A Beginning . . ."Noth ing ever built arose to touch the skies unless some man dreamed tha t it should, some man believed
tha t it could, and some man willed that it must.'1
These are the words of Charles F. Kettering, who, although his engineering brilliance revolutionized the auto
motive industry, was, throughout his life tim e of dedicated purpose, p rim arily concerned and interested in edu
cation. In every way he could he aided it and guided it toward a goal o f preparing young men and women to
meet and solve problems.
It was only natural, then, that, a t the time Eugene Kettering made the decision to build the Charles F. Kettering
Memorial Hospital in memory of his father, p lans'for an educational center began to be studied. M r. Kettering
set aside thirty-five acres of the fam ily estate fo r the proposed medical center campus.
In September, 1967, hundreds witnessed the dedication o f a new institution, Kettering College o f Medical
A rts— the second phase of the Kettering Medical Center's three divisions— clinical, educational, and research.
A t this time the college also opened its doors to one hundred freshman students. The student body, a t first
representing principally the residents of nearby O h io communities, has grown to include students from twenty-
five states and provinces as the first graduates complete the ir educational program two years later.
Kettering College of Medical A rts is a Christian educational institution operated by the Seventh-day A d
ventist, and holds as a supreme objective the providing of an environment in which teachers and students can
search out and know S o d the C rea to r as He is revealed in inspiration, in the physical world around us, and in
the events of this world's history.

We Dedicate . . .
The students of the Kettering College of Medical
A rts dedicate the ir first yearbook to Mrs. Eugene
W . Kettering and the late M r. Kettering.
W h ile planning the educational division o f the
Kettering Medical Center, M r. Kettering explained,
" I t must be an educational center as well as a
medical service center. It will be necessary fo r the
hospital to become involved in preparing young
people fo r satisfying lives of service here and in
other institutions in various parts of the world."
W e, the students, express our thanks to the
Ketterings fo r this fine institution, and are proud to
be members o f the educational division tha t the
Ketterings have established.

Dean of the College
I would say to our students, especially to those who a,re graduating, th a t you have come upon the scene
in a day of great opportunities. You must choose between the opportunities offered by the M aste r fo r service
to H im and the opportunities offered by the world fo r g rea t gain and popularity. Yes, the opportunities for
worldly gain, world ly pleasure, and world ly popu larity are set before you in all the ir dazzling splendor, but
Christ says, Forsake all o f these things and take up your cross and follow me if you would have true success
and inherit eternal life.
You are the children o f destiny. You have come upon the scene of action in one of the most momentous
times of earth's history. This is a tim e o f fast moving events, and you will be playing an im portant part in
the shaping of earth's destiny. You have studied fa ith fu lly and are well prepared to act your part upon the
stage o f life. You are especially tra ined in medical lines and are fu lly prepared to m inister to suffering human
ity like our M aster did.
As the signals are given, "O n your mark, get set," and the starter's gun
barks, le t everyone be up and away. Keep your eye upon the finish line,
strain every muscle, exert every energy, tax every capacity as you run
the race of life. W hen you come to the end of the race may each one
be able to say with the apostle Paul, "I have fought a good fight, I
have finished my course, I have kept the fa ith ."

Solemness reigned a t the first capping ceremony of the Kettering

five rules. "Be true to yourself, cultivate the best in life, think, work,
pray and keep your desire single. If you are hitting on all five, success
will be yours." The ceremony ended with an impressive lamp lighting
ceremony by the students. The lit lamps signified a new way of life, a
