Long Beach gets into the Christmas Spirit the first week of De-cember with two very different and exciting concerts celebrat-ing the musical spirit of the season, both for those that love

classical fare and those who prefer the delightful popular music of the season.

On Sunday, December 1, the Long Beach Camerata Singers and Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Robert Istad continue their decade-long tradition by bringing Handel’s “Messiah” back for a bravura performance at the lovely and musically perfect Covenant Presbyterian Church.

“Messiah,” the oratorio by Georg Frideric Handel that was writ-ten nearly three hundred years ago, has become an integral part of the Christmas season and the version of it planned by the Camerata Singers, featuring soloists and a full symphony orchestra of the peri-od, is one of the highlights of the year, filled with passion and power.

Christmas with a more modern ring will be celebrated at the Tenth Annual Long Beach Symphony Orchestra Holiday Celebra-tion at the Terrace Theater of the Long Beach Performing Arts Cen-ter on Sunday, December 9. The LBSO Holiday Celebration series

proved spectacularly successful with both adults and children: se-rious music and sometimes not-too-serious music played by the LB Symphony Orchestra, with special events that include not only some of the best on-stage caroling of the year, but an appearance by Santa Claus himself.

This time around, to celebrate their tenth anniversary, the LBSO is being led by Maestro Thomas Wilkins, principal guest conductor at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. Maestro Wilkins will be joined by the husband and wife team of Broadway stars Elizabeth Southard and Gary Mauer. Together they starred in the recent na-tional tour of Harold Prince’s production of the Jerome Kern-Oscar Hammerstein II musical “Showboat” and as the Phantom and his love Christine in productions of Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” on Broadway and elsewhere. The LBSO concert will feature singing in the Terrace Theater’s large lobby before the per-formance, and a special price for folks in the upper balcony, which is quickly becoming known for the special “Balcony Club” the LBSO has created in the upper reaches of the Terrace Theater. Long Beach pone en el espíritu de la Navidad en la primera semana de diciembre con dos conciertos muy

diferentes y emocionantes que celebran el espíritu musical de la temporada, perfectos para aquellos que aman la música clásica y a los que prefieren la música popular de la temporada.

El domingo, 1 de diciembre en Long Beach, Camerata Singers y Symphony Orchestra bajo el Maestro Robert Istad continuarán su larga década de tradición trayendo de Handel “El Mesías” para un rendimiento en la preciosa y musicalmente perfecta la iglesia de Covenant Presbyterian.

Building a Better way to fly for long Beach

Convenience, Customer Service, Affordability,” declared Long Beach Airport Director, Mario Rodriguez, when describing the attributes of LGB (the aiport’s call letters).

With over 25 years experience in the aviation industry, Mr. Rodri-guez is currently on a mission to define LGB as the most efficient transportation system in Southern California.

After taking over the helm in February 2009 as the first Cuban-American director of a major America airport, Rodriguez has taken steps to improve the air travel experience for local, regional and out-of-state passengers. Initiatives to improve the airport’s infrastruc-ture resulted in an economic impact of $6.2 billion for the City of Long Beach in 2011. Such projects include improvements to the terminal roadway, runways, air carrier ramp, a parking garage and the construction of a new passenger concourse. The Long Beach Airport Area Complex employs 18,000 people, equating to 9% of the total workforce of Long Beach, and does not take a single penny from city tax revenue.

To understand Rodriguez’s vision to improve the Airport and the community surrounding it, one should look no further than the in-spiration derived from his Latin heritage. Being of Cuban descent, Rodriguez was taught at an early age to appreciate the struggle his parents endured during the Cuban Revolution. His mother studied law at the University of Havana, sitting in the same classrooms with Fidel Castro. After graduation, she became a diplomat who spoke Spanish, English and French. When Castro came into power, she quickly resigned her post, and refused to partake in the formation of a new Communist government. This led to anti-revolutionary ac-cusations, forcing her to change her identity and escape the country.

Born in Cuba, Rodriguez’s father owned several interests in a

province called Oriente. When the country nationalized all busi-nesses, he had to dissolve his proprietary ownerships and became subjected to a repressive cultural ideology forced upon him by the new Communist regime. As a result, both of Rodriguez’s parents were part of the first wave to leave Cuba for the United States, relo-cating to New York City.

