Lost in the mistsof time, stories of devils andwitches, of damned souls ofmermaids donating laces asan award for a love withoutrepentance thus emerge fromthe waters of the lagoon.Stories of Saints and of simplehuman beings who ‘live on’the magic dominating Venice.The waters of the lagoon havewitnessed people escapingfrom the horde of barbarians,the galleys of the SerenissimaRepublic, the boats fromByzantium and those of theentire known world. Storiesof world-famous characterswhich have left behind aninvisible, yet indelible markin the places they had visitedin the past. Three years laterit was the turn of a veryyoung Rodolfo Valentino –student of the nautical insti-tute of the city – to steal a tugboat during the night of theRedentore, to founder a gon-dola and save an Englishinheritress who offered himin exchange a week of love inthe Hotel Excelsior in theVenice island of Lido. The initiation of the “The sonof the sheik” into the pleasu-res of the flesh took place inthe Venice lagoon. Theislands of the Venetian es-tuary – behind lace veils andglass transparencies – hideeven more mysterious storieslike the one of Ida Dalzerwho bore Benito Mussolini ason. Her body rests in a com-mon grave in the island ofSan Clemente – today a for-mer mental hospital transfor-med into a top class hotel –where the Duce confined her.It was Ida Dazler herself who

He was nicknamed �Bepi del Giasso�� Bepi �of ice� � but his real namewas Josif Stalin, the Russian dictator-to-be. He was one of the last bell-ringers of the island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni.

At an early age Benito Mussolini had a child from Ida Dalzer. He sent herin the mental hospital of the island of San Clemente which today is aluxury hotel. Ida Valzer�s remains have been found in a common gravewhich was situated in this area.

Giacomo Casanovacertainly cannot fail to bementioned. Indeed, it was inthe lagoon waters, in theisland of Murano, that heexperienced a magic story: thefirst conscious memory of hisadventurous life. He wastaken by his grand motherMarzia to the house of abewitcher to be cured of fre-quent nosebleeds. Duringthat very night, the youngCasanova had the vision of avery sweet lady coming outfrom the fireplace and addres-sing him gently. Also Casanova encountered awoman in the lagoon for thefirst time. The last extraordi-nary story to be told is onewhich took place behind thewalls of the convent-island ofSan Giorgio Maggiore duringthe winter at the turn of1900: the only conclavewhich ever took place awayfrom Rome. Pio VI – Gio-vanni Angelo Brasca comingfrom the Emilia Romagnaregion – had died during hisexile in Valences after theconfiscation of ecclesial pro-perty and after having beendeported by Napoleon Bona-parte. Before dying he affir-med that the elections of hissuccessor could not take placein the Cappella Sistina. The Venetian BenedictineMonastery had then be propo-sed, but consultations on thissolution went on for over twomonths and in the end theysaw Barnaba Chiaramonti –from Imola – ascending thepapal throne as Pio VII. Afew years later, it was himwho was to assist the sinisterself-coronation of Napoleonas imperator in the Pariscathedral of Notre Dame.

Hewrote three books on the secret, curious and mysterious sideof Venice: �Venetian legends and ghost stories�, �Venice-enigma� and �Mysteries of the lagoon and witch tales�,which include the stories that can be read in our magazine.The books are published by Elzeviro and have been transla-ted into various languages. Rodolfo Valentino, student of the nautical institute of the city, saved an Englishinheritress who offered him in exchange a week of love in the Hotel Excelsior inthe Venice island of Lido. That was the initiation of the future �son of the sheik�.

Giacomo Casanova � pictured here in one of the latest films dedicatedto his character � experienced a magic story in the island of Murano:the first conscious memory of his adventurous life.

July 1st, 1873 saw the opening of a female mental house in the island ofSan Clemente � in the picture. In 1904 the two mental houses of SanServolo and of San Clemente were reunited under the �Opera pia mani-comi centrali veneti� which administered them until 1932, i.e. when it wasreplaced by the Amministrazione provinciale (provincial administration)of Venice. The laws number 180 and number 833 of 24th December 1978decreed the institution of the National Health Service and the abolition ofmental houses. As a consequence, the mental house of San Servolo clo-sed in 1978 and the one of San Clemente in 1980.

