  • A P-40E-1, s/n 41-36402, flown by Lt. Dallas Adellon Clinger,16th FS, 23rd FG, China, January 1943 Having completed his pilot training in the summer 1941 and following deployment to the Asian battlefield Lt. Clinger became the member of the 16th FS which in the summer of 1942 received their Curtiss P-40E. He achieved his first air combat victory on July 31st, 1942 (A6M) followed by the kill of the same kind of opponent scored on November 12th. His last kill with 16th FS was another Japanese Zero claimed on December 26th, 1942. During World War II Dallas Clinger claimed 5 confirmed Zero fighter kills and 3 probable kills. Even though the Warhawks original destination was African theatre of operations their camouflage was painted in American paints like the British shades of Dark Earth, Dark Green and Sky. The camouflage was touched up on the fuselage sides and tail surfaces with black-green paint, the fuselage repair is probably related to the non-standard marking size on the port side. Pilot’s personal marking - urinating cowboy - was painted on both sides of the rudder. 16th FS aircraft had the wheel hubs decorated in blue color with white stars sporting red circle in the center. This red circle is not visible in the aircraft photograph. The red propeller spinner on the 16th FS airplanes is unusual.

  • B P-40E Kittyhawk, Major Alexandr Andrejevich Matveev, CO of 154th IAP, Leningrad area, Summer 1942 A. A. Matveev, participant of the air battles at Khalkhin-Gol and Winter War with Finland, was promoted to the commander of 154th IAP on November 11th, 1941. At that time the unit began the transfer to the American Curtiss Tomahawk fighters. Curtiss aircraft deployment in the harsh weather conditions in the country’s North was not trouble-free. Thanks to Matveev’s energetic leadership though the problems were quickly overcome, and the unit started to fly sorties as early as December 1941. During the winter 1942 the unit equipment was gradually supplemented by new P-40E Kittyhawk however as early as spring 1942 many aircraft were grounded due to the lack of spare engines. Situation was solved thanks to agile Matveev and Col.Malikov who proposed to replace short-in-supply Allison engines by the Soviet-made M-105s. Maj.Matveev flew P-40E nr.65 during the summer 1942. Kill markings featured on the fuselage side of his fighter were decals and did not correspond to his personal score. According to Matveev’s recollections these decals were applied to his aircraft for propaganda purposes. Alexander Matveev’s final score in World War II was 14 kills, half of them achieved in cooperation with other pilots.

C Flown by Lt. Eduard Kleinkönnig, JG 9, Kolguyev Island, 1946 (Fictional)

    © EDUARD M.A. 2019 www.eduard.com Printed in Czech Republic

P-40E coded '59' was discovered by members of JG 9 preserved in ice on one of the Kolguyev Island plains. The method by which the aircraft got on the island, and under what circumstances, are a matter of speculation. Not even the locals were able to shed any light on the mystery. The assumption that the aircraft was a Kittyhawk of the Northern Fleet, who's pilot became disoriented and bellied in along the beach of the island, sucking the last of his fumes out of his empty tanks, is a good one. If the landing didn't kill him, surely the carnivorous penguins of the island did. Later, the aircraft was transported to the JG 9 airfield, and brought to airworthy status, and was used on harassment raids against said penguins. For a more effective appearance for this role, Lt. Kleinkönnig had his aircraft adorned with the skull of a rabbit and crossed carrots. The mission markings behind the cockpit, according to Kleinkönig's memoirs, denoted successful anti-penguin patrols, the yellow markings designated yolky-palky attacks, and the red symbolized successful napalm 'rings of fire'.
