For many persons, the desire to know God is innate. However, most of us struggle with how to connect with God in a meaningful way. Alpha is a great way to reawaken and enliven your relationship with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Alpha has been exper ienced by 29 million people--including Catholics, Protestants, Orthodox Christians, and non-believers - in 169 countries. Over 160 people experienced Alpha last spring at St Mary’s. Many reported that Alpha has brought them to a deeper and more meaningful relationship with the Trinity. They also said that Alpha has made them feel connected to others in the parish in a significant way.
Alpha begins with a meal, is followed by a shor t video, and then a small group discussion occurs about topics set forth in the videos. There is no fee for the Alpha course and childcare is available for ages 5 – 12. Registration is on our website at www.stmaryglenshaw.org/alpha.

RELIGIOUS FORMATION Faith Sharing for The 20th Sunday Ordinary Time
“Tormented by a demon”, that is what is mentioned about a girl from Cana in this Sunday’s gospel. Reports come in daily about the demons rampant in our society. Addictions to drugs, alcohol, pornography, gossip, or any other destructive habit can be healed by Jesus as was the girl whose mother pleaded for her. Jesus commends the FAITH of the mother and His word effects the desired healing. What a great witness to stir up our faith in prayer for healing for any “demon” that may be tormenting oneself, a family member, or the many who are part of the ‘statistics’ of those addicted. BE as persistent as was the Canaanite woman was with Jesus.

August 21- Saint Pius X was pope at the beginning of the 1900’s and had as his motto “to restore all things in Christ”. He is pictured in the stained glass window as a reminder of his love for Jesus in the Eucharist.
August 22 – The QUEENSHIP of MARY. Stand in our church to let the light shine through the colored window dedicated to Mary, our Queen. Thank her for her enlightening guidance.
August 23 – Saint Rose of Lima, a generous woman who devoted her life to prayer for others and service to the poor in her town in Peru. She was the first saint of the Americas to be canonized.
August 24 – Saint Bartholomew, was a fr iend and apostle of Jesus who took the Good News to others. He is the patron saint of Armenia.
August 25 - Saint Louis is best known as a fair , wise, and loving king of France who ruled with justice, and firmness and fostered religion, learning and the arts.
Saint Elizabeth Bichier founded the Daughters of the Cross, dedicated to care for the sick and education of the poor. She helped rebuild faith among the people following the French Revolution.

GOD SQUAD
Who is God to you? Begin a mission for Jesus this year with the youth group at St. Mary’s. We will meet every Sunday night from 6-8pm. Anyone in 9-12th grade are welcomed.
Reflection: For the last few weeks the Gospel has been speaking about Faith. In Matthews Gospel today “Jesus says, O women great is your faith.” She asked for help for her daughter who was possessed with a demon. The disciples asked Jesus to send the women away. Jesus replied “ I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” First we have to recognize that we are lost sheep without a relationship with God. Then we have to ask him to help us and then receive his forgiveness, love, and mercy. He will be there if you have the faith to ask and the eyes and ears to see him and hear his voice. Jesus came to be one of us and to show us what he offers us through his sacrifice. This is tough to understand unless we pray for the understanding. Turn your house into a house of pray try it you might be surprised!

The Diocese of Pittsburgh is once again planning its annual Golden Wedding Celebration for couples who are celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2017. This year’s event will begin with Mass at St. Paul Cathedral on Sunday, October 22nd, at 2:30 p.m. Bishop Zubik will be the main celebrant and a light reception will follow in the Cathedral hall. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Once the way was cleared for additional Eucharistic Prayers, those who were appointed to compose them had to look deep within the tradition for sources. One of the prescriptions for new prayers was that they be “unencumbered by useless repetition.” From the start, therefore, the writers knew that the old Roman Canon, which had the priest bowing and crossing himself many times in a long, complex prayer, was not a model of simplicity. Aside from the prayers treasured by Eastern Christians, there is an obvious model from ancient Rome. For about a hundred years now, the historical text “Apostolic Tradition” has shed some light for us on the shadowy shape of worship in the early church. In it, its author, Hippolytus, took care to record the actual texts of worship used at the time. He himself has a shadow side, since he was so ardently conservative in his tastes that he broke ties with the Bishop of Rome and became first in the line of history’s anti-popes. At the eleventh hour, however, he reconciled with his enemies and actually died a martyr. In fact, he was shipped off to the Sardinian mines as a slave with the true pope as his companion in chains. Because his tussle with the pope was over theological innovations and not liturgical texts, we are sure that his account of the style of Eucharistic Prayer in the third century is accurate. It forms the core of today’s Eucharistic Prayer II. CALLED TO ACT IN GOD’S NAME “Let all the nations praise you!” (Psalm 67:4) today’s psalm response exclaims. In the psalms and other Hebrew scriptures, this kind of invocation is actually an invitation to God to act, to intervene in human lives in a manner that will cause everyone—not just the Chosen People—to give praise. Stated a bit more strongly, it is something of a “put up or shut up” challenge to God, the sort of strong statement the psalmists of Israel, trusting in their intimate and loving relationship with God, were not afraid to make. The Gospel has its own exclamation, announcing the appearance of the Canaanite woman with “Behold!” (Matthew 15:22) “Behold!” is a scriptural flag that tells us that God is about to act or announce something through an individual or a situation. In the case of Jesus, God was going to act through this woman, whom nobody among Jesus’ followers would have believed to be an agent of the divine will. Like the psalmists, we might passively inform or perhaps even actively challenge God to do something so that everyone will come to belief, but God will always turn the tables on us. It becomes our calling, our duty (as it was for Jesus) to behold the situations and persons of our daily lives so that God can act through us, so the Kingdom can be announced through our living.