HIDALGOS ON SHOWThe world-famous fight against the windmills which is today a reallegend; the strenuous chivalrous feats performed for the sake ofDulcinea del Toboso; a horse responding to the bizarre name ofRonzinante and a loyal esquire and companion, in the period ofSancho Panza. All this should be enough to recall the extraordi-nary character which has become part of the collective publicimagination: Don Quixote of la Mancha, the odd idealist cham-pion created by the ingenious mind of Miguel de Cervantes. 2005sees the fourth anniversary of the publishing of the first part of thenovel. On this occasion, the Biblioteca Marciana has organized�Quixote/Chisciotte. 1605-2005�. The exhibition, which can beviewed until 18th January 2006, presents Spanish editions of the�Don Quixote�, translations, works and outstanding critical stu-dies � preserved in the Venetian libraries � in which this extraor-dinary character is the protagonist and object of study.

Born in 1990 from the collaboration between Massimiliano Bugno andDavide Samueli, the Bugno Art Gallery can be found in the main gal-lery space situated in Campo S. Fantin (a few hundred meters fromPiazza San Marco and exactly in front of la Fenice theater). Since 1990,works by major contemporary artists both Italian and international havebeen shown giving space at the same time also to new artistic reality.

It is a building of very ancient origin (traditio-nally the ninth century) which underwentmany restorations during the passage of timeuntil it was completely rebuilt in 1680.Conceived by Giuseppe Sardi independentlyof the interior, it is an obvious example of a�commemorative façade� and is one of themost original and most lavish VenetianBaroque works. As a whole it is a mightymonument to the Barbaro family, which isrepresented by the effigies of five brothersand the representation of the places in whichAntonio Barbaro, a skilful war leader, servedthe Venetian Republic. Sardi portrayed the

Barbaro brothers on the façade instead of saints and cherubim, with the plans of the citiesin which they won military honours. Inside, works by Jacopo Tintoretto and of great interestare the canvas by Peter Paul Rubens portraying the Madonna con Bambino e SanGiovannino (�Madonna with Child and the Young Saint John the Baptist�), the only paintingin Venice by the flemish artist.

E� un edificio di origine molto antica (tradizionalmente si fa risalire al IX secolo) chenel corso dei secoli ha subito numerosi interventi di restauro, fino ad essere com-pletamente riedificato nel 1680. Concepita indipendentemente dall�impianto inter-no da Giuseppe Sardi, rappresenta un esempio clamoroso di "facciata commemo-rativa" ed è una delle più originali e fastose opere barocche veneziane. Nel suoinsieme risulta un grandioso monumento alla famiglia Barbaro, rappresentata dalleeffigi di cinque fratelli e dalla raffigurazione dei luoghi in cui svolse la sua attivitàper la Repubblica veneziana Antonio Barbaro, valente condottiero. Sulla facciata,al posto di santi e cherubini, Sardi ha raffigurato i fratelli Barbaro e le piante dellecittà nelle quali si erano distinti militarmente. It is one of the most beautiful Venetian-Byzantine buildings of the 12th century.The exterior of the hexagonal apse isvery interesting, both for its architecturalbeauty and the wealth of its decorativeelements. The church of the Jesuits was builtbetween 1726 and 1735, it was com-missioned by Dominicans, after theytook the place of the Jesuits, in order toreplace the small church that still standsbeside it. Giorgio Massari was the authorof the church’s design and of the internaldecoration, assisted by two great artistsof the period: Giambattista Tiepolo andGianmaria Morlaiter. The interior, withits single nave, side chapels and a deeppresbytery, is beautifully balanced. To see: the altarpiece and the ceiling byG.B. He designed a templehaving a central area on an octagonalplan, dominated by a huge domewith great arches. Some ofthem, like the octagon of the Alberoni, are ancient military areas,others are stretches of emerged land rich in history and fascination.The island of Tessera, an ancient military post defending thelagoon from the mainland, has been for sale for a long time and isstill available. Situated between the ancient island of glass –Murano – and the Venice international airport, the island ofTessera experienced deep transformations since the end of eigh-teenth century. The island unveils a marvellous garden, a smallchapel and an extraordinary nineteenth-century villa last restoredin 1985 and for sale at the price of 6 million euros. The Octagonof the Alberoni can be bought for 4 million 132 thousand euros.Built in 1570, it was one of the eight military octagons of thelagoon: 2500 square metres of garden hidden behind walls andwithin it a marvellous residence. The island of Sant’Antonio, closeto the beautiful Torcello, is also available on the market. Seven anda half acres of garden and a lodge completed in 1989 that can hostup to twenty people. L’isolaè rimasta tranquilla, a misura d’uomo. Silenziosa d’invernoquanto in estate. Ad un’anima popolare e popolana, che ancorac’è, si sono aggiunte altre anime. Quelle dell’intellighentia cultu-rale, degli artisti, dei letterati, delle classi alte e raffinate. Qui ilturista arriva poco. Una volta, lungo le fondamenta sul tormen-tato Canale della Giudecca, passeggiava Gabriele D’annunzio,Filippo Tommaso Martinetti, Luigi Nono, Francois Mitterand.Oggi si vedono attori che con calma trascorrono le loro giornateal sole sotto la pergola del Cipriani. Senza preoccuparsi di guar-die del corpo e fastidiosi ammiratori.

