First of all, be happy! Your wedding will be an amazing day, but it is also the prelude to an amazing marriage. You’ve committed to spending your life with the partner you love – that’s what really matters. It’s easy to get buried under the details of planning, budgeting and coordinating. But in the end, it’s the marriage that’s important.

From “I will” to “I do,” Pacific Coast Weddings will be there for you. You’ll find information on selecting vendors, lists so you don’t miss anything, a budget worksheet and a countdown checklist in the latter half of the book. Don’t be afraid to scribble notes in

the margins! You can also find us on Facebook to ask for help or advice, or to share your stories and photos both before and after the big day.

The options for any wedding are endless. But before you pick a date, location, dress or flowers, you and your partner should decide what’s really important to both of you. There are no wedding “musts.” Whether it’s a tradi-tional ceremony in a huge cathedral or a casual affair in a park, it’s your day.

Your wedding is a reflection of the life you are about to build together. It’s a vow you make to each other before family and friends, followed by an amazing party. Planning the specifics will be stressful and at times difficult, but in the end, you’ll be married! And that’s the only real measure of your wedding’s success.

The memories of your wedding will last a lifetime. So make it your wedding, worth remembering.

you’ve said yes – now what?

how do you get organized? As you work through the planning process, you’ll collect brochures, busi-ness cards, copies of quotes or contracts, notes and samples. You’ll need at least one wedding-designated shoebox to keep track of it all (unless the samples are of cakes, in which case they should be eaten posthaste).

Realistically, you’ll need more than a shoebox to stay on track. A big three-ring binder is the go-to organizational method because you can add, subtract

and sort information with minimal fuss.Important information should stay

up front. Contact information for everyone playing a role in your wedding will help when you need a question an-swered on the fly. Keep a digital copy of this list online in a location like Google Docs – that way you can access and update it from anywhere.

Separate sections for budget, ceremony, reception, guests, attire and decor will help you keep track of which deposits have been paid, which guests have sent RSVPs, who will be giv-ing toasts, an order of events for your reception, seating or setup plans and, of course, your marriage license.

A timeline of who will be where with what and when will help the day run smoothly. On the big day, hand your binder to a trusted friend or your wedding coordinator and get down to business – enjoying the celebration!

We’ve got your to-do list covered! Start with our countdown

checklist on page 38. On page 44, you’ll find

questionnaires for prospective venues, vendors and more!

Your guests will remember the small touches that make your wedding truly yours. From the invitations to the favors, every aspect of your wedding is a chance to show off your unique personality.

One of the simplest ways to personalize your wedding is with footwear. No one says your wedding shoes must be ivory satin heels. Galoshes, cowboy boots, wild socks and fabulous stilettos are just some of the options.

Favors, decorations, invitations, programs, attire, food and more are all ways to tell guests the story of your love – a small, unexpected touch will often be the most re-membered aspect of your wedding.

For inspiration, think about your favorite things to do together, places that have meaning for you, important dates in your relationship or stories you’d like to share.

From invitations to thank you cards,

color and design can help

define your wedding theme.

crowning gloryFar from the requirement it once was, a traditional veil is just one option among many. Accessories abound for hair of any length.

If your hair is short, look for sparkly clips or a tiara-style headband. Longer hair can hold a fascinator featuring any combina-tion of feathers, flowers or jewels. Collecting photos of styles you like will help you articulate to a poten-tial stylist exactly what you want.

Schedule a trial run a few weeks in advance of your wedding, bringing along any accessories you’d like to include in your style. This will also help you nail down how much time you’ll need to allow on the big day for styling time.

And remember that working with your hair’s natural tendencies will save you a lot of headache – and hairspray – on the big day.

You know your wedding attire will be the most documented outfit of your life, so make sure you feel great in whichever dress you choose!

When you start the hunt for the perfect wedding dress, the options can be overwhelming. Start by narrowing the field. Think about the outfits in your wardrobe that show off your best features and make you feel beautiful. Once you figure out what you already love, picking a dress style you like will be much easier.

When you try on gowns, bring pictures of your favorite gowns and specify exactly what you like about them to help the salesperson select options for you to try on.

Page 15: Pacific Coast Weddings 2012

When it comes to your dress, go with your instincts.

