Teaching is Everywhere

Conflicting Materials

Anyhomeschoolparentwillbefacedwiththedilemmaofwhattodowhenyoucomeacrossmaterialinthecurriculumyoudon’tlikeordisagreewith.Whilenocurriculumwilleverbeabletosatisfyallthebeliefs,opinionsorvaluesheldbyeachfamily,thereareseveralapproachesthatyoucantakeinthesesituations.

Oneapproachistoskipoverthematerialinquestion.Anothersuggestionwouldbetousethisasanopportunityforaspecialteachablemoment.Reviewthematerialwithyourchild.Discussyourfeelingsaboutthematerial,ideaorvaluepresented.Taketheopportunitytoprepareyourchildforthediversityofthought/opinionintheworldandtheneedtobediscerningofprinciplesandideasthatmaychallengeyours.Thereisadefinitebalancebetweenhavingthefreedomthathomeschoolbringsandtheresponsibilityyouassume ineducation.