Da sempre con il Natale i ricordi si avvolgono nei piaceri scopertidurante l’infanzia, in un periodo della vita dove sacro e profanonon hanno significato e le emozioni sono le uniche sensazioni

dei bambini. Si può dimenticare il risotto “de pevarasse” o i “bigoi insalsa” della vigilia di Natale? Quale stretta al cuore mi coglie al ricordodel branzino bollito. Aspettando la mezzanotte il cucchiaio di frittura eraun obbligo prima di aprire gli attesi regali. Poi, il giorno di Natale, dopola messa, rientrati a casa si poteva toccare nell’aria il profumo di cappo-ne in brodo, o quello della “bondiola” col purè di patate. Personalmenteimpazzivo per i ravioli in brodo. Ecco di seguito una ricetta che utilizzaun pesce la cui denominazione vale per tutto l’alto Adriatico : la “scar-pena”. Se in italiano con dispregio è detta “scorfano” (sinonimo di brut-tezza) nel contempo ha una polpa così delicata che risulta protagonista dibrodi eccellenti. Da ciò è anche detto “pesce Cappone”.In questo giocodi parole e definizioni ecco a voi i ravioli di Scarpena in spuma di cap-pone e funghi “piopparoi”. Buon appetito e felice Natale.

LA RICETTA

Capon mousse: Season the scarpena flesh with salt and pepper and cover with coldcapon broth. Bring to boiling-point, take away from the flame, add garlic and liquidi-ze the whole. Enrich with cream and butter, boil once again, if necessary add morebroth. Season with nutmeg and truffle oil.Scarpena filling: Chop the prunes and mix the scarpena flesh with all the other ingre-dients. Prepare the ravioli as usual and fill with the scarpena meat.To be served in a soup-plate. Place a spoon of piopparelli mushrooms previouslysauté with oil and garlic at the centre of the plate. Cook the ravioli, strain themand place them onto the mushrooms. Abundantly pour the scarpena mousse anddecorate with black truffle.

Esecuzione spuma di cappone: Insaporire la polpa di scarpena con sale e pepe e coprirla conil brodo freddo di cappone, portare a bollore, togliere dal fuoco aggiungere l'aglio e frullare.Arricchire con panna e burro, portare nuovamente a bollore, aggiustare se necessario conaltro brodo. Condire con noce moscata ed olio al tartufo. Esecuzione ripieno di scarpena: Tritare le prugne e amalgamare la polpa di scar-pena con tutti gli altri ingredienti. Preparare i ravioli come di consueto utilizzandoil ripieno di scarpena.Come servire: In un piatto fondo mettere al centro un cucchiaio di funghi pioppa-roi saltati in padella con aglio ed olio. Cuocere i ravioli, scolarli e porli sopra ai fun-ghi. Versare abbondante spuma di scarpena e decorare con tartufo nero.

SCENT OFCHRISTMAS

Christmas always has the power of evoking pleasures discovered

during childhood. A period of life when sacred and profane haveno meaning and emotions are the children’s only feelings. The

extraordinary taste of the risotto “de pevarasse”, of the “bigoi in salsa”usually eaten on Christmas Eve and of the boiled sea-bass arouse unfor-gettable feelings. Tradition has it that, while awaiting midnight, a bit of“frittura” had to be eaten before unwrapping Christmas gifts. On theChristmas day , returning home from mass, one could smell in the air thearoma of the capon cooked with broth or of the “bondiola” (typical saltedmeat of the Val d’Aosta region) with mashed potatoes. I personally lovedthe broth of “ravioli”. Here is the recipe of a fish known almost everywhe-re in the North of Italy as “scarpena”. It’s proper name, “scorfano”, issynonymous of ugliness and certainly does not do justice to the delicatetaste of its flesh which is used in numerous excellent soup recipes. Andnow the extraordinary recipe of “Ravioli of scarpena with capon mousseand ‘piopparelli’ mushrooms”. Bon appetite and Merry Christmas.

