Our country is divided. On the polical specter, there has never been greater division. This polical division has impacted many families and friendships. It has divided our churches. There is an uncontrolled hatred developing in our country. A hatred that says if I disagree with you, I am allowed to be violent to you. This has been growing over the last 20 years and has become full blown. We no longer can agree to call evil, evil in our country. We wait to see if the violence is on our side, and then we will speak. This has been true, even of leadership in our denominaons. They are silent on some violence and speak out on others. This is wrong. This year the United Methodist General Conference, sched- uled in September, could mean that the United Methodists will no longer be united. The General Conference meets Aug. 29 - Sept. 7 in Minneapolis. There is talk of the church spling regarding the LGBTQ issue. Each side has drawn a line in the sand and the result is never good. A split will be hard on many of our congregaons who are already suffering from the pan- demic. Many have laid off staff and reduced their ministry to their communies because they have not met. I do not have the answer to much of this other than we need to seek Gods intervenon in all of this. Only these kinds of problems can be solved by prayer and fasng. I urge you to pray and (fast if physically able) this Lenten season. Division is never good, no maer how noble the cause. Even Jesus said in response to an aack on him accusing him of casng out demons in the name of Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons, said this, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolaon, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. We need to learn to exhibit grace and forgiveness when we deal with one another. We must not judge one another and we must recognize that change comes slowly. The only way we can truly do this as believers is to die to our own desires and seek Gods heart and Gods will. Again, this can only be done through prayer and fasng. (Contd. on page 2) Pastor Harry

    Vision

As Spring approaches, the Lenten season typically starts in February and is a time of reflection in the church. This year, we will begin the Lenten season on February 17 with worship that evening at 6PM. Next year, Lent does not begin until the beginning of March.

The church has observed Lent since the very early days of our faith. Irenaus of Lyons (c.130-c.200) wrote of such a season in the earliest days of the church. But it wasn’t formalized until after the church became “legal” in the early 300’s AD. By then, it was a 40 day period depending on how one counts the days. Today’s Lenten season is 46 days. 40 days of reflection along with 6 mini-Easter Sundays.

It was a time of reflection of one’s faith, our relationship with Christ and the work of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross. The sad fact, Lent has become little of a reflection period and more of simply another day in life. But it is important to take time out for reflection. Fasting is a big part of Lent and has been from the very beginning. Scripture notes that fasting along with prayer has greater power. In the 9th chapter of Mark, the disciples asked Jesus why they cannot cast out a demon even though Jesus has given them this power. His answer is that this kind only comes out with prayer and fasting. Fasting is an important part of the Jewish faith and of the early church. Fasting is denying oneself so that one could spend more time with God. The idea of fasting is to take the time one did in what ever one was fasting from to spend with God. And fasting can be more than food. We see this in Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians where he writes about not withhold-ing intimacy a marriage. He writes in 7:5, “Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer.”

This year, we need to be in prayer and fasting. It is needed for our nation, our church and even our world. This year has a lot of uncertainty to it. Much of what happens will affect our church by how we react to what is happening. Our country is divided. On the political specter, there has never been greater division. This political division has impacted many families and friendships.

This has been true, even of leadership in our denominations. They are silent on some violence and speak out on others. This is wrong.

This year the United Methodist General Conference, sched-uled in September, could mean that the United Methodists will no longer be united. The General Conference meets Aug. 29 - Sept. 7 in Minneapolis. There is talk of the church splitting regarding the LGBTQ issue. Each side has drawn a line in the sand and the result is never good. A split will be hard on many of our congregations who are already suffering from the pan-demic. Many have laid off staff and reduced their ministry to their communities because they have not met.

I do not have the answer to much of this other than we need to seek God’s intervention in all of this. Only these kinds of problems can be solved by prayer and fasting. I urge you to pray and (fast if physically able) this Lenten season. Division is never good, no matter how noble the cause. February Message from Pastor Harry (Continued from page 1)

This year can be great or it can be terrible. We can make it wonderful if we remember that God is in control. We need to be people whose identity is to love our neighbor and to love our enemies. Remember, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not de-light in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always per-severes. Love never fails.” They will know we are Christ’s followers by our love.

    Blessings and Peace

    2020 Financial Update

Our giving was lower in 2020 than prior years, but in addition to finding ways to do ministry without spending money, we in-creased our income in the following ways:

Increased promotion of online giving through the SBUMC app

Applied for and received a PPP loan/grant (from the SBA through the CARES Act) for $57,900 for the church and $39,000 for the Preschool.

Preschool received 2 additional COVID grants from the Early Learning Coalition $10,400

Parking fundraiser during AAU track meet in August brought in $7,800.

Pumpkin Patch sold out even though the delivery was delayed by 6 days netting $3,100

Because of our creativity, we finished the year in the black.

Next month: More examples of our creativity.

It is registration time at Preschool for the coming 2021-2022 school year. Please visit our web-site at www.sbumc.net/preschool for details about registering your student. Church members are given first priority through February 28, then currently registered students are added to the next school years rosters and then anyone who has pre-registered.

Preschool has decided that with the positivity rates going up in January our students should wear masks more often. We are asking them to wear them into the classroom during entry time, during table time, and circle time. It may take a little time, but they are all wearing masks for part of the day.

During January, some of our classes do transportation and that is when Racer Rob and Time-keeper Mom come visit the school in our racing gear and talk to the students about auto racing and safety. Pictures to come next month.