“My parents were the greatest influence on my upbringing,” noted Rodriguez. “At an early age, they taught me to follow my dreams despite whatever obstacles. The understanding of what it means to be Latino is translated in all aspects of my work. I strive to inspire those the way my parents have inspired me.”

Born in Brooklyn, NY, but raised in Miami from the age of 11, Rodriguez graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Engineering. He quickly began working as a consultant for the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport, as well as others, overseeing de-velopment and airport privatization projects along the eastern coast of the United States. For the next three decades spanning the late 1980’s through 2009, his services as an airport aviation consultant and in airport management enabled him to travel throughout Latin America, where he continued to help develop and privatize airports in Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, El Salvador and various other countries in Central America. His ability to direct major infrastructure projects in two languages was seen as a critical asset to his colleagues in the aviation industry.

From 2002 to 2009, Rodriguez was the Deputy Director for the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. In order to protect the airport from high waters coming from the Gulf of Mexi-co, he oversaw an $800 million restoration project that implemented designs to elevate the levee around the airfield with armored con-

struction. Three days after completion, Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf of Mexico and flooded most of the city. How-ever, the airport was ul-timately saved by the new airfield system, thanks to the foresight of its deputy director.

Rodriguez’s current project for LGB includes the opening of a new passenger concourse in December. The new con-course will be partially open-roofed, and will en-able passengers to experi-ence a boutique courtyard environment. It will offer access to some of Long Beach’s most popular re-tail shops and gourmet eateries, including: McK-ennas on the Fly, George’s Greek Café, Taco Beach Cantina, 4th Street Vine, Polly’s Gourmet Coffee, Long Beach Clothing Co., Sweet Jill’s Bakery

and the Long Beach Business Journal News & Gifts. Rodriguez’s main objective is to build a new reality for the City

of Long Beach, one that makes all Latinos proud of their commu-nity, and one that continues to support the economic vitality of all its residents. P

at a recent Long Beach Kiwanis Club meeting, Damon Dunn showed a video and gave a presentation capturing the highlights of his life, tribulations, experiences and successes.

After retiring from the National Football League and a successful business career, Dunn has devoted his life to helping at risk, highly achieving students, personally sponsoring several programs throughout the Long Beach Unified School District.

Born in 1976 in Fort Worth, Texas, to a 16-year old single mother, Dunn grew up in dire poverty; living in a three-bedroom trailer with ten people. He grew up hunting and fishing to provide food and wore Salvation Army-donated clothes. From these humble beginnings, Dunn learned the value and the rewards of hard work, which he has demonstrated throughout his life.

He told a story of sitting in the hallway of his grammer school, after being kicked out of the class, and a passing Janitor told him to look into the classroom and see all the children that were studying to become his boss. It was the turning point in his life, and he vowed to dedicate himself to scholarship, motivation and accomplishment.

In high school, Dunn was an honor student and earned recognition as a Texas All-State Football player and was awarded a scholarship to

Stanford University. Upon graduation, he played in the NFL for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys.

Despite these achievements, Dunn has never forgotten what it is like to go to sleep hungry and wake with a sense of hopelessness. Currently, Dunn is on the board of directors for the Long Beach Education Foundation and on the board of directors for the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce. With Superintendent of LBUSD, Chris Steinhauser, he has started the Future Business Leaders Academy for at risk youth in the district. He also recently started, with California State University – Long Beach, the Long Beach College Prep Academy, which helps high school students with specific needs prepare for college admissions, SAT prep, and summer internships. He is a member of Rotary. He was recently named the Faculty Fellow for the UKLEJA Center for Ethical Leadership at CSULB. And he gave a grant to fund the Business Leadership Academy at CSULB to help increase the number of minority students in the college of business administration at CSULB. En una reunión reciente de Club Kiwanis en Long Beach, Damon Dunn mostró un video

e hizo una presentación capturando los mejores momentos de su vida, los sufrimientos, las experiencias y éxitos.

Después de retirarse de la Liga Nacional de Fútbol Americano y una exitosa carrera empresarial, Dunn ha dedicado su vida a ayudar estudiantes capaces y altamente en riesgo, patrocinando varios programas de ayuda en todo el distrito de Long Beach Unified School.

Nacido en 1976 en Fort Worth, Texas, de una madre soltera de 16 años de edad, Dunn creció en la pobreza extrema, viviendo en un remolque de tres dormitorios con 10 personas. Creció cazando y pescando para proveer alimentos y usando ropa donada de Salvation Army. Desde estos humildes comienzos, Dunn aprendió el valor y las recompensas del trabajo duro, que él ha demostrado a lo largo de su vida.

