We will not be greeting one another with hugs and handshakes. We will not be having a bulletin (one will be available on-line at our website). There will be nothing in the pews (hymnals, cards, etc.). The pews will be taped off and partitioned for social distancing. There will be hand sanitizer at each entrance. There will be no Sunday Schools when we start. There will be no choir when we start. When we sing, everyone will be asked to sing less exuberantly than they once did. You will be asked to wear a mask while you are here. There will be other things as well. I will also be looking to make the services shorter in duration to shorten the time in the sanctuary which is a critical component. When the service is over, you will be asked to leave the building into the fresh air quickly and we may dismiss by row so as to not overcrowd the exits. We will gather again at some point. In the meantime, we still are a church active in the community. Our youth Sunday School has been meeting on Sunday Morning through the internet. Shawna has been staying connected to children and youth and Georgia has been doing wonderful things with our seniors. She takes 20 DVDs of the service out each week along with food to those who do not have any other way to watch the service. Please pray for the church. As I said, we will gather again at some point, and when we do, it will feel different. But when you come to praise God, it will feel right. Blessings and Peace, Pastor Harry Vision

Where there is no Vision, the people perish.

Proverbs 29:18

It seems strange that we are entering June and we are still in this phenomena of what church is today. As we look forward, we are not sure what church will look like in the near future. But this has been true at many different times in the life of the church. The church is always under pressure and the church is at its best when it responds in prayer service.

On June 14th, we will not have met for regular services for 13 weeks – 25% of the year. The last Sunday we did meet, our attendance was about one half of a normal Sunday. I expect, whenever we do meet again, it will be with reduced numbers and we need to know that that is ok. In fact, it needs to be.

As I write this, we are tentatively looking at our first Worship service back on June 21st. Now we must also realize that this is not set in stone. That is 30 days away from when I am writing this and a lot can happen in those 30 days.

FOCUS ON CUBA

Bendiciones!

Right after my article for the April newsletter, Cuba joined the rest of the world in dealing with the Covid 19 pandemic. They too went on lock down, completely stopping all flights into and out of the country. All house-holds were put on quarantine and peo-ple are only allowed to leave to buy essential supplies. When outside the home, masks are required and the po-lice regularly question people to ascer-tain the legitimacy of their excur-sion. The health ministry went door to door assessing symptoms and taking temperatures. Anyone with fever or other symptoms was sent to a hospital for 14 day quarantine. With stoppage of people and things coming into Cuba, essential items have become more scarce and more expensive, and they were already scarce and expen-sive. Cuba has fallen into a time when whatever fruit trees are in your yard are what you get to eat again. The church has used it's quarterly support to buy provisions when they are availa-ble and share them with church fami-lies, prioritizing the most needy and vulnerable. Thanks to the extreme precau-tions taken, there have been very few cases of Covid 19 and Cuba hopes to begin releasing restrictions soon. This is good for us because right now we can't send any aid items such as meds, vitamin c, or food. Yes, Cuba's biggest defense against the virus has been Vitamin C. Remember our broth-ers and sisters in Cuba as you view our online services. They are currently holding small bible studies themselves in their homes as most don't have electronics, internet, or access to WiFi to do anything jointly. Even school is being broadcast on State TV with each grade having an assigned time daily for lessons.

Public School Support Update

Soon after the schools closed and we were to remain at home, we received a request for a Trac Phone for a family at Sea Park Elementary. This family does not have a car and they did not have any way of communicating with teachers or other agencies that could help them. In coordination with Sea Park Elementary Guidance Counselor, Sarah Schroeder, we were initially able to provide the family with a Trac phone with 60 minutes and 30 day expiration on the phone. We have since provided 120 minutes and a 3 month expiration that will provide a phone for them through the summer. Thank you for your continued support of our budget, so that we can continue to help families in our beachside schools.

Seniors

All senior activities, including the June Lunch and a Movie have been cancelled through the summer. Senior activities will resume this fall. Watch the newsletters and bulletins for further information. Here’s what we’ve been doing during the Covid-19 stay at home orders. The Pastoral Care Min-istry along with the Senior Ministry has been busy staying in contact with those who do not have internet, but still want to connect with the church. Each week since the stay-at-home order was implemented, we have provided a DVD of the upcoming Sunday service, copy of the bulle-tin, copy of the eminder and a small meal or snack. Georgia Garrett personally delivers each week to 24 homes. Kyle Henderson and Lucy Hayes have prepared the homemade snacks each week. This is a good way for us to stay in contact. We can see how they are doing and provide any assistance they may need. Every-one is very grateful for all we are doing for them. On Easter Sunday, PattiAnn Marks, daughter of Pat Stutzbach cooked and delivered a lovely Easter meal along with a “cheer basket” for twelve households. Thank you, PattiAnn. Every-one is very appreciative of your kindness.

