FATHER DON’S GOSPEL REFLECTIONJN 9:1-41

Readings for This Week: March 12 - 16

Monday Is 65: 17-21; Ps 30; Jn 4: 43-54Tuesday Ez 47: 1-9, 12; Ps 46; Jn 5: 1-16Wednesday Is 49: 8-15; Ps 145; Jn 5: 17-30Thursday Ex 32: 7-14; Ps 106; Jn 5: 31-47Friday Wis 2: 1a, 12-22; Ps 34; Jn 7: 1-2, 10, 25-30

Daily readings can be accessed online from our parish Web site, www.stjohnwc.org. You can also access them

from our parish app!

“‘Do you believe in the Son of Man?’” He answered and said, ‘Who is he sir, that I may believe in him?’ Jesus said to him, ‘You have seen him, and the one speaking with you is he.’ He said, ‘I do believe, Lord,’ and he worshiped him.”

What’s in a name? For the second week now, we have a powerful story about a person’s conversion, yet the person is nameless. Last week it was the woman at the well and this week it is the man born blind. Neither are named because we are called to see ourselves in each of them. They both came to have deep faith in Jesus and they saw him for who he is and was: the Son of God, the savior of the world.

Today in the Gospel, the man born blind became Jesus’ defender to the chief priests and the scribes. No one wanted to believe that Jesus could cure the man, but if he did do this, he surely was a man from God. They all questioned his authority and they wanted to try to prove that the man and Jesus were not who they said they were. They were never going to win. You can see the man growing stronger as the story progresses.

The rest of the story begs the question: who is really blind? From the officials to the blind man’s parents, no one seemed to want to recognize Jesus as the one who heals. There was humor when the blind man was asked to tell the story again; he asked if the chief priests wanted also to become disciples. Needless to say, they did not and threw him out of the temple.

For the first time the blind man, now able to see, came face-to-face with Jesus himself. It was the moment of con-version. It was a time for the man to embrace Jesus, the Son of Man, the Messiah, his savior. What a powerful story that leads to the powerful profession of faith.

So, how is your faith journey going these days? Has Jesus sought you out and called you before him? Standing before the Son of Man, how would you answer about believing in him? Can we see him or are we still blind? Have we learned nothing this Lent about our relationship with Jesus? Are we stuck like the elders of the church in Jesus’ time? Perhaps we need Jesus to lead us to the waters and make clay for the eyes of our souls. Well, Jesus is ready to free us from being lost and blind. All we have to do is seek where he may be found. It doesn’t have to be a long journey; he is standing before you now, waiting to open the eyes of your soul. Once cured, we are free to see Je-sus for who he is, our personal savior. It is not too late. He is calling you. With sight restored, we can continue our journey to the cross and rise with him on Easter Sunday. What a gift we have in Jesus. Have a great week!

St. John working to be a “Laudato Si” Community” The Cincinnati Catholic Archdiocese has created a program to recog-nize Catholic parishes and institutions that live out Pope Francis’ Lau-dato Si’ message of caring for God’s creation. The St. John Justice and Peace Commission is working to obtain that recognition for our parish. The program requires: 1) parish facilities to have achieved a Green Fa-cility Standard, and 2) ten percent of households to complete a House-hold Green Assessment to encourage awareness and give families new ideas to care for creation. The facilities at St. John have been upgraded to achieve the required energy efficiency standard. We are now asking parish households to go online and take the Household Green Assess-ment survey at https://goo.gl/forms/SI2N3Qq3O6OC8PsH3

The form is short and can be completed in just a few minutes. Parish members are encouraged to complete the assessment and to take ac-tion to be good stewards of our world.

St. John Summer Festival 2018August 3, 4, & 5Anyone and everyone can vol-unteer at the St. John Fam-ily Festival! Over the next few weeks, we will highlight differ-ent ways of being involved… from baking goodies, to run-ning a booth, to assisting with setup. This week, we will focus on the infrastructure of the festival. It takes dozens of people to help with the setup, inner workings and teardown of our parish festival.

Electrical Setup and Teardown: In this area, workers will hang wires on light poles and posts. For this work, we need people who are organized, able to follow directions clearly, and who are secure in climbing a ladder. It’s not dangerous, as the lines are not yet plugged in! This year, the lines go up at 8 a.m. on July 21. Plan on working through lunch. After the festival, workers will take down the wires and make sure that they are stored in a neat and orderly fashion. Teardown day this year is August 8 from 6-8:30 p.m.

Lighting Setup and Teardown: In this area, workers will hang the lights in each booth and area for the festival. For this work, we do not need any specific skills. This year, the lights go up at 6 p.m. on August 1 (backup date for inclement weather is August 2). Plan on working through 8:30 p.m. After the festival, workers will take down the lights and make sure that they are stored neatly. Tear-down day for lighting this year is August 6, from 7 a.m. through 9 a.m.

Security at the Festival: We have three to four people on secu-rity detail during every shift at the festival. These workers team up with the WC police and the festival committee to make sure that the grounds are secure and safe for everyone to enjoy.

General Festival Setup: We will need helpers all day on August 2 and 3 We provide lunch and moral support! Workers will hang signs, place chairs and tables in booths/ eating areas, and other general tasks. If we could get 15-20 people each day, this would help us tremendously!

Booth Delivery during the Festival: We need runners to take food to the food booths, as well as ice and other heavy supplies to the booths with the use of small motorized utility carts.

Tear-down: Finally, we need a lot of help with festival tear-down! At 9 p.m. on Sunday, August 5, we need people to take down and stack tables and chairs, take the baskets inside, and put the games into the festival garage or parish Center. It takes about 1 hour if we get enough help!

Please be sure to sign up for one of these important roles! If you have questions or can’t sign up online, feel free to email Joan Seibenick at [email protected].

Mark your calendars for the activities you would like to assist with! You can already sign up online at: http://stjohntheevangelistchurch.volunteerlocal.com/volunteer/?start_over&id=12931

A Great Way To Be Involved In The Parish! Leading the Liturgy of the Word with Children is an excel-lent way for you to get involved in the parish! The goal of this ministry is to provide a meaningful and FUN! experi-ence for Children Grades 1, 2, and 3 during the Liturgy of the Word at the 9:30 and 11:30 AM Sunday Masses. Lots of resources are available to help you as a facilitator relate the Sunday readings to them in a way that is interesting, understandable and empowers them to reflect upon its message and connect it to their daily lives. It is not a reli-gion class, Liturgy of the Word with Children is intended to help the children pray and reflect on God’s Word.

We are currently looking for individuals and/or couples like you to be a great part of this ministry and lead a ses-sion during one of those mass times. You don’t need to do it every weekend, or even every other weekend. Most leaders lead a session ONCE A MONTH, or even ONCE EVERY OTHER MONTH! If you are interested in be-coming a leader, feel free to sit in on a session and see how it’s done! Then, contact Scott Steinke at the parish offices (777-6433) or at [email protected] for more information on how you can be a leader in this ministry!! This may be the ministry here at St. John that calls you by name!
