Former educators to be recognized at Felix Fan Fest They came, they served ... and they stayed. Former area educators will be recognized and honored at this year’s Felix Grundy Festival at the Felix Fan Fest on Friday eve-ning, July 11 on the grounds of the Town and Country Golf Course from 6:30-9:00 p.m. The program and recognition event will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. There are 44 retired educators who still reside in Grundy Center. This prestigious group includes former administrators, Su-perintendents Bob Crouse and John Ste-vens, and Principals Harry Dole, Howard

Hockert and recently-retired Steve Vander-Pol, as well as numerous former elementa-ry, middle school, and high school teachers, athletic coaches and fine arts directors.

“The service from this group and impact they made to the community and school over the last 60 years is difficult to quan-tify,” Fan Fest organizers said. “The many lives and families influenced by them, and the benefits Grundy Center as a community has received from them has been significant and lasting. “It is an important reason we chose to recognize and honor this group during the festival’s second annual Fan Fest,” said Jen Ralston, Festival Committee co-chair. Recognition of the former educators will take place on the Grundy Center Proud

Stage starting at 7:30 p.m. Remarks and memories will be shared by Grundy Cen-ter High School alumni, Loren Kruse, Jim Evans, Matt Bockes and Kerri Dole Barn-house. Former educator, Joyce Batty Dum-mer will talk about her 11 years in Grundy Center, especially remembering the year her third-grade class decided to show just how much they cared about the future of Grundy Center and what the results were of their efforts. Among the list of educators to be hon-ored will be two of its most seniored, See FAN FEST page B6

The 2014 Felix Grundy Festival in-cludes an opportunity for children to be ‘on parade.’ The Junior Parade is sched-uled for Friday, July 11 at 6 p.m., begin-ning near the Grundy Center Elementary School playground, and heading north on Eighth Street to the Courthouse Gazebo, just in time for the opening festivities of the Festival. The theme for this year’s junior parade is “A Day at the Movies.” Center Theatre manager Mike Steinmeyer will serve as Grand Marshal of this year’s parade and lead the kids on the parade route. “I started working at the Center Theatre in the spring of 1995 as a sophomore in high school,” Steinmeyer said. “I began managing the theatre in February, 1999. I take pride in continuing to be a part of the Center Theatre because I feel it is an important asset to our community and our county. Especially as I raise my children,

I know I want the theatre to be here for them and for future generations. The Cen-ter Theatre is one of the pieces of the good

life we find in small town living. In my almost 20 years with the theatre, I’ve met so many wonderful people that make the job enjoyable.” Children of all ages are invited to take part in the Junior Parade by riding their tricycle, bicycle, scooter, motorized vehi-cle, or walking the parade route. Children may be part of the parade ‘as is’ or may choose to dress in costumes as their fa-vorite movie character, decorate their bike or vehicle, or create a group entry for the event. No pre-registration is needed to join the parade. Simply arrive on Ninth Street east of the elementary school playground by 5:45 p.m. Each child participating will receive a prize. Judges will award prizes to the most creative entries that best de-pict the parade theme. The annual Junior Parade is sponsored by the Kids Savings Club of GNB Bank.

Roberts, who re-cently turned 90 years old, has been making pies for more than 70 years and has been sharing them at Manly Drug in Grundy Center and at Hol-land’s Lone Tree Inn for many years. She has been catering in the area for about 40 years. Roberts will have the honor of riding at the front of the parade and greeting the large crowd expected at the popular event.

GRUNDY CENTER — Several local businesses will be sponsoring this year’s Felix Grundy Festival inflatables. The theme for this year’s festival is Camp Grundy—It’s S’more Fun, and the planning committee’s goal has been to create a camp atmosphere for families with

activities such camp crafts, a camp bonfire, and camp playground. The inflatable games will be open for six hours on Saturday before the parade from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and then reopen from 5 to 8 p.m. after the parade. The popular laser tag is slated for Friday

evening from 8 to 11 p.m. at the Courthouse Square. This, too, is a free event. “It was the most popular attraction at last year’s festival,” Bowen said. “Children of all ages enjoyed this and we even had adults waiting in line to play.” Campers and their families will also

be roasting marshmallow for S’mores, on Friday evening at the Courthouse campgrounds from 8 to 10 p.m. Like most of the other events at this year’s festival, the S’more roast is free thanks to local sponsorship.