Ippolito Caffi (1809-1966) is a romanticartist and a character endowed with a great charm. He isone of the major and most original artists of the Italian 1800Vedutist movement. His art takes on a European dimension ina way that is very much close to Corot, and somehow to thecontemporary Turner �for the different and at the same timecontiguous visionary attitudes� which enabled him to obtain,in his short but intense life, consensus and admiration.

Curiosity

150 work in a route shifting from the impact and the artists of the Serenissima Republic to the ones of thecontiguous Ducato Estense, dating back to a period going from the XV and XVIII century. The exhibition canbe viewed at the �Palazzo Revoltella�, in the neoclassical Church of San Francesco � containing numerousworks of the Ferrarese school � and in the Chiesa dela Beata Vergine del Soccorso � also known as the �LaRotonda� � entirely covered with Venetian �teleri� (i.e. large pictorial compositions on canvas used for muraldecorations). An itinerary giving visitors the opportunity to view altar pieces, frescos, paintings that enrichmonasteries, convents, parishes, villas and palaces of a silent and hidden �Land between two rivers�.

Un preciso percorso (oltre 150 opere) che rimbalza tra l�influenza (e gli artisti) della Serenissima Repubblicae quelli del contiguo Ducato Estense, lungo un ampio arco di tempo, dal XV al XVIII secolo. Oltre a PalazzoRovella la mostra continua in due sedi cittadine: la neoclassica chiesa di San Francesco, ricchissima dicapolavori di scuola ferrarese, e la Chiesa della Beata Vergine del Soccorso, conosciuta come �LaRotonda�, interamente rivestita da teleri veneziani. Da qui, un itinerario che consentirà a chi vorràapprofondire il raggiungere pale d�altare, affreschi, tele che arricchiscono monasteri, conventi, parroc-chiali, ville e palazzi di questa silenziosa e nascosta �Terra tra i due Fiumi�.

40 projects documenting 20 years of international success of �David Chipperfield Architects�, i.e. one of themost renowned architecture studios in the world. The exhibition organised by the David ChipperfieldArchitects can be viewed at the �Salone del Palazzo della Regione� of Padua � one of Europe�s largest fre-scoed halls. The aim is to present the project in a simple and homogeneous way with drawings-paintingsand miniatures-sculptures, placing particular emphasis on shape and space. The exhibition will see thedisplay of projects in small and large scales which are being realized in Europe, America and the East.

La mostra sarà allestita dalla David ChipperfieldArchitects presso lo spazio scenografico del Salone del Palazzo della Ragione di Padova, fra i più grandiinterni affrescati medioevali d�Europa. L�idea principale è rappresentare in maniera semplice ed omoge-nea i progetti attraverso disegni-pitture e plastici-sculture, ponendo particolare attenzione a forma e spa-zio. La mostra vedrà esposti progetti dalla piccola alla grande scala in corso di realizzazione in Europa,America ed Oriente.

With this exhibition and the wide-ranging catalogue linked to it, the Civici Musei of Padua complete thescientific study of around 3000 drawings that, together with over twenty thousand works, form one of thetreasures of the Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe of the Art Museum. The exhibition is mostly centredon works from the XIX and XX century, and many of them are displayed for the first time. The nineteenthcentury collection is particularly rich and is provided with an in-depth documentation of the works of themost outstanding decorators of the Padua of that time, such as Giovanni De Min (1786-1859), VincenzoGazzotto (1807-1884), Ippolito Caffi (1809-1886), Augusto Caratti (1828-1900), Cesare Laurenti (1854-1936)protagonist of liberty art in Padua, over one hundred and eighty drawings by Tono Zancanaro from Padua.

