Be prepared to put our life
on the line
The “sending” was a going in the place and name of Jesus. The first instruction seems very harsh. Take a good walking stick and sandals – no
food, money, collecting bag or no extra coat. What does this say about the correct attitude for a disciple? It means a putting of one’s life on the line. We are disciples by virtue of what we bring to the role but by the call of God. The journey is to be taken in the name of God. God will provide through the generosity of the hearers of the Word. The disciple is a channel between God and God’s people. The second instruction is also clear. When invited to stay, stay put for the duration of the visit. There seemed to be some warning about ‘shopping around’, perhaps for better accommodation; perhaps because the hospitality of poorer people was ignored in favour of the rich. Later, some would take this to the extreme, and some itinerant missionaries were difficult to
dislodge, so an extended stay came to be read as a sign of a false prophet.

The Pastor’s Pen After Mass last Sunday I was chatting with a parishioner, she marvelled over the numbers of Augustinian Priests who had served in the Cairns Diocese over the years. No doubt, having viewed the names of deceased Augustinian’s in each Sunday’s Bulletin had sparked off her thinking! I am also aware of the extraordinary contribution made by the Augustinian’s, the challenges and the hardships they encountered and I am reminded that most served here in their youth, while offering energy and missionary zeal to the spread of the gospel.
Those sentiments could well be expressed for all Religious Members of Congregations having served in our Diocese.
It would seem that Pope Francis’ thinking is along those lines when for the universal Church he has called this to be a Year of Consecrated Life. In his message Pope Francis outlines the three aims for the Year: to look to the past with gratitude; to live the present with passion; and to embrace the future with hope. “It calls for following in the footsteps of past generations in order to grasp the high ideals, and the vision and values which inspired them.” Bishop James Foley and the Priests of the Diocese gathered last Friday at St Monica’s Cathedral with Religious and Laity for Mass followed by a Dinner, to say ‘thank you’ to all religious for their labours in the Diocese in the past and present.

Liturgical Notes
‘The function of proclaiming the readings is by tradition not presidential but ministerial. Therefore the readings are to be read by a reader, but the gospel by the Deacon or, in his absence, by another Priest. If, however, a Deacon or another Priest is not present, the Priest Celebrant himself should read the gospel’ (General Instruction of the Roman Missal 59). The Church does not expect the ministers of the Word to read the text—they are called to proclaim the text. The assembly’s role during this proclamation is to listen to the proclamation—even the presider shares this role with the assembly, as he is not expected to proclaim. Nowadays, many in the assembly actually read the text; this certainly is not expected—we are all called to listen with the ear of our heart so that we may be touched by God’s Word. Our reading of the text should be done before the celebration as our way of preparing for Mass. WE can them come ready to listen. ‘Your merciful love, O God, we have received in the midst of your temple. Your praise, O God, like your name, reaches the ends of the earth; your right hand is filled with saving justice.’ (Entrance Antiphon)

If you cannot do a kind deed, speak a kind word.
If you cannot speak a kind word, think a kind thought.
Count up, if you can, the t easure of happiness that you would
