Dear Readers,
We are especially proud of this month’s edition of Panache E-Magazine., because along with all of our usual fabulous, interesting and informative features we have the enormous pleasure in featuring the crowning of the very first Miss Caribbean UK Queen.
Clayton & Jacqui Brown, the organisers of the Miss Caribbean UK pageant had this to say about the reasons behind the concept. “We wanted the Miss Caribbean UK beauty pageant to provide a platform for the UK’s Caribbean ladies to demonstrate and display their beauty and intellect to the Caribbean community and the World.
The pageant was created to inspire by example; those who feel disadvantaged and to empower them by showing them that, beauty is more than outward appearance.
The nature of Miss Caribbean UK is ‘all-inclusive’; and it is our intention to include all Caribbean countries if possible.
Our intention is to ensure that this event is put “on the map” correctly and includes the whole Caribbean community, both here in the UK and in the diaspora. This is more than just a pageant to us, it is a means to unite around a common cause.
We recognised that although some of the Caribbean countries currently organise their own individual countries’ pageant, e.g. Miss Jamaica UK; Miss Trinidad and Tobago UK; Miss St Lucia and Miss Guyana UK, there was no “finale” to showcase the ultimate Caribbean UK beauty, such as the “Miss World” contest.

We hoped that The Miss Caribbean UK Pageant 2014 would act as a vehicle for the people of Caribbean and the Diaspora to unite around a common purpose; which was; to choose their Queen to represent them to the World. However, through this unity, we hope a message will be enveloped, which will be to raise awareness of not only the beauty and vibrancy of the peoples and the region, but also to highlight issues that are affecting the aforementioned community and try to affect positive change to those issues.
To this end we were delighted to present the “Miss Caribbean UK 2014.“ pageant
We have learned a massive amount from the experience and are eagerly looking forward to MCUK 2105, when we will have the opportunity to use what we have learned to improve on what is, as we have been told, already a fantastic production.”Please enjoy the pictures and feature on pages……………….

EndorsementsLivingston Gilchrist I CARE... that’s why I SHARE!I had the pleasure & privilege of Presenting the inaugural Miss Caribbean UK Beauty Pageant yesterday. The calibre of MCUK contestants was of the highest order. Intelligence, beauty and poise made judging this competition rather difficult for the judges but their final decision was spot-on. CONGRATULATIONS to Miss Keeleigh Griffith and WELL DONE to ALL participants, performers and the Panache Occasions team. JB, CB, RPJ... you guys are AWESOME!LG
Tony Urbansmash AndrewsThank you for organising such a positive event. I can’t imagine the challenges & stresses you faced, and yet it was an overall rousing success.
DerrickJacqui, Congratulations on a fantastic event, to you, Clayton and the entire team. To say how amazing the event was and how it exceeded everyone’s expectations would be an euphemism. It was simply beautiful and classy. As I know you are resting(indeed deserved), I just wanted to congratulate you. Don’t be a stranger and let’s keep talking.

Once again, we would like to thank everyone who put their energies into making Miss Caribbean UK 2014 a fabulous success!
Coral ConciousleeeOn Sunday 30th November 2014, the first Miss Caribbean UK was held at The Tabernacle, West London.
Like most of us, I have never really regarded beauty pageants as anything serious - surely it was just some pretty smiling girls walking down a catwalk right? WRONG!!
Sunday was a culmination of months of phone call, letters, emails, preparation, rehearsals, castings, routines, choreography, sponsors and, of course, the pretty smiling girls. For me it was a whole learning experience of just what it takes to host such an event from start to finish. Planning was easy enough, but then came the inclusion of other individuals to make sure the plans came to fruition.
My first salutation goes to Reuben P Joseph, award-winning choreographer whose range, creativity and vivid imagination spawned the most colourful and inspiring show I have ever seen. I saw him in rehearsals and each week, I was completely blown away by his tenacity, attention to detail and his patience when
dealing with the contestants and models. Jacqui Brown and Clayton Brown taught me how to conduct each word and action with dignity, graciousness and elegance. My respect for them is not just in word, together they are a formidable force in the Events world.
Through this event, I have made new contacts and friends, the suits, dresses, costumes and swimsuits provided by the sponsors for the event were of the highest standard and style, everything exuded glamour and class.
In conclusion Miss Caribbean UK was not just about pretty smiling girls, it was about realising the different talents, skills and abilities, making those qualities shine in an awe-inspiring show which had me gasping at the sheer brilliance of it all. About those pretty smiling girls....they too have aspirations and dreams which they want to realise in the coming years and I believe Sunday they were given a platform to lay that foundation. Keeleigh I congratulate you on encapsulating all our time, effort, skills and abilities, by walking down that aisle like the queen that you are!
Roll on next year......