ORGANIZATIONS SENIOR MINISTRY SUPPORT

Humane Society We donated 5 LARGE bags of dog food, 8 cans of dog food, 2 bags of dog treats, 8 bags of cat food, 16 cans of cat food, 2 bags of cat treats and 4 bags of cat litter. One member gave $20 for cat/dog food because she felt that “nobody else was doing that.” Thank you!!

Handbell Ministry

The bells will be ringing again! We have some small groups of ringers who will begin practice in June, in preparation for offering some special music in August and beyond.

I love our wonderful ringers and look forward to having them share their talents once again!

If you have an interest in playing - even for a short session - we'd love to have you. Please call or text me and I can give you more details.

Missions Your donations are helping Since many people are out of work and need help providing food for their families, the Miscellaneous Mis-sions fund has sent an additional donation of $2000 to the South Brevard Sharing Center to help fill their food pantry and provide help to our local community. Church members can’t currently bring items for the Sharing Center to the alter, but even small donations are particularly important to them now. Their address is South Brevard Sharing Center, 17 E. Hibiscus, Melbourne, FL 32901 or the donations can be sent to the church and earmarked for the Sharing Center.

Remember July is School Supply Month Just a reminder that we will again be helping the local schools with school supplies this year throughout the month of July. Our school outreach team will prepare lists of the needed items in late June for distribution, but if you are out on one of these rare shopping trips most of us are making, look for items that could be of use. And of course, donations are always good. We provide each school with a gift certificate to buy what they need and do the same for the second semester, so monetary gifts go toward these.

Music Ministry

During these challenging days, I wanted to encourage you with these words from

the anthem “I Put My Hope in You” by Cindy Berry. * Words Edward Mote, 1797 – 1874

Sharon Maslin Choir Director, SBUMC

“Hope for tomorrow, strength for today, these are the blessings I receive from You. Mercy after mercy, grace after grace, until the day I finally see Your face.

My hope, my hope is in You. Whatever lies ahead You’ll carry me through. Holy, righteous King, You’re the song I sing, Every day, Your mercies are new.

Now I understand, forgiven and free. I am Yours through eternity, So Lord Jesus, I put my hope in You.

* ‘My Hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame; but wholly lean on Jesus name. ‘

My hope, my hope is in You. Whatever lies ahead You will carry me through. Holy, righteous King, You’re the song I sing. Everyday, Your mercies are new.

Now I stand, forgiven and free, I am Yours through eternity, So Lord Jesus, I put my hope in You.”

YOUTH & CHILDREN I MISS EACH & EVERY ONE OF YOU SO MUCH! I’m very thankful for technology to be able to see your faces through my phone & computer at least! I’ve enjoyed the calls to hear about how your homeschooling has been going & the ways you’ve kept yourselves entertained during social distancing. Thankfully, we’re almost on the other side of this & I am just so excited for that day!

PARENTS: If you aren’t already aware, I’ve created private Facebook groups called SBUMC Youth & SBUMC Kids. Parents, please join so you can stay up-to-date with these ministries.

YOUTH: We have a new Bible study to dive into called The Armor of God - Teen Edition - by Priscilla Shirer. We will be kicking off Summer with a new Bible Study on Wednesday, June 3rd, at 7:00PM via Zoom led by myself & one of our senior youth, Laura Virden. I’ve already co-led the wom-en’s bible study version & it’s really GOOD. Let’s strive to stay connected to Christ & each other over this school break. You will get to keep your copy. Don’t miss out!

CHILDREN & YOUTH: All other Summer plans are up in the air at this time, but we will continue meeting online through Zoom calls at 7:00PM on Sundays for Youth Group & Sunday mornings at 11:00AM through Zoom calls for Children’s Ministry, until we can gather again in person. Even then though, that may look a bit different & we’re working those things out now for a safe, smooth reopen-ing. Thank you, parents, kiddos & teens, for your patience, understanding & participation during these last few months of uncertainty. I couldn’t ask for anything more of you. This has been a trying season for sure - yet God is still so faithful.

MEMBERS: When we can safely return to in -person worship, there are going to be several volun-teer opportunities & some needed support. I am forming volunteer teams now & would absolutely love to have anyone who feels led to get involved with these awesome ministries in any capacity. Their selections vary every day. They have delicious, sandwiches, wraps and quiches. Their breakfast menu is extensive and creative, especially the omelets and their famous chocolate chip pancakes, to name a few.

Remember……………..NORTH BY SOUTH BISTRO and UPSIDE DOWN CAFÉ will also donate 10% to our church if you remember to write SBUMC on the top of your bill.

North by South has limited hours for a while……….Tues-Thurs- 3 pm to 8 pm, Fri, Sat, Sun – 12 to 8 pm, closed on Mondays. Upside Down Café has regular hours 7 am to 2 pm seven days a week.
