Vermont. Visit bishopsappealvt.org. Watch the message from Bishop Coyne. Please prayerfully consider making a gift so the Catholic Church in Vermont remains financially stable. Read the Inland See page in the bulletin for more information.

STAY CONNECTED, STAY INVOLVED The Diocese of Burlington is offering many different online ministry opportunities for those who would like to continue to share and nurture their faith with others, despite being so far apart. Please visit www.vermontcatholic.org/events for more information and to register. Join a prayer group or a Bible study. Attend a webinar about ways to keep the faith alive in your home and family. On the diocesan website, you can also watch the daily 8:00 AM Eucharistic Adoration and the 12:05 PM Mass. Pray along with the daily Rosary, or listen to a daily reflection from the Bishop on the diocesan Facebook Page. Information regarding all these ministry opportunities and more can be found on the “Spiritual Resources” page at www.vermontcatholic.org.

ANEW’S INDEPENDENCE PLACE For the past year and a half, our parish has cultivated a special, supporting relationship with ANew Place, providing meals once a month to the homeless community there. Though we cannot continue providing meals at this time, we encourage parishioners to support them in another way: ANew Place has an amazing opportunity to provide affordable housing to formerly homeless individuals who participate in their transitional housing program. Just a few weeks ago, Cathedral Square approached ANew Place about co-managing their Independence Place property located at 130 Mansfield Ave. This property provides 7 apartments, an office, laundry facilities, and community rooms where they can provide after-care supports while moving guests towards independent living in their own apartments. Over the next six weeks, ANew’s goal is to raise $36,000 to fund this project. This amount represents the operating costs for July-December and helps ANew Place qualify for a matching grant from the UVM Medical Center. Please consider making a donation to ANew Place to help them toward this goal. Contact Kevin Pounds at [email protected] or 802-391-0980 for more information and to donate.

FEED THE HUNGRY The Social Outreach Committee encourages you to drop off non-perishable food items at either of our churches when you stop in to pray. We are resuming collecting of donations to bring to the Chittenden County Food Shelf.

HELP WITH A YARD PROJECT Elderly neighbor seeking help with garden and yard. Are you a young person who would be willing to help an elderly neighbor with some

garden and yard work this summer? If so, please contact the parish office for more information.
