THE GREAT ADVENTURE CONTINUES!

*** Please MARK YOUR CALENDARS: Due to the OLPH feast day celebration on Sunday, June 28, The Great Adventure DVD will be shown before the 10:30 am Mass, from 9:20–10:15 am, not afterwards. The Saturday night showing will be at the usual time. Remember, you can also watch it with any of the groups that meet at OLPH on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights or Wednesday morning. Remember that promise to Abraham of a Kingdom? It’s almost time! After watching Lecture #10: Conquest and Judges – Part 2 between Saturday, June 13 and Wednesday, June 17, our next assignment is to read 1 Samuel. Our new color is Purple, the color of royalty. It’s vacation time, a great time to catch up on Bible reading and study. Take advantage of the opportunity to check out CDs of lectures you may have missed or come watch a DVD at your convenience.

Fact: A translation of the Old Testament from Hebrew to Greek done in the third century B.C. was called the Septuagint, because it was said to have been done by 72 scholars in 72 days. In it, the single scroll of Samuel was divided into two books, called the first and second Books of Kingdoms, and another scroll, extending the history, continued with Books 3 and 4. Jerome modified this naming to “Kings” in the 5th C. Latin Vulgate. Our current system of 1 & 2 Samuel and 1 & 2 Kings was adopted by Protestants in the 16th C. and by Catholics in the 20th C.

THE OLIVE BRANCH

WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE WILLING TO TAKE OVER THE OLIVE BRANCH MINISTRY—TO MANAGE THE STORE AND SCHEDULE VOLUNTEERS FOR THE STORE’S OPEN HOURS.

Kay McDuff, who has worked hard to build and maintain this ministry to our parish and the surrounding area, is now looking to retire. Previous retail experience would be helpful as well as excellent customer service and management skills. The Olive Branch is a ministry of Our Lady of Perpetual Help—a Catholic bookstore and gift shop staffed by dedicated volunteers. The store has been in operation for 25 years and carries books, cards, rosaries, jewelry and other gift items. All net proceeds from sales go directly to support the operational expenses and ministries of our parish. The Olive Branch is currently open two days per week.

If you are interested in serving your parish through this ministry, please contact Kay McDuff in the Olive Branch or Elizabeth Zirkle in the parish office (387-0491) for more information.

“God’s light shines on Earth and bathes everything in splendor and beauty.”

—Pope Benedict XVI

SACRIFICE Joining in one common act of worship is essential to the proper understanding of the Mass as a sacrifice. There is only one acceptable sacrifice in the New Testament – that of Christ himself. The Mass is a sacrifice because it brings us into contact with that eternal sacrifice of Christ. We share in the sacrifice by joining ourselves to Christ’s act of worship of the Father. There are obviously great depths of meaning linked to our sharing in this sacrificial act of worship. This brings us to the heart of Christianity and the heart of the Eucharist. The death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus is the central fact of history and the central theme of Christian spirituality. Thus full, active participation in Christ’s act of worship is the basic goal of liturgy. It is through that action that we are transformed.
