Take Time To Take it In“They grow up so fast.” “It goes by in a blink of any eye.” “It seems like only yesterday.” All cliches that we use because, well, time really does fly by and the kids really do grow up so fast. As parents, friends, and neighbors we all have one common connection. We want to make the most of our time. Work, sports, homework, civic groups - there are only so many hours in the day (another true cliche) to fit it all in. But, where do you fit into your schedule?
Psychologists advocate that taking even a little downtime (10 minutes!) for your self, family, or friends makes you happier and able to navigate conversations and life with a better mind-set. Taking time to yourself has been proven to relieve anxieties, help you become less dependent on others, slow you down, and it’s even proven to be a money saver! Stark Parks and trails offer exploration, adventure, and relaxation with some
pretty cool scenery. From a solo run to a family picnic or even just listening to the birds chatter for a few moments, you can find a Stark Park nearby. While we can’t convince everyone to take a well-deserved break, we can provide plenty of places and opportunities to step away for a few minutes, or even hours. We encourage you to Take Time to Take it in!
People all over Stark County are Taking Time for Parks - and they’re sharing how! #timeforparks
Take Time with the Mindfulness Walk at Petros Lake Park In partnership with Stark Mental Health and Addiction Recovery (MHAR), Stark Parks has created a Mindfulness Walk at Petros Lake Park in Perry Township. A wonderful way to take it all in, this walk consists of ten stations, each designed to help users be aware of their senses and the surrounding natural environment in a more conscious way. You’re invited to join Stark Parks and Stark MHAR at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 1 - National Trails Day - to celebrate the official grand opening of the Mindfulness Walk! Following a ribbon cutting ceremony, staff will guide visitors through the walk and several fun and relaxing activities. Make your own stress ball, sign the wall of affirmation, experience a Zen sand garden, a labyrinth, and more!

Deer Creek Reservoir (Alliance)In close cooperation with the City of Alliance, the boat ramp was successfully
installed over the winter. Next steps include upgrading and reconfiguring the parking lot to better accommodate boats. Future plans include repairs to the fishing dock and an accessible kayak and canoe launch. In the meantime, the sandy area to the north of the ramp can be used to launch small watercraft.
Fry Family Park (Magnolia)Final touches are being wrapped up inside the Fry Family Park Visitor Center, and plans are underway to move into the site work phase of the project. Stark Parks crews will be working on the demolition of the
pool and putting down the base for the parking lot and bio-retention swales. A water line is
being installed this summer which will provide water to the barn, visitor center, and shelter.
Magnolia Flouring MillsThe first phase of restoration at the mill is complete and included a roof replacement, new coat of paint, foundation repairs, and electrical upgrades. 100% of the funding from this grant came from state capital funding. The second phase of the work, also funded through the state, will include a parking lot design to improve flow for vehicles and visitors to the mill as well as an analysis and purpose for the other out-buildings.
Tam O’Shanter Park (Jackson Twp.)The master planning process for the park has been moving along. The first public meeting was attended by over 100 patrons, and an additional 200 shared comments online and on paper. At the second public meeting, consultants and park staff reviewed general concepts being developed based on public comments. The final plan will be complete mid-summer when it will be voted on by the board of commissioners and after approval, will be available at StarkParks.com.
Iron Horse Trail (Alliance)Tree work began on the final leg of the Iron Horse Trail in March to clear the way for the installation of a ten-foot-wide limestone trail that will connect the existing portion of the Iron Horse Trail that ends just south of the University of Mount Union campus, to the Mahoning Valley Trail. The connection is expected to be complete late fall of 2019.
Jackson Connector Trail TunnelStark Parks received a transportation grant for the installation of a pedestrian tunnel under Fulton Road. The purpose of this connection would be to provide a more suitable pedestrian connection between Jackson’s North Park complex, amphitheater, and the Stark Library Jackson Branch with South Park, the Jackson Bog, and Jackson High School on the south side of Fulton Road. This ODOT project is currently slated for construction in 2021.
Parkwide Reminders - Share the Trails Trail users may notice new 15 mph speed limit signs along trails. Due to changes in legislation, Stark Parks is creating a pilot program, allowing class 1 e-bikes on Stark Park Trails.
As the weather warms, more people will start using the trail again. Here are a few simple reminders to make everyone’s experience enjoyable:
• Ride and walk single file and do not block the trail• Slow down• Be aware and cautious of wildlife
• Stay on park property • Practice “petiquette”• Give audible warning before

Hanging out with one of our patients - and her babies!
This past winter, the Wildlife Conservation Center took in a female bat found inside a home. Due to the lack of food and shelter that the winter months bring (bats typically hibernate),
she couldn’t be released until spring. During her time at the Center, she surprised staff with two
adorable babies (pictured here) in March!
Bats mate in the fall and the embryos go into hibernation with their mom until late spring, when food is plentiful. Since this mom didn’t hibernate, her babies were born early. Both babies were fully grown
and spring bugs were plentiful before all three were released together!

From Ranger Cadet to Park RangerThe Stark Parks Ranger Cadet program offers young men and women the opportunity to explore parks, trails, and lakes from the perspective of a Ranger. Cadets experience real-life situations related to wildlife laws, natural resource enforcement, and public safety. In 2016, Thomas Koontz II joined the Ranger Cadet program while attending the University of Akron. Thomas connected so well with Stark Parks and his law enforcement role that he moved his academic focus from environmental Science to Criminal Justice Technology. In April, he was hired upon graduation from the police academy as the newest Stark Parks Ranger, and his brother Jared joined the Ranger Cadet program in 2018!