Dunn contó una historia de cuando un día, sentado en el pasillo de su clase de gramática después de ser expulsado, un portero que pasaba le dijo que

The month of November is called by the Panamanians the “Month of the Nation” because of the various independence festivals celebrated: No-vember 3rd celebrates Independence from Colombia (1903); the 4th of No-vember is the day of the Bandera; November 5th is a celebration in the city of Columbus; November 10th celebrates the First Cry of Independence; and November 28th celebrates Independence from Spain (1821).

We also are happy to announce that in 2014 we will be celebrating the hundred year anniversary of the opening of the Panama Canal. Panama will be represented in the Rose Parade 2014 by the Jose Daniel Crespo College band of 250 students. The Viva Panama Organization is actively seeking sponsors for the float in the parade. The holiday season is quickly approaching, a time when the family comes together for the common goal of enjoying one an-other’s company, cooking, laughing and quality time. Family

time for some may be happy and exciting, while for others, family time and the holidays may be stressful.

One way to support families in coming together to have a good time is by have a family needs assessment. Sure, this sounds technical and probably a little boring, but it could actually be the most insightful and helpful activity families could try to better understand one an-other.

As a parent, have you ever felt like you don’t understand your kids’ needs? Have you ever wondered what your husband, wife, sister or brother may be feeling about the way your family operates? Do you want to know what is currently working for your family and what is not working for your family?

If so, try this simple activity, “the way my family is now and the way

I want my family to be.” Gather all the members of your family, im-mediate or extended. Use a large sheet of paper (preferably butcher or construction) and give each family member a marker to draw symbols, pictures and words to describe the way the family is right now and ap-ply to the large piece of paper. You can also use old magazines to cut pictures out that represent your family currently. Allow at least 10-15 minutes for each family member to add their pictures and symbols.

Then put up another large sheet of paper and have the family brain-storm together on ways they want the family to be, drawing pictures, words, symbols to describe how you want the family holiday season to be. Once the activity is completed, have a family discussion about how each family member can support the goal of the family becoming more like they want it to be.

Try this, and maybe your holidays can be as joyful as they are meant to be! P

I‘ve done it all. You should have seen the golden centerpieces; they were beautiful. As for me, I was grumpy the entire day and when our guests arrived I was wishing they would go home soon so I could get some rest.

I lived in Bolivia for six years and enjoyed their simple family-centered Christmas traditions. The sharp contrast with American holiday practices challenges me to think about simplifying my family

He hecho todo. Deberías haber visto las piezas centrales doradas, quedaron hermosas. En cuanto a mí, yo estaba de mal humor todo el día y cuando nuestros invitados llegaron yo estaba deseando que se fueran pronto de la casa para poder descansar un poco.

Vivi en Bolivia por seis años y disfruté de sus sencillas tradiciones navideñas en familia. El fuerte contraste con las prácticas festivas de Norte América me reta a pensar en simplificar las tradiciones de mi familia para que al final de la temporada cuenten nuestras

bendiciones y todo lo que disfrutamos y no los regalos que no necesitamos y los saldos de tarjetas de crédito. En Bolivia, hacíamos empanadas en el campo con luz de las velas y escuchábamos música folklórica y jugábamos juegos sencillos con los niños.

¿Qué tal si simplificamos nuestras vidas, dando servicios, pequeños regalos utilitarios, o los que realzan la belleza en nuestra vida?

Recibimos cartas de amigos en Oregón deseándonos unas felices fiestas y diciéndonos cuantas horas trabajarán como voluntarios en nuestro nombre con Hábitat para la Humanidad. Un servicio hecho en nuestro nombre nos hace sentir que estamos teniendo un impacto en la comunidad mientras la mejoramos.

We’ve received cards from friends in Oregon wishing us happy holidays and telling us the number of hours they will volunteer on our behalf with Habitat for Humanity. Service done in our name makes us feel like we are having an impact on the community and making it better for everyone.

A handwritten card with a heartfelt message is always appreciated. Gifts from local artists or artisans add beauty to our lives and support

our city. Calendars and greeting cards from local artists or a book of poetry by a local writer stimulates the creativity in our community and contributes to the financial well being of our creative-class.

