Principal’s Perspective Papanews Community Edition Friday 27 May 2016 On Tuesday evening the school held its annual Open Evening. Despite the weather, it was extremely well attended, with an estimated attendance of around 1200 people. I am very pleased that so many people from our community and beyond took the time to come into our school to see what makes Papanui High School such a wonderful place for students to learn. We all know choosing a secondary school for a child is a very important decision, and one that should not be made lightly. By visiting the school, our community has an opportunity to speak to people, assess the quality of the resources available, and make an informed choice about whether this is the right school for their child. In saying that, we whole-heartedly believe in the quality of what we do here, and take pride in being a learning centre that strives to meet the educational and social needs of all its students. Our area of Christchurch is a vibrant and growing one. Our aim is to be the focal point of education here, and we are increasingly becoming a school of first choice. On an evening like this, the public see the combined energy and enthusiasm of both our students and staff, and this is the best “advertisement” for our school. I would like to thank the over 100 student guides, and 100’s of other students, who helped in the different subject areas. Equally, I would like to thank our very dedicated and passionate staff. The feedback from the people attending was extremely complimentary, as they were full of praise for the staff, the student helpers, for what the school looks like, and stands for. We are Papanui High School, and we are proud of it. Papanui High School prioritises Academic Counselling - Conference Day Next Thursday, the school will be running its annual Academic Counselling Conference Day. This day is a vital component to support individual students’ academic achievement. As a school we have high expectations, and are striving to ensure each student reaches their potential. The Conference Day is designed to actively assist in raising student achievement. When students are actively aware of their own achievement and academic goals, they have greater ownership and responsibility for their success. To support this, we believe the inclusion and support of parents / whanau / caregivers with the form teacher is paramount. The Conference Day is one distinct opportunity when all three parties can actively work together to share a common goal. Over the last four years, student achievement has steadily increased. As a school we are committed to the continuation of this trend. Our goal is to ensure all students have the opportunity to achieve to the best of their ability, and ultimately gain qualifications that underpin their transition to further study or employment. Please prioritise this as a “must attend” meeting, and we look forward to sharing this day with you. Jeff Smith Principal

Board of Trustee elections—TIME TO VOTE!

Nominations have closed, and I am very pleased to announce that we have eight parents standing for the five positions on our Board of Trustees. I would like to thank them for putting themselves forward to represent the parent body of the school as potential Board of Trustee members. I would also like to encourage you to vote. I appreciate you may not know all, or any, of the candidates; there is a profile provided from each person standing, which will give you some insight to them as a person and to what skills/expertise they may be able to contribute to the school.

You should have received a voting form by mail. Completed forms are due back to CES (who is managing the election) by noon on Friday 3

rd June.

If it is easier, you can leave your voting form (in the official envelope provided) at the school’s main office, and we will ensure that these are all received by CES. Thank you for supporting this process.

Academic Counselling Conference Day—2nd May

Board of Trustee Elections—2016

ACADEMIC CONFERENCE DAY – Thursday 2nd

June 2016 BOOKINGS ARE NOW OPEN

Please visit the below website to book your interview for Conference Day…

www.schoolinterviews.co.nz

The event code is: sgtfq

Conference Day is an extremely important part of our Academic Counselling programme. On this day, the school will not run its usual time tabled classes. Instead, individual 15 minute meetings slots will be available for you to discuss your child’s academic progress. Students are only required to be at school for their 15 minute appointment and are to undertake independent study from home for the remainder of the day. However, if your child requires supervision, the study centre will be open from 8.30am -2.30pm.

Students are expected to attend their conference with their parents/caregivers, and it would be greatly appreciated if you could prioritise this meeting as an absolute 'must attend'. Students can wear smart casual clothing, rather than school uniform on the day.

Further information explaining the booking process has been emailed/posted to you. However, if you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.

We look forward to discussing your child’s academic progress with you.

I was fortunate enough to have a quick walk around on open night and see many of the Year 9 students promoting the school through their subject area, or by being a guide. It goes to show how proud they are of the school they have only spent just over a term in. We're now looking forward to Conference Day next week, to give parents an opportunity to discuss with form teachers how their child has settled, and what they want to get out of the year. I am sure this will be great start to their academic counselling process that will continue over the years ahead, with their form teacher as their mentor. Recently a number of Year 9 students, along with head students, and staff, have been visiting local feeder schools, to answer questions from Year 8 students before they arrive next year. This ties in nicely with an upcoming opportunity for a dozen or so of our Year 9's to meet with other Year 9's and Year 8's from our local cluster, to discuss transitioning into high school. I'm looking forward to taking part in that this year, and hearing the different experiences from all involved. Paul Anderson Year 9 Dean

The Art History Trip to Wellington was a real success with 21 students from Year 12 and Year 13 visiting the capital. Students were treated to presentations from five former students who are currently studying across a range of programmes in both Massey and Victoria Universities. A number of people commented on how impressed they were by the behaviour of our students, who represented the school well.

The start of Term 2 has been a busy one, with Year 9's involved in Stage Challenge, winter sport, cross country, open night, and of course the everyday learning going on in class. The rain managed to hold of for the second week of Wednesday sport, and for the school cross country on Thursday. It was great to see so much activity out on the field, with the girls’ Rugby, and Senior Girls’ Football games taking place alongside students learning and practicing their Archery skills. The Girls’ Football team had a great first win of the season against Villa, winning 5-2 on their home turf.