If your mother or maid of honor loves a dress that just doesn’t

feel right, stay strong! You’re the one who will be wearing it.

Flowers can provide the details that really make your wedding stand out. With the astounding variety available, you’re sure to find something you like.

Carrying a bridal bouquet is a tradi-tion that dates back to ancient times, but for your wedding you’ll probably want to swap the aromatic garlic for a pretty bloom or two.

Flowers can also be used to per-

sonalize your ceremony and reception venue. If your venues are separate, ask about reusing ceremony arrangements to jazz up your reception.

If you’re working with professional florists, be sure to listen to them! Ask for advice and recommendations. Remember, you’re hiring a professional who brings along years of experience working with flowers and weddings.

One of the very first steps in planning your wedding is deciding where to have it.

Many venues book a year or more in advance. Choose a spot early so you don’t strike out as the big day draws closer.

No matter what style of wedding you’re planning, you’ll need to keep a few considerations in mind.

First, decide whether you’ll be having the ceremony and reception in the same location. If you separate the two, think about how your guests will travel from ceremony to reception. If you opt for a single location, consider what your guests will be doing if you take an hour after the ceremony for formal portraits.

The number of guests you’re hoping to include will dictate many aspects of your venue. Are you plan-ning on a small crowd or are you inviting everyone you’ve ever met?

Finally, decide how much work you’re willing to do. To simplify the planning process, look for a venue with in-house catering services.

Along with well wishes for a long and happy life together, your loved ones might want to give you and your part-ner a gift to celebrate the start of your lives together. As exciting and some-times surprising as it is to receive gifts, remember that guests are not obliged to give one. It truly is the thought that counts.

Bridal registries are useful for guests who want to make sure they’re giving something you’ll use and love. When you’re creating your registry – either online or in a store – be sure to provide

a gift option for every budget level. The mix should be mostly mid-range

and lower-cost items, with a few more expensive gift options thrown in. You’ll want to take care when selecting each item on your list – make sure you’ll actually use and love it, because chances are, you’ll get it.

Remember to also consider the con-venience of your guests, especially those from out of town. Online registries can solve a lot of problems, but make sure guests who aren’t tech-savvy have a brick-and-mortar option as well.

Never include registry informa-tion in your paper invitations. You can point guests to your wedding website if you have one, and if they ask, you or your maid of honor can provide them with details. Think of your registry as information that should be pulled from you and your partner, rather than information that should be pushed on your guests.

The one thing you can’t do with your wedding is do it alone. At the very least, you’ll need an officiant or official to do the actual marrying.

If you opt for something a little more elaborate, a wide range of professionals are available to help you along the way.

planning If you’re juggling a job, family and social life, you may not have time to plan the wedding of your dreams. A wedding coordinator or event planner can help your wedding go off without a hitch. These pros have the benefit of experience – though this may be your first wedding, it isn’t theirs.

Keep in mind that a wedding coor-dinator doesn’t have to hold your hand every step of the way. If you just want someone to keep things moving on your wedding day, many coordinators will offer that service. They can handle as much or as little of your wedding plan-ning as you’d like.

photography & videography Aside from the marriage itself, of course, photographs are the most lasting aspect of your wedding. You can share these memories again and again, revisiting them with your partner year after year, until your grandkids are marveling at how young you looked during your 50th anniver-sary celebration. Your wedding photos can become priceless family heirlooms – if preserving these memories is a priority for you, this is not the place to economize.

A professional photographer can capture the emotion, beauty and love that will fill your wedding day. Find out whose work you like and book a photographer early. Like some venues, the most sought-after photographers can book up to a year in advance. See page 46 for a list of questions to ask prospective photographers.

catering What is a party with-out food? You don’t need to provide a six-course, sit-down meal for hundreds (unless that’s the type of wedding you’ve always dreamed of ), but some-thing to nibble on is always appreciated by a hungry guest.

Whether on-site with your venue or independent, a good caterer can work with you to create the perfect menu.

Between a five-star affair and a backyard barbecue, however, there is a vast middle ground. Consider offering a variety of hors d’oeuvres and finger foods, or serving a buffet of family-style favorites. You could even have a late-night, dessert-only reception featuring pies, pastries, cookies or even donuts. See page 45 for a list of questions to ask prospective caterers or bakeries.