What is your name?Keeleigh Griffith.
Where were you born?North London.
What is your family connection to the Caribbean? My grandparents are Barbadians.
Have you ever visited Barbados? Many times.
What are your views of the island?Beautiful! I’ve been going there with my grandparents since I was three years old and love the island.
Are you working or studying at the moment?I work as an Administration Officer at a university and am also taking a degree course in International Business Management.
What prompted you to enter the Miss Caribbean UK 2014 pageant?I am proud of my heritage and culture so the competition appealed to me. I am also at a stage in my life where I believe in myself and as this was the first ever Miss Caribbean UK thought why not just do it. Was this your first beauty pageant?Yes, it was. I have watched them on TV but have never, ever entered one before.
What does your family think about you winning the pageant? My family are so proud of me. My Mum is over the moon and my Granddad is overjoyed. I am very close to my Granddad so to see his face on the night made me glad that I had entered the competition. He hasn’t stopped smiling.
Who accompanied you to the pageant? My Mum and my Granddad.
Do you intend to enter future pageants? After doing this pageant, I don’t see why not. I didn’t think that I would be able to do it and now that I know what it is all about, I would love the opportunity to do it again.
What are your three main ambitions for the next few years?I would like to set up a community organisation to provide training opportunities to youngsters to help them gain employment.
I would also like to provide a place for young people to go where they won’t be harassed and can be safe. Another ambition of mine is to one day own a successful business in Barbados.
Who has had the greatest influence in your life to date?My Mum and my grandparents. They have made me the person that I am today by guiding and helping me to understand that I need to be confident, knowledgeable, dedicated, driven and ambitious in order to get on and be successful in my life. They taught me that there is nothing that I cannot do once I put my mind and heart to it.
Have you any advice for other young people who have dreams?I would say don’t stop until you get there.

Never, ever, ever, ever give up. Any young person who wants to follow their dreams shouldn’t let anyone get in their way, try to put them down or discourage them.
Is there anything else you would like to say about Miss Caribbean UK 2014?I would like to thank Mr AgyeFrance for the beautiful evening dress – an amazing creation! I would also like to thank the choreographer, Mr Reuben P Joseph, who is a unique and
artistic individual. And last but not least, I would like to thank and praise Jacqui and Clayton Brown, the organisers, for pulling off such a spectacular event that gave young Caribbean women a platform to help us boost our confidence.
Do you have a final word for the benefit of readers?I would simply say follow your dreams.

Living Life
Watching America from
the outsideby Kieran Etoria-King
As an Englishman, I feel a strange mix of smug superiority, pitiful sadness and frothing frustration when
viewing current events in America.
Specifically, anything to do with their gun culture sets all three reactions in equal motion. Every other week I find myself kissing my teeth in exasperation at another mass shooting, while sitting comfortably in a country that has seen a handful in decades. And in the weeks in between I shake my head in disgust at the conveyor belt of killings by police, knowing that the UK has had just 16 in the 20 years I’ve been on Earth.
I barely had time to form an informed opinion on the acquittal of Officer Darren Wilson, who shot Mike Brown in Ferguson, before a 12-year-old black boy was shot dead in Detroit while carrying a BB gun.
As a young black male, it’s impossible to ignore the pangs of empathy – of that could be me or someone I know - even from halfway around the world. These issues – and individual incidents – are all very emotive, and very complicated, to the point that like all emotive and complicated issues, they become shouting matches. The racial politics will be talked to death, and I’m far from the social genius who will provide the answer, so I’m not going to try.
But I found that when reading the transcript of Wilson’s account of the Mike Brown incident, even taking his version of events as the truth, I couldn’t see any way that he didn’t escalate the situation beyond what was necessary.
To give you the TL;DR version, Wilson claims that Brown, who was much larger than him, punched him repeatedly through the open window of his police car, and blocked him from getting out. Outsized and overpowered, he drew his gun, only for Brown to put his hands on it, prompting a wrestling match that resulted in two errant shots being fired from inside the car. Brown supposedly backed off, then charged at Wilson like a “demon” when he got out of the car. Wilson says he didn’t count how