Some of the classes learn about the Gingerbread Man, we try to bake one and guess what? He jumps out of the pan and runs all over the church and we have to find the clues to hunt for him. Somehow he always ends up in our classrooms all decorated.

    YAH LUNCHEONS

No YAH luncheons are scheduled at this time. Across many parts of the world on February 14, many flowers, cards, gifts and going out to dinner with a significant other will be exchanged between loved ones. We should remember that it is a holiday that we all can enjoy this day symbolizing love. It’s a time to show how much you care and love not only significant others, but friends, family and pets. It’s a day to show that you care and love no matter what our circumstances are. Valentine’s day, also known as St. Valentine’s Day or Feast of St. Valentines. If a spa weekend isn’t in the cards, pamper yourself at home. Take a long bubble bath, chill out with a hy-drating face mask and beverage of your choice! One way or another, end the day with loving self-care. Remember – everyone has the right to feel and know they are LOVED! God is always with us, no matter what the situation is. Dear Friends, let us love one another, for love comes

from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not

2020 In Our Rearview Mirror Most people are glad that 2020 is in the past – hoping this year will be better, but at SBUMC, we “became the church” for many in our community.

This is our 2020 Local Outreach list: $3000 distributed to members to spend at local merchants in $10s & $20s & 33 gift cards

to a local restaurant. Boxes of supplies & $200 gift cards delivered to 6 local schools. Fed the Satellite Football teams before games by preparing food in our kitchen & trans-

porting the cooked meals to the school. Prepaid phone and minutes to students so they could communicate with teachers while

virtual schooling. 16 Food Distribution days – 50+ volunteers involved, over 3000 families served in part-

nership with Brevard VOAD, Kingdom Gate Worship Center, Satellite Beach Lions Club, BP Self Storage of Palm Bay, and Lowe’s in Indian Harbour Beach.

Food items delivered to So. Brevard Sharing Center, Daily Bread, CITA & Veterans Transition

A record number of Thanksgiving baskets - 23 families – entirely from donations. Angel Tree gifts for 10 families – partnered with Lions Club for their meals – all delivered

by church members. Responded to 45 requests for assistance with rent, utilities, child care, gasoline & gro-

cery cards totaling $4,000 Gave out bags of food pantry items accompanied by Publix gift cards every week since

the beginning of the shut down. $1,725 and 3 weeks working on projects for 15 community members by NOMAD teams

and church members. Food & kitty litter to the Brevard Humane Society Financial support of local groups that provide aid: South Brevard Sharing Center $3,000; Daily Bread $900; Love Inc. $400; St. Stephen’s

Way $500; Habitat for Humanity $400; Second Harvest Food Bank $300; Family Promise of Brevard $240

We know there were additional things done by our people that are not listed. Thank you church for the love you show to our community.

    Mission News

Our church has supported the Church World Service blanket initiative for many years. Last year, they supplied nearly 64000 blankets in the US and another 37500 blankets internationally. These blankets can provide warmth on a cold night, provide some privacy in a crowded shelter or be used to carry belongings during a quick evacuation. To people fac-ing a crisis such as a hurricane, an earthquake or a fire, they are a tangible demonstration of God’s love when all else seems chaotic. On February 21 we will be collecting for CWS Blankets. Please considering giving. $10 provides one blanket to a brother or sister in need.

    DINING OUT IN FEBRUARY

Our restaurant of the month is SUN ON THE BEACH. They are located south of us, on the west side of A1A. Look for the picnic tables in the sand with the Key West vibes…lime green and tropical colors. They are open every day from 6:30 am to 2 pm. The menu has an island flair, with diversified selections for breakfast and lunch. For the southerners they serve yummy shrimp and grits and their fried green tomatoes are the best around.

REMEMBER to tell your server that you are from the church and write SBUMC on your bill. They will do-nate 10% of your bill to us. Their phone number is 321-777-9483 for take-out.

EVERY TIME you eat at UPSIDE DOWN CAFÉ they will donate to the church when you remember to tell your server and write SBUMC on your bill.

Our local restaurants are extremely grateful for our support, especially during these tumultuous times. Our Dining Out program is in it’s 15th year. We have provided funds towards our kitchen renovation and now we are supporting the COC fund.

SBUMC’S Prayer Ministry “God does nothing except in response to believing prayer.” That is a quote from John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church. Jesus placed great importance on prayer as well. He said in John 14:13, “And whatever you ask in My Name, I will do it that the Father may be

glorified.” (NKJV) Our church has a mission from God –to reach out to the people in our community; to en-courage, to care for those in need, to support and to love. One of the ways we do that is to pray for them, as well as pray for each other. There are several ways in which you can participate in praying for people. 1.Meet with others in the sanctuary each first and third Monday at 8:30 am. 2.Sign up for one month to pray in the Prayer Room. Commitment is to pray at least once a week for the month. 3.Be an intercessor at home. The prayer list and updates will be provided. It is such a privilege to pray for others and then rejoice when we hear of the answers. John Wesley said, “Prayer is where the action is.” We agree! If you would like to participate in this important ministry, please contact one of the team mem-bers.

Lillian Moore – 773-8858. Pat Hunter –777-3144. Linda Lees –777-0179.

Attention: Each month in the monthly newsletter, the Prayer Team would like to feature an article on how God is working in your life. We would like to learn and share with others your God experiences. If this is something you would like to do, send your article to Kyle Henderson in the church office, [email protected] by the third Friday of each month. We will put it in the upcoming newsletter.