The ceremony makes it official, but the reception is where your friends and family gather to wish you well as your married life begins. Make it a reflection of your interests, personality and style, and show your guests a great time while you’re at it.

If an open bar is out of your budget, consider serving just one or two signature cocktails along with wine and beer. Search for a recipe that works with your wedding’s tone – matrimonial Mai Tais for a beachy affair or spiked spiced cider for a white winter wedding.

Cutting the cake is a highlight of the reception. If you’ve chosen a nontraditional dessert like cupcakes or pie, most bakers will provide a small, special cake for the tradi-tional first cut.

If you’d like family members

or specific friends to give

toasts, be sure to ask them

well in advance.

From classic books to Christmas ornaments,

virtually anything can serve as a centerpiece.

after the main event

Your guests have left, the champagne is flat and a stack of thank you cards is staring you down. The wedding is over, and now your marriage begins. But what do you do next?

You might be jetting off for a honey-moon adventure. You might be heading home, ready to start saving for your delayed wedding trip. You might have chosen a “mini-moon” – a getaway as short as a weekend and as close as your own backyard.

Before you can take your first steps as a married couple, recognize all the people who made your wedding day a success. Gifts for the wedding party are optional, but they are a sweet acknowl-edgment of their time and effort.

Thank you cards, on the other hand, are a must. A handwritten note of thanks – sent promptly – shows that you truly appreciate your family and friends’ well wishes on your wedding day.

The average couple spends somewhere around $25,000 on their wedding – even before factoring in the engage-ment ring or honeymoon.

Whether you’re planning an intimate wedding or a more lavish affair, one of your first steps in planning your wed-ding should be to set up – and stick to – a basic budget.

Traditionally the bride’s family pays for the whole shebang. Today, however, it’s common for the groom’s family to

contribute as well, or for the couple to fund the wedding on their own.

Though your families may elect to help you out, they are in no way obli-gated to do so. When your engagement is announced, have that conversation with your family and your future in-laws so you can budget accordingly.

Expect to spend about half of your budget on the reception (including the venue and catering) and about ten percent each on clothes, flowers, entertainment and photography, with the remainder going toward invitations, wedding rings, transportation and gifts.

To keep from breaking the bank (after all, who wants to start a marriage tens of thousands of dollars in debt?), make sure you and your partner agree on your priorities before committing to anything. Building in a 5 percent cush-ion just in case will also save your sanity when the actual costs inevitably come in a little higher than expected.

Budgeting is easiest if you have clear priorities.

When you’ve decided

on your must-haves,

cutting the other costs

becomes a snap.

The best-laid plans of mice and men (and brides) often go awry, but that’s no reason to throw planning out the window. If you spend the time early on to lay out details and set in place backup plans, when the inevitable setback occurs you’ll be able to take it in stride.

In the next section you’ll find check-lists, a budget worksheet and suggested questions to ask prospective wedding vendors. This is your copy of Pacific Coast Weddings, so mark it up, take notes and scribble ideas in the margins. And re-member that all of these worksheets are available at PacificCoastWeddings.info!

If you’re going to be making the rounds of local bridal shows, make the most of every one! Bridal shows are a great source of information to help you plan your wedding. Wedding professionals in all specialties display their work so you can get a taste of what they offer and if it works with your style.

register early. Buying your tickets online can sometimes mean a discount, and you’ll also face less of a wait at the registration desk. Register-ing early can also yield perks, like an extra entry into the raffle or money-saving coupons.

dress comfortably. Seeing everyone at the show will take time, and you’ll be on your feet most of the day. Walk down every aisle and collect all the information you can. And pack light – you’ll be adding to your load with every stop.

bring address labels or business cards. Many vendors have table drawings, and preprinted cards will save you from writing your name and contact information over and over again. Be sure to include your email address and wedding date, if you’ve set it.

take notes and ask questions. Jot your thoughts on the back of the vendor’s business card, or mark the cards of vendors you preferred with a star. You can also take quick photos of styles or ideas you particularly like, but make sure to ask the vendor first.

pack your checkbook or credit card. When you find the right wedding professional, you want to reserve their services right away, and many require a deposit.

make the most of every show