Living Life
many shots he fired or how many hit their target, but in the end the teenager was dead.
The main part of that I take issue with is, and forgive for me not being used to driving around with a deadly weapon, that if I was sat at the wheel of a car and the person attacking me was outside that car, the first thing I would do is move the car. Wilson is a cop so he can’t just run away, but it strikes me as odd that he wouldn’t just move the car back or forwards so he could open the door and get out. He said Brown reached for his gun, but my impression is that Wilson didn’t need to bring it into the equation yet. At the very best, Mike Brown’s death was caused by panic and incompetence, not to mention the others who could have been hurt by the indeterminate number of stray bullets. And that’s assuming I completely believe Darren Wilson, which I don’t.
At this point, looking from the outside, I have to start thinking about the differences between UK and US culture to really understand context. It’s estimated that there are between 270-310 million civilian held guns in the USA – roughly one for every single person in the country. Meanwhile, gunpolicy.org estimates there are around 4 million guns held by civilians in the UK – about 6.7 per 100 people. Immediately there’s a huge difference – most people here can go years without even seeing a real gun. The USA has more guns per capita than active war zones including Iraq, Somalia and Libya.
Recently I’ve been thinking about the implications of this, and one is that enforcing the law would be f***** scary. That doesn’t mitigate the aforementioned actions of
Darren Wilson, but it does put into context the legitimate mortal fear that police men and women must feel when on the job.
The number of civilians killed by police in America is atrocious, but click on this link http://newsetcblog.wordpress.com/2014/11/26/watching-america-from-the-outside/ to have a look at the list of police personnel – at least some of whom must have been honest, good people – killed in the line of duty in 2014 alone. Then consider what is the only other environment where men in uniform are killed this regularly. (see appendix 1)
These deaths might hold no correlation to the communities that find themselves on the receiving end of police brutality, but the list does illustrate how the spectre of death hangs over every member of the American police force each day. That would give anyone an itchy trigger finger, and for those on the spectrum between prejudiced incompetence and all-out racial hate, it also provides a perfect excuse.
Standing outside America, I don’t just see Ferguson as the latest in a string of incidents, and I don’t see it as the one that will provoke change. I see the latest flare-up in a country that’s been fighting a war of attrition for decades.

Living Caribbean Property
St. Lucia Property
Procedures: The Need for
Change
Named Saint Lucy of Syracuse by the island’s first European settlers (the French), St. Lucia is without doubt a
stunningly beautiful Caribbean island. It is therefore sad that the same cannot be said of the experience for overseas residents buying or selling property on this stunningly beautiful island. Let’s examine some of the procedures involved with buying or selling property in St. Lucia to understand why this is so.
Alien Landholding Licence (ALL)Non-nationals wishing to buy property in St. Lucia are required to obtain an Alien Landholding Licence from the Government. This is a permanent licence that does not require renewal, is granted for a specific plot of land or property and is not transferable. The
primary difficulty here is the length of time it takes for an ALL application to be processed. Removing the need for an ALL application to pass from one Government department to another and then another and then another would see applications being processed more expeditiously.
Signing documentsIt is the requirement for vendors and purchasers of property in St. Lucia to be on St. Lucian soil in order to sign the legal document used to formally transfer property from one party to another (i.e. the Conveyance Deed). Where it is not possible for vendors and purchasers to travel, they must appoint someone in St. Lucia to deal with the signing of this document on their behalf under a Power of Attorney. This is not necessary in a day and age when there are persons who are qualified to witness signatures to international documents.
Notarising legal documentsHaving received the Power of Attorney (referred to above) that will have been prepared by your attorney on your behalf, you will be required to sign the document in the presence of a Notary Public. However,

Living Caribbean Property
unlike other Caribbean islands, you cannot then return the signed/notarised document to your attorney, but will instead have to go through another process before doing so.
The ApostilleOnce the Power of Attorney has been signed/notarised, an apostille is required to certify the authenticity of the person who notarised the document. It is only after this has been obtained that the document can then be returned to your attorney via courier service (advisable) as you will have paid fees to get it notarised and for the apostille. With Notaries being legally qualified to witness international documents, is there still a need for St. Lucia to require an apostille? Probably not, but they do!
Payment of monies between attorneysThe transfer of funds between attorneys in St. Lucia is still undertaken by way of cheques, where the use of wire transfers would lead to speedier transactions.
Procedures for sellers and buyers dealing with property transactions in St. Lucia need to be overhauled to not only bring them
into the 21st century, but also to make a process that is renowned for being stressful at the best of times (i.e. buying and selling property) less costly, tedious, frustrating and protracted. If much needed changes were implemented, this would undoubtedly make St. Lucia more appealing to property investors.

