The room is used to locate some our library of books, with others being located around the school in subject libraries, as a meeting place for students to engage in meaningful dialogue or play a game of chess, and as a location for inspiration in the form of our exhibitions. This term our focus for the Cabinet exhibition is crime and will feature one of our esteemed alumnae, Margery Allingham. Margery was a crime and mystery novelist whose literary breakthrough came with the publication of The Crime of the Black Dudley and the introduction of the character Albert Campion. These books and this character were later adapted by the BBC into the successful television drama, Campion. This term, with the aid of our new Year 7 Cabinet of Curiosity Captains, we will be developing the exhibit to explore the world of crime and mystery fiction, gain an insight into the world of forensics through a display by the Year 9 Critical Thinking class and get an overview of the classic study in Psychology known as the Stanford Prison Experiment by Philip Zimbardo. The exhibit will develop over the course of the term, and will be complemented by a wonderful Inspire Me event for Year 9-U6 students on Thursday 12 February. Our students continue to find sporting success across the region. Several of our Year 7 and Year 8 students competed in the Bedfordia Cross Country event earlier this week and produced some excellent results. Seven students were selected prior to the Christmas break to represent the Cambridge region in the county cross country meet and our U14, U16, U19 netball teams will compete at regionals later this month. Good luck to all of our sports teams. The Senior School is always a hive of activity. All of our students are given the opportunity to try a multitude of experiences and unearth hidden talents and interests. On Wednesday 28 January our Year 9 students will be showcasing their talents in design, drama, music and visual arts in a spectacular Creative Arts evening. Dear Parents,

The Cabinet of Curiosity is a central feature of the Senior School. Two teams of runners competed at Bedfordia last week in muddy and rather changeable weather conditions. Their spirits were not dampened though and they all produced gutsy and determined performances and were a real credit to the school.

The Year 7 Team consisting of Frances Haines, Grace O’Connor, Ella Miels, Sarah Marshall, Maddie Frear, Phoebe Everitt, Josie Stock and Aoife Screaton came 4th place as a team, competing against over 20 teams, a great achievement and very well deserved.

Particular mention must go to Frances Haines who came 1st and won the race in style showing what a talent she is. She set off quickly and led from the front to secure an outstanding victory, many congratulations Frances. Also great performances by Sarah Marshall in 9th place and Grace O Connor in 10th place, all competing against over 150 competitors.

The Year 8 Team comprising of Francesca Töpel, Katya Borodina, Fenella Leonard, Ella Zatouroff, Georgie Edwards, Eleanor Boggie and Lydia Law are awaiting their team results but all produced very fine performances. Particular mention must go to those individuals who competed in their first cross country event to enable a team entry, many thanks.

Individually, congratulations go to Francesca Töpel who came 3rd place overall with a very strong and determined performance against tough opposition and again competing against over 150 competitors. Well done.

Bedfordia Team Cross Country Invitation Competition

Good luck to the following girls: Melissa Dix, Henriette Topel, Francesca Töpel, Frances Haines, Grace O Connor, Ella Miels and Sarah Marshall who have been selected to race in the Cambridge District Cross Country Team tomorrow at The Kings School, Ely.

Races start at 10.15am and all support is greatly appreciated.

At the start of the new year, our alumni office had a request from the University of Tasmania to research an alumna, Myrtle Aldren Wright, a peace activist and writer who was at school during WW1. A fascinating story unfolded, and we hope you will enjoy reading about Myrtle and her achievements, with photographs, on our website (read it here).

We also published ‘A history in 10 objects’ to celebrate our 130th anniversary four years ago, which brings alive 10 objects in our archives to illustrate the treasures we preserve.

Our archive at Senior School holds uniforms, books, registers and photographs dating back to our founding in 1881. We use different elements for exhibitions and displays at our reunions, which provides fascinating insights into our history. If you would like to donate to our archives, please get in touch with Melissa Santiago-Val.

We have recently received some great news on a couple of our former science teachers:

Dr Jane Williamson who taught chemistry was made MBE in the New Years’ Honours list.

Lady Ursula Oxburgh, who was also Head of Chemistry, has had great success winning two bronze medals in both the sprint and long distance Orienteering events at the World Masters Championships in Brazil (at age 80!). You can read about Ursula Oxburgh in the Cambridge News.

We are now back in touch with Ursula, who has now joined our alumni Facebook profile. She was delighted to see the story had attracted so many comments and memories from alumni. Ursula commented:

“I’ve loved reading all your comments. [When we were] cycling in Suffolk, someone consumed a daffodil at the youth hostel because the food was pretty awful. I remember the soup tasted of water. We also cycled in Norfolk which was hillier than we had expected but the food in the youth hostels was somewhat better. We had quite a lot of trouble with punctures that time but after that Mr Green came with us and he did the punctures! Then there were all the D of E expeditions. I’m glad you enjoyed it (or those who didn’t are keeping quiet!) I had a ball so thank you, girls.”
