  • Imagine having to express your feelings for someone through the “language of flowers.” In Victorian times, a small, fragrant bouquet of flowers and herbs would do your talking for you—communicating what could not be spoken aloud in proper society.

Flowers could convey messages of love or dislike based on color, size, and arrangement. A bouquet of pink roses, peonies, and ivy, for example, would express the giver’s feelings of affection, bashfulness, and devotion for the recipient. Learning the special symbolism was such a popular pastime during the 1800s that dictionaries containing the meanings of flowers and herbs were published.

Each snap of the wrist and fan also carried its own meaning during the Victorian era and allowed women to communicate secretly to their love interests. For example, twirling a fan in the left hand expressed: “We are watched”—according to the first “language of the fan” manual, published by a fan maker in 1827, who distributed the booklet with the fans he sold.

Discover the language of flowers and fans, along with the rules and breaches of Victorian etiquette in this presentation by The Waukesha County Museum.

Discover Wisconsin’s frontier era and the history of American Indian tribes, French trappers, fur traders, loggers, lead miners, old-stock New England farmers, and the many European immigrants who settled in Wisconsin. Before the coming of the railroad in the 1850s brought an end to the frontier, life was a struggle.

Guest speakers from The Waukesha County Museum will present details about the life of the pioneers who settled and built Wisconsin during the 19th century. See and handle artifacts from the times and learn more about the homes, one-room schools, food, clothing, toys, games, and chores of those on the Wisconsin frontier.

Where the Hammock Hangs is a program

full of history and mystery, delivered by

an author who has spent seven summers

researching the land and Lake Superior!

    Join Pennington as she describes

    lighthouses, sunken ships, mining and

logging camps, vintage lodges, plus the

best places to stay along the way—be it

a lighthouse, hayloft, teepee, church, or

beer factory! If you know what “Up North”

means, you’ll love her stories about the

Upper Peninsula and the family’s beloved

    cottage in the “Porkies”—the Porcupine

    Mountains in Michigan.

Take a nostalgic glance backward with

A Walk Down Memory Lane, to the good

old days of the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. This

    historical, light-hearted program will detail

everyday life during the bygone years

of corner phone booths, party lines,

    hand-me-down clothes, doctor house

    calls, wringer washers, and outhouses.

Remember a time when percolating coffee

pots, mothers in aprons, and suppers

prepared from canning jars lining the

    pantry shelves were common, everyday

    occurrences. Vintage photographs

    complement the large antique collection

    Pennington brings along.

Enjoy the jaw-dropping true story of Sir

Ernest Shackleton and his crew’s epic

1914 travels aboard the ship Endurance.

    Pennington details the extraordinary acts

of the crew who triumphed over the frozen

    Antarctic expanse when danger struck.

    Considered the greatest survival story

    in history, Shackleton’s journey shows

how ordinary people can face adversity

    and emerge victorious. Pennington’s

    PowerPoint features dozens of authentic

    documents and stunning photographs

    taking during the expedition.

    Welcome, New Residents!

    All About Muskego

After nearly 30 years of service as a policeman, Mike Smul decided the timing was right to become a driver for Regency. He and his wife now live across the street from the Muskego campus. He likes to tell residents that while he’s still transporting people, nowadays he prefers the ones riding in the “back seat” behind him.

Mike makes every effort to be upbeat and entertaining with residents—“that means a more fun ride for them and a more funjob for me.” Laughter aside, Mike’s experience as a policeman resulted in a life-saving moment for a Regency resident. He noticed the woman choking during a lunch event, calmly told her to relax, raise her arms, and look up. The food popped out. Mike would say it’s all in day’s work.

“Laughter is the fountain of youth.”

What is Medicare? Medicare is health insurance for people: • Age 65 or older • Under age 65 with certain disabilities • Of any age with end-stage renal disease

What are Medicare Parts A, B, C, and D?Part A is hospital insurance. It helps cover inpatient care in hospitals and skilled nursing facilities, hospice care, and home health care. You automatically receive Part A once you register for Medicare. Part B is medical insurance. It helps cover physician services, medical equipment, and other services. Part B also covers many preventive services. You pay monthly premiums.

Part C describes Medicare Advantage plans. A Medicare Advantage plan is another way to get your Medicare coverage. In this case, both Medicare Part A and B coverage is provided by private companies that are approved by Medicare.

These plans cover all of the services traditional Medicare covers except hospice care and some clinical research studies.

Medicare Advantage plans may offer extra coverage, like vision, hearing, dental, and health and wellness programs. You pay a monthly premium for a Medicare Advantage plan. Medicare Part D covers prescription drugs for everyone with Medicare. If you decide not to join a Medicare prescription drug plan when you’re first eligible, you’ll pay a late enrollment penalty if you sign up for it at a later date.

To get Medicare drug coverage, you must join a plan run by an insurance company or other private company approved by Medicare. Each plan varies in cost and drugs covered.