Con questa mostra e l�amplissimo catalogo ad essa collegato, i Civici Musei di Padova completano la ricogni-zione scientifica dei circa 3000 disegni che, con le oltre ventimila stampe, costituiscono uno dei tesori delGabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe del Museo d'Arte. La mostra punta alle opere del XIX e XX secolo racco-gliendo lavori quasi totalmente inediti. Particolarmente ricca è la raccolta ottocentesca con ampia documen-tazione dei lavori dei più illustri decoratori della Padova dell�epoca, quali Giovanni De Min (1786-1859), VincenzoGazzotto (1807-1884), Ippolito Caffi (1809-1886), Augusto Caratti (1828-1900). December 2005 and the first quarter of2006 will be rich in events that will betaking place in the structures managed byVenezia Terminal Passegeri S.p.A. Thepassenger terminals 107/108 and 103 –conceived as polyfunctional areas – areavant-garde cruise stations. Yet, they canalso host conventions and various differentevents all the year round and during win-ter large fairs. The Terminal 103 hosts amodern conference centre whereas in win-ter the Terminal 107/108 is usually used asfair pavilion.

December 2005 will see the first openingin Venice of the ‘International FelineExhibition’ (17-18 December) with thepresence of numerous unknown and rarebreeds coming from all over the world. Itwill then be the turn of ‘Expo Premium’in January 2006 dedicated to various typesof items – for prize-giving, advertising,gifts – as well as all types of equipmentsfor personalizing any kind of area. Thefirst edition of ‘Venezia Sposi’ – fair dedi-cated to weddings, brides and bride-grooms – will take place on 28-29 Januaryat Terminal 108.

The second Venetian edition of ‘VenezieModa & Sport’ will take place on 5February 2006 at the Terminal 103 and itwill be presented as a true convention-exhi-bition rich in initiatives. The first edition of‘Antiquari a Venezia’ – 11-19 February2006, Terminal 108 – will exhibit the bestnational antiques. The BICA – the Inter-national Exhibition on EnvironmentalCommunication – can be viewed on 16-17February 2006, Terminal 103.

March 2006 will see the opening of thefifth edition of the prestigious ‘VeniceInternational Boat Show’ – 11-19 March2006 – occupying the entire harbour areawith a wealth of new events and initiatives.The fair season will end up with‘Dietetica’ – 5-7 April 2006 – exhibitionon functional and dietetic nutrition.

La fine del 2005 e l’inizio del 2006 si preannuncia-no ricchi di eventi per le strutture gestite dallaVenezia Terminal Passeggeri S.p.A. Concepiticome spazi polifunzionali, i Terminal Passeggeri107/108 e 103 sono stazioni crociere all’avanguar-dia e al contempo sono in grado di ospitare conve-gni ed eventi di varia natura durante tutto l’arcodell’anno e, nei periodi invernali, rassegne fieristi-che anche di notevoli dimensioni. In particolare ilTerminal 103 ospita un moderno centro congressimentre il Terminal 107/108 viene utilizzato, fuoristagione crocieristica, come padiglione fieristico.

Il mese di dicembre 2005 vedrà per la prima volta aVenezia l’apertura della Mostra Felina Inter-nazionale (17-18 dicembre 2005-Terminal 108) conla presenza di razze sconosciute e rare provenientida tutto il mondo, seguirà a gennaio 2006 ExpoPremium (21-23 gennaio 2006-Terminal 108),manifestazione fieristica dedicata agli articoli per lapremiazione, la promozione, l'oggettistica da regalononché le attrezzature per la personalizzazione diogni superficie e quindi la prima edizione di VeneziaSposi (28-29 gennaio 2006-Terminal 108), la fieradedicata alla più classica delle cerimonie.

Febbraio 2006 vedrà la seconda edizione venezia-na di Venezie Moda & Sport (5 febbraio 2006-Terminal 103), che cambia volto da fiera a mostraconvegno ricca di iniziative, la prima edizione diAntiquari a Venezia (11-19 febbraio 2006-Terminal 108) che proporrà il meglio dell'antiqua-riato nazionale con ricchissime esposizioni dioggetti e rarità dei secoli scorsi, infine BICA,Biennale Internazionale di ComunicazioneAmbientale (16-17 febbraio 2006-Terminal 103).

A marzo sarà protagonista il prestigioso VSalone Nautico Internazionale di Venezia (11-19 marzo 2006) sempre più ricco di eventi ediniziative che occuperà l’intera area portuale. Lastagione fieristica si concluderà infine ad aprilecon Dietetica (5-7 aprile 2006), Mostra conve-gno sull’alimentazione funzionale e dietetica.