Unique gifts like these not only enhance the beauty in the recipient’s life they give us the chance to support our community and be mindful of our planet through each gift we give. When I make a purchase from a local artisan, I know I am providing an opportunity for them to express their creativity while moving one sale closer to being able to earn their living through art.

My favorite gift of all is being in the company of a well rested, engaged, joyous friend or family member who is not exhausted, broke, and worried about not having selected the perfect gifts for everyone. The choice is ours. I say let’s indulge ourselves…in a mindful and gloriously simple holiday season! P

In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, try to initiate conversations in your family about the holiday’s origins, focusing not only on the Pilgrims’ point of view, but also on what the day meant for

the Wampanoag Indians who celebrated it with the pilgrims and what it continues to signify for American Indians today.

All too often Thanksgiving is celebrated from a Eurocentric point of view. Tavares Avant, former president of the Wampanoag tribal council, cited this as an annoyance about the holiday. “It’s all glorified that we were the friendly Indians and that’s where it ends,” he said. “I do not like that. It kind of disturbs me that we...celebrate Thanksgiving…based on conquest.”

School children are particularly vulnerable to being taught to celebrate the holiday in this manner. Some schools, however, are making headway in teaching revisionist Thanksgiving lessons. Both teachers and parents can influence the way children think about Thanksgiving.

An anti-racist organization called Understanding Prejudice recommends that schools send letters home to parents addressing

efforts to teach children about Thanksgiving in a manner that doesn’t demean Native Americans. Such lessons will include discussions about why not all families celebrate Thanksgiving and why the representation of Native Americans on Thanksgiving cards and decorations has hurt indigenous peoples. The organization’s goal is to give students accurate information about Native Americans of the past and present, while dismantling stereotypes that could lead children to develop racist attitudes later on.

Anne Thundercloud of the Ho-Chunk Nation said that her people also give thanks on a continual basis. Accordingly, marking one day of the year to do so clashes with Ho-Chunk tradition to a degree. “We’re a very spiritual people who are always giving thanks,” she explained. “The concept of setting aside one day for giving thanks doesn’t fit. We think of every day as Thanksgiving.” Rather than singling out the fourth Thursday of November as a day to give thanks, Thundercloud and her family have incorporated it into the other holidays observed by the Ho-Chunk. PrEParation:1. in top of double boiler, slowly stir cornmeal into hot milk.2. Cook over boiling water, stirring occasionally, 20 minutes.3. preheat oven to 300f.4. lightly grease 2-quart baking dish.5. in small bowl, combine remaining ingredients, except cold milk.6. stir into the cornmeal mixture.7. pour into baking dish.8. pour cold milk on top, do not stir.9. bake, uncovered, 2 hours, or just until set but quivery on top.10. let stand 30 minutes before serving.

When the plantain slices are cool enough to handle (about 1 minute), smash them into flat rounds. 6. fry the rounds in the hot oil for 3 minutes. they will turn crisp and golden brown.

7. remove the slices with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. 8. in a mortar and pestle, mash together the bacon, garlic, peppers, onion and olive oil a little at a time until everything is incorporated. 9. Add the broth. if the stuffing is not moist enough, add more broth until you get the consistency you prefer. 10. serve the stuffing as it is or stuff your turkey and follow cooking instructions on the turkey package.

Long Beach is an incredibly vibrant and diverse city of nearly half a million people. Yet we don’t have a Long Beach-based television station covering our community from a local per-

spective. Long Beach Community Action Partnership announces PADNET, with a mission is to empower local voices on our public ac-cess channels – Charter 32 and Verizon 41 – and online. Long Beach residents can come to our facilities to access quality media training and all the tools necessary to produce locally created content – by and for the city of Long Beach.

Any resident of Long Beach is eligible for participation at PAD-NET, with membership available at different levels depending on your needs. The first step is to attend a free orientation that is offered twice a month at our facilities. Orientation will give you all the infor-mation you need to know to become a member, access the resources and facilities at PADNET and submit programming to our channel and website.

PADNET offers basic training and certification classes allowing

members to use our equipment, facilities and, starting in Janu-ary 2013, access to our full HD studio. The cost of these classes is minimal and will certify mem-bers to check out equipment and reserve editing suites and studio time.

PADNET also will offer advanced classes and workshops with curriculum designed to meet our members’ needs and requests. Some examples of classes include Animation, Photoshop, Media Manage-ment, or a class to help the transition from Final Cut Pro 7 to Final Cut Pro X.
