Artist statement
In their artistic work Joran Yonis attempts to deconstruct the construct of the binarity of gender and to uncover, visualize and change the forms of marginalization and discrimination. Joran Yonis`s art is always political – they want to stimulate reflection, questioning, pausing and action. The works sometimes want to confuse, always change, provoke, make visible, empower and take a stand. With their work social norms are questioned – sometimes loudly, sometimes quietly. They al-ways want to engange with the viewer, create an echo in them, trigger something in them. They are often provocative, but
always thoughtful.
ἀσθένημαThe performance ἀσθένημα (2018) is about power and power-lessness. The visitors are confronted with their own fear and the consequences of their powerlessness which is triggered by the situation of the unknown. In this situation visitors must behave and make decisions about their actions or inactions.
Thereby they become performers themselves.

ξένοςThe unknown has a fascinating and terrifyingly repulsive effect on hu-mans. By encountering the unknown one becomes aware of one‘s own ot-herness in oneself and the other. One reacts with demarcation and hatred. There is a chance in the realization of fear as one‘s own creation. The performance ξένος (2018) intervenes in the dialogue between fear of the unknown and its emerging which is created by oneself. The perfor-mance aims to make the viewer reflect on their own fear. In reflection it wants to take the fear of the unknown and oppose hatred with openness and appreciative tolerance. o.T.
The performance o.T. (2018) deals with the interior and the exterior, the outsiders and the insiders, the produ-cers and the consumers, the artists and their art. The art is not exhibited here but the artists themselves are. Like in a shop window the artists are presented, they are raised to the artwork itself and devalued at the same time like merchandise.
Only a thin pane of glass separates the visitors from the objects of interest. At the moment of eye contact the visitors and the artists enter a re-ciprocal relationship. This contact initiates the negotiation of a new space, a relational space in which all participants have to behave, towards others and towards themselves. In the unknown
counterpart they encounter their own.

ῥύ*σις IIῥύ*σις II (2017) is a queer*feminist live perfor-mance that aims to destroy the construct of the
binarity of gender.
The viewers are confronted with aesthetic and existentially disturbing images at the same time. The performance plays with the limits of binarity; blurs them, destroys them, blows them away until they disappear. Restrict from social norms the performer trys to free themself. The artist demands the audience to
act – to relate to them. They are confronted with the situation. By doing so, the performance doesn`t want to disturb but to raise awareness, to wake up, to make visible. The performance wants to give the invisible the chance to be seen, it deals with the person as a human beeing. Identity is the matter of concern, it doesn`t want to create categories but to tear apart the
construction of binarity.

major minorityRigid looks. Disgusted warped mouths. In-comprehension coupled with scum and exo-ticization. In the work major minority (2018), the attri-bution against the unknown, the ambiguous – those who do not conform to the norm – is driven to the extreme.
In reflective glances, visitors become aware of their own strangeness and are prompt to question their world view. Low and high values are renego-tiated, normative thinking is called into question.

By interacting with the towels, the visitors become performers. By acquiring a towel, the perfor-mance is led beyond the exhibi-tion space into the public space. The visitor now performs with the artwork in a swimming pool, on the beach, in a sauna, in a ba-
throom.

in_different The interactive room installation in_different (2019) deals with the deconstruction of gen-der and socio-political issues. Gendertrouble becomes a game of the moment. Conceptu-ally, a dialogue develops between the known and the unknown, between the inside and the outside, the visitors and the marginalized.
