A performance of new & traditional broadside ballads about the 19th Century Irish­American gang leader & squatter colony chief. Known for his "caustic tongue and ready wit," he was often stereotyped tabloid fodder for the newspapers of the 1800s. If you've ever seen the movie Gangs of New York, then this would be a musical accompaniment to the rogues, pimps, murderers, and thieves that inhabited New York City in the 19th century. 6th Annual Woody Guthrie Brooklyn Hoot, Sun., Nov. 18th, 4-6 pmTwo­hour round robin songfest featuring Vincent Cross, Emma Graves, Beth Kotkin, Joel Landy, Nancy Moccaldi, and Steve Suffet, all performing songs that former Brooklyn resident Woody Guthrie sang. Geoff Kaufman: Concert, Friday, November 30th, 7:30pm; Workshop, Saturday., December 1st, 2-4pm

Geoff sings songs of the sea, songs of the earth, songs of the heart and the spirit. Ancient ballads, work songs, and songs of love; poignant songs of people in struggle, humorous glimpses of human foibles, and insights into history — all of these are likely to be woven into Geoff's work. Above all, at the core of Geoff's performance is his rich tenor voice and an exuberant love of singing. And part of that love is to entice audiences to sing along, to share in the exhilaration of full­throated vocalization if they wish. In this age of electronic overload and passive media pablum, Geoff likes to stress the "live" in live performance, promoting participation, be it by voice or heart or mind. Workshop (Saturday): Exploring the African/African American roots of sea chanteys. Building upon the recent publication of Gibb Schreffler’s book Boxing the Compass, Geoff will delve into the idea that the singing of chanteys on deep water ships developed from black sailors bringing aboard their tradition of call and response music. Gail Levine­Fried, longtime FMSNY Club member (since 1968), was recently registered as a "Marriage Officiant" (valid for NYC) at the Office of the City Clerk. Gail completed Advanced level of Training in REIKI, a therapeutic modality, non­manipulative method of natural energy work (International School of REIKI, Loving Touch Center) and was ordained as a "Minister of Spiritual Healing" in February, 2017. Gail is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT, Yoga Alliance) and also teaches Chair Yoga at Kingsborough Community College in Brooklyn and a Gentle Hatha mat Yoga class, privately. On Oct. 27th, Gail will be inducted into New York University's "Perstare Society" in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of her graduation from NYU's Washington Square College (now the College of Arts and Sciences) in 1968. She also holds Masters and Doctoral degrees from NYU.

This summer, Harvey Cort was a gracious (although reluctant) host to a pigeon. Beaky Cort­Lipman, a good­looking chick, was hatched on Harvey’s terrace in July and finally left in late September. We witnessed the takeoff, a Hitchcockesque event where about a dozen pigeons lined up on the terrace railing with Beaky, who then flew away. The others lingered, evidently eyeing the accommodations. We informed them that this is NOT an “Air” bnb!

November means that fall is really here. Just the right time for music!! Actually anytime is the right time.

Our usual events are occurring: the Irish Traditional Music Sessions, the Sunnyside Singers Club, the Upper West Side Song Swap, the Folk Open Sing, and the Shanty Sing. Always good times for everyone. In addition, at the People’s voice, Magpie + Ivy & Miranda will be appearing. Matthew Byrne and Geoff Kaufman will be appearing in concert, with both events at OSA. In addition, Geoff will give a workshop the day after his concert on “Exploring the African/African American roots of sea chanteys”. Vincent Cross will be presenting the “Life and times of James “the Rooster” Corcoran” in music and there will be the Sixth Annual Woody Guthrie Brooklyn Hoot.

What a great way to spend November. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
