This week has been another busy week for many of our students at Papanui High School. We have had a group of 40 Year 12 students involved in a Mountain-bike camping experience at Hanmer Springs. As well, as our Production of ‘Into the Woods’, which had its matinee viewing on Wednesday for our contributing schools, Breens Intermediate, Casebrook Intermediate, and Heaton Intermediate. The Production ‘Into the Woods’ has shown on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, and has been very well received. A huge thank-you to the Director, Daniel Scowcroft, and the Musical Director, Georgina Rees-Stevenson, as well as the many other staff and students involved in this wonderful production. We thank you for your efforts, you have done an outstanding job. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Alexandra Boyd, who has been selected to represent New Zealand in the Women’s Waterpolo team as Captain. She will be travelling to Budapest in Hungary to compete in the World Championships next month. She will be away for last week of this term, and for the first two weeks of next term. We wish her much success. Lastly, I would like to remind parents and caregivers of the upcoming Junior Report Evening for our Year 9 and 10 students, on Thursday 6 th July from 6.00pm through to 9.00pm in J Block. We would encourage all parents and caregivers to make interview bookings via the school interviews website. The PTA have kindly offered to open the Second Hand Uniform store on the same evening, between the hours of 6.30pm and 8.30pm, and we would encourage all parents, caregivers, and students who require uniform items to take advantage of this opportunity. Year 13

The 2017 Senior Formal was held on Friday night at Addington Raceway. Through the hard work of the twenty five students on the formal committee, over 500 students, partners, and staff were able to come together for a night of dancing, photographs, and delicious food. As is always the case, we were incredibly proud of the way our students conducted themselves on the night. Their understanding of the sense of occasion was evident from their behaviour and the effort they went to for their formal attire. Organising a formal is no small task, and the students involved in the committee have learnt many valuable life skills. It also provided us with the opportunity to support ex Head Student Daniel Chew, and his photography business. Almost as exciting as seeing our students on the night, is the opportunity to reconnect with ex-students, either as formal partners, or as vendors providing services on the night. We would like to also thank those vendors who supported the event, and made the set up seamless, especially those that were in the position to give us discounts for their services. For families the night can become an expensive one, and the support of the following people meant we were able to keep the formal ticket price the same as it has been in previous years.

New Zealand Olympic Committee Sports Ambassadors Presentation

NZOC Sports Ambassadors Presentation – St Margaret's College, 19th June Year 10 students Brooke Teear, and Claudia Rogers, attended the NZOC Sports Ambassadors session with Olympian Gemma McCaw. Thirty-six Junior Sport Leaders from fifteen schools attended, where Gemma talked about her experiences in sport, in particular focusing on the Olympics. Gemma shared plenty of inspirational stories to help students think about their sporting future. Brooke and Claudia took a lot from it, and said they enjoyed hearing from someone that had been in a similar place to them at one point. It also helped them make some goals, and to look at where they want to be in the coming years.

Last month, Barbara from Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue visited the Papanui High School Adult ESOL students. She talked about the important work the rescue helicopters do, and their role in the Port Hills fire in February. Our students learnt that Air Rescue relies heavily on community donations, and needs to raise $7 million dollars annually to cover their running costs. They presented Barbara with a cheque for $350 which they raised during International Week in February by holding an International Food Fair. Students cooked food from their countries (Taiwan, Korea, China, Japan, Afghanistan, India and Malaysia) and sold it to teachers and students at school. We hope that this small donation will help them to continue their vital work in our community in the future.
