The feedback to date from Open Night has been very positive and we are very appreciative of that. On Thursday during the day, we held our school cross country. Year 13 Geology Field Trip

Year 11

Year 13 Business Studies student, Bayley Vaeluaga, has written and published a handbook for students and parents all about NCEA, as a way to help support parents by providing information about NCEA in a simplified form. The book includes information about Credits, Resits and Resubmissions, University Entrance, logging into Parental Portals, registering for NZQA, useful apps, and study tips for students who are currently sitting NCEA assessments. The book is a useful resource which can give parents the confidence to understand what their child is going through, to give support and guidance. The handbooks are being sold for $15.00 each. For more information about the book and how to purchase a copy you can get in contact with the business through their email of [email protected] or through the Business's facebook page NCEAsy. All orders are delivered free.

Term 2 of NCEA, and the Year 11's are progressing nicely through their first year. Most are well on their way to achieving Level 1, and have settled nicely into classes and routines. On Tuesday it was great to see so many of them helping out on open night, whether it was in a subject area, or as a guide. It's good to know that students are still willing to put their hands up and get involved, even with the pressures of their studies. Just over twenty Year 11's are busy fundraising for a service trip to Cambodia at the end of 2019. Make sure to keep an eye out for opportunities to support these students in making this trip happen. It's been really nice to see the shift in focus this year ,and students putting in their upmost to make the most of what's been put in front of them. Paul Anderson Year 11 Dean

Year 11 History Experience

Congratulations to Su Ierome, 13Mlh, who came 2nd the Senior Samoan Language section of the SpacPac speech competition, held on Tuesday. Her speech was on sharing love and kindness.

Ninety Year 11 History students attended a seminar at the La Vida Centre featuring prominent Civil Rights activist Minniejean Brown Trickey, and Professor Clarence Lusane on Friday. The two have travelled from America embarking on a speaking tour to engage History students with their story and message. Minniejean Brown Trickey is one of the Little Rock Nine students who, despite intense discrimination, both violent and verbal, were the first to attend Central High School during 1957. Year 11 History students will be learning about this topic later in the year, so it has been incredible for them to have the opportunity to hear a first hand account of what it was like being a driving force for change. Professor Lusane, works at Howard University in Political Science, and shared interesting insights into the Black Panther movement, another topic that students will look at. The students really enjoyed their morning, and having the chance to hear a once in a lifetime address.

sPACIFICally PACIFIC Emerging Leaders Breakfast

On Friday two of our Pasifika leaders attended the sPACIFICally PACIFIC Emerging Leaders Breakfast at Shirley Boys’ High School. The breakfast was organised to bring together the education community and Pasifika community to inspire and celebrate Pasifika identity, language, and culture. This year the Emerging Leaders Breakfast recognised those Pasifika students who have demonstrated leadership and service at the highest levels in their respective schools. The celebration aimed to strengthen the partnership that students, families, communities have with teachers , pr incipals, ter t iary providers, local, and central government. Three Year 13 Peer Support Leaders, Chloe Hawthorn, Meredith Harrison, and Phoebe Maguire, spoke at the Papanui Rotary Club on Thursday night, to share their experiences of the peer support programme. They spoke about their motivation to become leaders, the excitement and anticipation of orientation, and the camp, as well as challenges they faced. The valuable life skills they have learnt while being leaders were put to the test, as they ran activities for the Rotarians which mimic those we use during the Year 9 orientation. A huge thank you to Papanui Rotary for hosting us, and for their financial contributions to the programme. There was a positive buzz at the end of the meeting, with club members amazed at the way our students get to know the needs of their Year 9 group, and many Rotarians offering opportunities in the future for leadership development.

Oceania Karate Championships From May 18th to the 20th, Jade Taylor and Aidan Batt competed in the Oceania Championships in Auckland. Aidan competed on the Saturday, and had a tough division. He came up against Australia first round, and was winning 4-0 until suffering a major hit to the head. This was unfortunate as the technique from the Australian was uncontrolled and executed after being told to stop. This hit caused Aidan a severe concussion, meaning that he could not continue competing. The Australian was disqualified for contact, which meant that Aidan was put through to the next round. Unable to compete, Aidan had to forfeit that match, which put him in bronze position. This outcome was unlucky as Aidan was looking in good form, and had high potential of winning the division.

Jade also had tough competition, with six other competitions in her division on the Friday. First round Jade beat the opponent from Naru 5-0, next round beat New Caledonia 4-0, which put her in the final later that day. In the final Jade came up against her club mate from New Zealand who she has never beaten before, and managed to come away with a 4-0 match, making her the gold medallist and Oceania Champion for her age / weight division. This win has been a long time coming, and we are very proud that Jade won the match.

Being top seed for the New Zealand Junior females meant that Jade was also put in the team fights. The girls had a straight final against Australia. The first competitor lost 11-3 which meant she needed to win to even have a chance of the team continuing. Jade managed to beat her competitor 6-1, and unfortunately the last girl lost as she drew 2-2, but the Australian had first point advantage, meaning that she won the match. As New Zealand only won one out of three matches they lost the final, placing second.

Overall this was a good tournament, and they are both very happy with the results (aside from the concussion) and hope to continue the winning streak for the rest of the year.

NZ Race Walk Clinic Thomas Logopati attended the Athletics NZ Race Walkers clinic in Wellington with his coach Rozie Robinson and two team members. On Saturday they had workshops with Quentin Rew, NZ Commonwealth games representative.

On Sunday they participated in a team relay. The Canterbury juniors brought home the trophy and some really good times too. They each walked 2x 1.25km legs. Thomas had the two fastest leg times overall at 7:19 and 7:15mins. Canterbury Scholastic Surf Champs

The Canterbury Scholastic Surf Champs were held at New Brighton pier on Sunday 20 May. Congratulations to Jai Tudor Oakley (Yr 10) who competed in the championships and shot out to an early lead in the U14 Boys’ grade with two great waves in the open minutes to win comfortably. This event is the trial for the Canterbury Scholastic Surf Team, a training squad will be announced before the 10th June, in preparation for the National Scholastic Surf Champs in Gisborne in October.
