Living God’s Word
The Eucharist has been called the “bread of angels” (Psalm 78:25). It is a free gift from
God. It is offered to give us eternal life because through it we receive the life of Christ, “the true bread from heaven” (John 6:32). Jesus promised that those who believe and eat it will hunger and thirst for nothing
throughout all eternity. Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Adults Catholics who have not received their First Communion
or Confirmation, as well as members of other religions or no
religion seeking to become a Catholic, are invited to contact
the rectory to begin the process of inquiry. Please leave your
name and phone number, indicating whether you would prefer
the sessions of formation in English or in Spanish, and one of
our deacons will be in touch with you. The Rite of Christian
Adultos) has its sessions on Sunday mornings in the Parish
Life Center.
CARNIVAL NOTICE
We continue to monitor our necessary planning for our
Parish Carnival, scheduled for September 21-25. We
hope that we will still be able to enjoy the traditional
rides and games, while providing a more limited menu
of foods that are easily eaten and carried by hand. We
will be asking for your help as we get closer, either in
donations of items or volunteering in a booth.
A Warm Welcome to Our New Deacon Airán Negrín!
¡Una cálida bienvenida a nuestro nuevo Diácono
Airán Negrín!
In union with CDC and State guidelines, we STRONGLY
RECOMMEND that EVERYONE WEAR A MASK when coming for Mass or other
more crowded gatherings indoors, as everyone’s vaccine status is not known and the
Delta variant of the Covid virus seems to be increasing. This includes when coming forward for Communion.
Thank you for your cooperation!

Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners, Next weekend, you are invited to stand with Africa by supporting the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. Through this special second collection, Catholics in the United States help the Church share the Gospel through evangelization, catechesis, formation of priests and religious sisters, and mass media, while also working to build peace and reconciliation between neighbors. Your support helps the young and growing Church minister to the ongoing pastoral needs of the faithful throughout Africa.
On the following weekend (Aug. 14-15), you will also be asked, through the Missionary Cooperation Plan of the Archdiocese, to support the AMEN Foundation. This Catholic Organization, founded in 1990, strives to promote, support, and strengthen Catholic religious vocations and ministries, enabling a sharing of ministry personnel and resources between several American dioceses with the churches in many African countries as well. We will share more about their specific efforts in next week’s bulletin.
Msgr. Richard Arnhols, Pastor
Reflection on Today’s Scripture Readings
Unlike mortals, angels do not die. Nor do they need to eat or drink. Without corruptible bodies, they live eternally with God. But the psalm for today describes the manna that the Israelites ate in the desert as “the bread of angels” (78:25). As the first reading tells us, it seemed to them that it came down from heaven every night. Through the manna, God gave them life when death seemed imminent. Through the manna, their faith in God’s eternal care for them was revived. In the case of the Israelites, they received life by eating the bread from heaven. And the life they were given allowed them to believe. In the case of the disciples of Jesus it’s the other way around. We must believe in Jesus as “the true bread from heaven” (John 6:32) in order to receive the eternal life that he provides. —Virginia Stillwell Copyright © 2014, World Library Publications. Stewardship: Sharing our Time, Talent, and Treasure!
“Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not.” E 16:4
When the Israelites gathered more than their daily portion of manna, the surplus became wormy and rotten. In the same way today, self-reliance, pride and ego lead to hoarding and excessive surplus of goods and money. Living a stewardship lifestyle helps us discern our “wants” from our “needs”. Living a grateful and generous lifestyle reminds us that God will provide all that we need and that we have plenty to share.

—Virginia Stillwell Derechos de autor © 2014, World Library Publications. Administradores: ¡Compartiendo Nuestro Tiempo, Talento, Y Tesoro!
"Cada día la gente saldrá y recogerá su ración diaria;
THE BREAD OF LIFE
Today’s Gospel has the crowd asking Jesus three questions. First, “When did you get here,” to which Jesus responds by rebuking them for their failure to grasp his miracle as a “sign,” an occasion to put faith in him. Their second question about accomplishing the “works of God” has Jesus respond that faith is the “work” that God wishes. Many scholars believe this is John’s answer to the faith-works dichotomy emerging in the early Christian community. Faith is the work of God in the believer, John would have us understand. The third question asked by the crowd is a request for a “sign” that would allow them to put faith in Jesus, as the manna in the desert allowed the Israelites to put faith in the Lord God. Jesus answers by revealing himself as the “bread of life” that “comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

R.I.C.A.