From page B4Doris Chabel and Bob Chabel, who came to Grundy Center 60 years ago. They taught elementary and middle school children and junior high science and math for more than 35 years. Bob, who had previously taught at Ainsworth and Spirit Lake, also coached track, especial-ly remembering a group of athletes who qualified for the Drake Relays. Both have fond memories of their teaching years. So fond that when it was time to

retire in 1989, they decided to make Grun-dy Center their retirement home. “We liked the community, our home and friends. The location was great and it is close to a larger city,” said Bob. “It has about everything one would need for a good life,” Doris added. The Fan Fest is sponsored by four alumni-owned and managed business-es: Phelps Implement, Heavy Equipment Manufacturing, Precision Lawn Care and Concrete and AmericInn Hotel and Suite.

Their sponsorship covers Fan Fest oper-ational costs, musical entertainment and beverages. Food has been donated by the following Grundy Center businesses: Piz-za Hut; Johnny Ray’s; Tasty House; Town & Country Golf Club and Eldora HyVee and Fareway. The Felix Festival Fan Club was estab-lished in 2013. “Its purpose is to secure individual do-nations to support the Felix Grundy Festi-val,“ Ralston said.

Individual membership one- and five-year Felix Fan Club memberships are available. In 2013, Fan Club memberships provided 25 percent of the festival’s an-nual donor revenue. The Fan Fest is free to Festival Fan Club members, while ad-mission for non-members is available. All proceeds go to support the annual festival now in its 27th year. Memberships may be purchased at the Fan Fest or by sending a check to Felix Grundy Festival, PO Box 162, Grundy Center, IA 50638.

Five to enter Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame

Clint Young Randy Peters

Steve Bergman Dana Schmidt

Roger Peters

The Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame announced the election of two new athletes and three coaches to be inducted during Felix Grundy Days festivities this summer. Elected to the Class of 2014 are Roger Peters, Randy Peters, Steve Bergman, Clint Young and Dana Schmidt. The honorees will be inducted during the Hall of Fame’s annual public ceremony on Saturday, July 12 during Felix Grundy Festival activities. A wall plaque commemorating each athlete’s sports career will also be added at the high school Wall of Fame alongside 66 previous inductees going back to 2004. Roger Peters (Class of 1937) was an outstanding all-around athlete best known for his abilities on the ball diamond, whether baseball or softball. Roger was a commanding presence whether blasting home runs, pitching, or playing first base. His baseball and softball career spanned from the late 1930s to the early 1960s. Randy Peters (Class of 1964) is the son of Roger Peters and played several sports for the Spartans, but made his mark as a track and cross-country coach. In an illustrious career, Randy lead his teams to three state championships and was himself awarded Iowa high school coach of the year honors four times. Roger and Randy are the first father-son combination to be elected in the same year. Steve Bergman (Class of 1976) was

another successful Spartan athlete who went on to make his mark in coaching basketball. Steve has won four state Class 4A basketball championships while coaching for Iowa City West High School. He has compiled more than 450 wins leading into this season and is still an active coach. Clint Young was the wrestling coach for the Spartans from 1971-1980 after winning an NCAA championship at UNI. Young

compiled a 66-27-2 dual meet record including four straight NICL Conference titles, and a second-place finish at the state wrestling tournament in 1976. Clint coached five individual state wrestling champions, two runner-ups, and 29 state qualifiers for the Spartans. Moving to Emmetsburg, Young chalked up two state championships and was twice more runner-up. He is also a member of the Iowa High School Wrestling Hall of Fame and the Coaches Division of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Dana Schmidt (Class of 2007) was a prolific distance runner in both track and cross country for the Spartans winning three state track championships and runner-up

honors in cross country. Dana also earned six All-American honors for Concordia University with 2 for cross country and 4 for track. He continues to own the school records for 3,200 meters and 1,600 meters both set in 2007. The Grundy Center Sports Hall of Fame was organized in 2004 by local athletic boosters. Its purpose is to recognize the contributions and accomplishments of athletes, coaches, administrators and contributors who have been involved in or supported the athletic programs of the community. Nominations for the Hall of Fame are welcome from the public and can be made through members of the committee.