HUNDREDS of Africans in the UK gathered to celebrate the end of the year yesterday at Kensington
Town Hall in London last night in a gala dinner set alight with a live performance from legendary signer Bunny Mack who sang a rendition of his My Sweetie My Lover.
Dubbed the African Party, the event was organised by Nigerian Watch in conjunction with Women4Africa as a Christmas get-together for the African community in the UK. Laced with live performances, stand-up comedy, music from a live band and jokes from the Mcs Lolo and MC Mark, the dinner attracted the who-is-who across the spectrum.
Among the guests were the mayor of Lambeth Councillor Adedamola Aminu and the former mayors of Enfield, Hackney and Waltham Forest Kate Anolue, Susan Fajana-Thomas and Anna Mbachu. Ministers Cyril Gwan and Simon Ogar from the Nigerian high commission in London also attended, as did other eminent Nigerians like Chief Bimbo Afolayan, the chairman of the Central Association of Nigerians in the UK and Chief Adebayo Oladimeji, the chairman of the Nigerian Elders Forum.
Nigerian Watch managing director Tevin Jemide, said: "Given the growing strength of our community, it is time for us to get together and pool our collective resources. Africans in the UK today are now a strong and upwardly mobile collective and it is time we tapped into that potential for our collective benefit."
Sam Onigbanjo, the Women4Africa director, added: "It is estimated that black people in the UK generate about £10bn for the economy but only about 4% of that wealth stays within the community. We decided to organise this event to enable us network and do business with one another, so we feed off each other's success."
In the programme's notes, Dr Dalhatu Tafida, the Nigerian high commissioner to the UK and Ambassador Edward Turay, the Sierra Leonean high commissioner to the UK, both wrote goodwill messages. They urged the community to pull together and use their industrious nature to overcome their numerous challenges it faced both at home and in the diaspora.

Random Missing Pieces
by James Balogun
‘No point looking back on chances that are gone’
The Klub International Management Company was introduced to James Balogun well over a year ago, after playing
with ideas on how best to get his Brand and services to the attention of the general public so that they can witness what this majestic man can do.
“Random Missing Pieces!” is the true life story of a professional young man who has been on, and continues to go on (as we all do) the rocky road of what we call “life”. James Balogun is a successful Interior Designer for both residential and commercial sectors with his own company SENTRIC DESIGNS. Now, aged 32 years, he is able to share his experience of the trauma of losing his mother at the tender age of 5, being passed around to relatives where he suffered terrible abuse and then finally being abandoned, by those he trusted. He went on to encounter and survive, the things many of us fear the most, which is being without a home and living on the streets of a town or city, in James’s case, it was London, England.
James’s diary entries are in black italic, they have been copied directly from his handwritten
records, with very little amendments, this action is deliberate.
You will find yourself willing him, championing him to come through, you will also share, his emotional roller coaster. James has allowed you to come into his world of “Random Missing Pieces!” A world in which many of us will be able to identify with him, albeit, from our differing journeys of life.
Whether it’s understanding his struggle to sustain his relationships, his desire to succeed as an entrepreneur or just to be a good parent.
‘Is my life perfect? No. I have learned that to wait for the “perfect” moment is a waste of time!’
The man himself James Balogun

Horoscope for December 2014
In the first half of the month, your plans will have the wind in
their sails, with the support of your friends and an
inspiring love-life? The climate will then take a dive from the 15th, when Uranus and Pluto, who have been up to their old tricks since 2012, will be back in square aspect and therefore on the warpath. This could well spell trouble and even wreak havoc
throughout the world, in our country and in
our lives, near and far! It will be an end to the
year to create sparks and we would do well to handle this
as well as we can in the greatest possible awareness, so that we can
complete this cycle smoothly rather than painfully!

“Alright,” says the cop, “then you’re going to have to take a blood test.” “Can’t do that either,” Jim responds, “I am a haemophiliac, if a wound is opened, I won’t stop bleeding, and I could bleed to death.”
