Ash Wednesday is THIS Wednesday Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period of personal renewal undertaken by Christians to better themselves. (SEE the following paragraph.) Blessed ashes will be distributed after the homily at the scheduled Masses: 7:30 AM, 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM (Spanish), 12:15 PM, and 5:30 PM. SEE todays’ INSERT, “Ashes don’t DO Anything!”

LENT: 2020 Lent begins on Wednesday. So, what is your Lenten strategy? How might you improve your “spiritual self?” Here are the ancient, biblical suggestions: prayer (conversation with God) fasting (doing without a food you enjoy) and almsgiving (i.e., charity as an unselfish virtue) Here’s your chance, here and now, to enrich the meaning of the Faith you practice. Remember, as a baptized Christian, each of us is “another Christ.” Imagine that! Make your Lent, 2020, an actual “life altering” experience!!

Lenten LITERATURE for You! As announced last Sunday, there are FREE “Little Black Books” from the Diocese of Saginaw, Michigan for you at the back of the church. Please feel free to take them. Due to your support of the MAY Parish Literature 2nd Collection last May, we were able to purchase them (and many others) for you!

Sophia, ChurchMouse Reporting unseen works of faith, hope and charity to uplift you.

Ready or not Lent begins on Wednesday! “Lent is a time for discipline, for confession, for honesty, not because God is mean or fault-finding or finger-pointing but because he wants us to know the joy of being cleaned out, ready for all the good things he has in store for us.” Bishop N.T. Wright is an English New Testament scholar, Pauline theologian and Anglican bishop

SECOND COLLECTION: “In House” Today, the second collection is for our own Parish FUEL. Thanks for making our Parish Family strong and dedicated to the welfare of all God’s People.

2020 Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal

Please prayerfully consider donating to the Appeal soon, especially if you have never done so before. Our parish monetary goal is $75,500. We hope to involve more parishioners. Bright white Appeal envelopes are stacked at the back of the Church. Because of your support our Archdiocese will be in a better position to do immense good in: sustaining numerous charitable offices, agencies, and programs to provide compassionate and effective assistance to those most in need. We are able to offer financial support to our parishes and schools that are struggling to serve people of all backgrounds in distressed communities. We are able to ensure excellent academic and spiritual formation in our schools, and the best of catechetical training in our parishes. And finally, we are able to care for our retired clergy and Religious men and women who have given their lives in service of the Church and to prepare our future clergy who will give theirs in the years to come.

ASH WEDNESDAY & LENTEN REGULATIONS As we do every year at this time, we offer a few remarks and clarifications that may be helpful regarding Ash Wednesday and the Lenten season: In the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, we are informed that: “the two elements which are especially characteristic of Lent – recalling of baptism (or the preparation for it) and penance – should be given greater emphasis … It is by means of them that the Church prepares the faithful for the celebration of Easter, while they hear God’s word more frequently and devote more time to prayer.” The traditional practices include prayer, fasting and almsgiving as means of developing a more direct sense of the preparation for death. Many choose to make daily Mass a part of their Lenten routine. The Church obliges to fast all those between the ages of 18 and 59 years, and to abstinence all those over 14 years old. Fasting prescribes that only one full meal a day be taken; the other two meals should be smaller and not equal the main meal. Abstinence forbids the eating of meat. Note especially:

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence.

All Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. Please bear in mind that these restrictions are not to be seen negatively, but as a uniquely positive way to prepare for the joy of the coming Easter.

+ Ash Wednesday and Abraham House + As we have done for the past several years, we will provide a special collection box for Abraham House at all the Masses. This is not an Archdiocesan collection, but one that Holy Trinity takes up to aid the brothers and sisters and lay persons who work so tirelessly in the Bronx with the families of the incarcerated, the “forgotten people.” This is the same group for whom we put up the Angel Christmas Tree each year. Put in a penny, put in a pound – look! You’ve started your Lenten almsgiving! * * * * * * * * Schola Cantorum – The Spring Concert

On Sunday, March 22nd, 7:00 PM, the Holy Trinity Schola Cantorum will perform A German Requiem (Ein deutsches Requiem) by Johannes Brahms. Brahms’s Requiem sets to music various passages of Scripture which concern not the actual dead, but those of us who are left behind to mourn the dead; those who are seeking comfort in a time of uncertainty. The Schola will be accompanied by orchestra, along with baritone Christopher DeVage and soprano Emily Moore. Spread the word – bring family and friends for this performance of an unforgettable classic masterpiece.
