zPresident’s MessageSean Ryan

It is no secret that I love living in Owl Creek, the neighborhood is great and the people here are the best. Summer is in full swing, the Owl Creek Predators swim team is back to back division 2 champions. Does it get any better than that? I would argue heck no! The Board appreciates all of the help we received in solving the pool vandalism issue. It turned out the culprits were four teenagers from a nearby neighborhood. LMPD has been involved and the individuals are being prosecuted. An unfortunate event like this can help us all become more vigilant in observing and dealing with our community and neighborhood assets. The campsites have been reserved for our annual pilgrimage up to Patoka Lake September 23-25. It will once again be a great time for all the kiddos and I am sure the Dads will be ok too.

We will eagerly await our 5th annual Oktoberfest this fall as well; mark your calendar for October 15th. Let’s all enjoy the last bit of summer before school starts and things get hectic. Take a moment and help a neighbor with a task small or large, by you helping someone else Owl Creek will remain the envy of all of Louisville. See you around the neighborhood,

Sean

Yard of the Month (YOM)– August Kristen Pawlak, [email protected]

Our August Yard of the Month recipient:Bill & Joan Brown of 10909 Hobbs Station Road

The Browns have lived in Owl Creek since 2002 and when they first moved in, much of their yard was dying. As a result they have been redesigning and planting their yard with the help of Bob Osborne from Earl Thieneman Nursery. However, Bill and his son maintain and mow the yard.

The array of flower color was noted by the YOM committee. Joan said her favorite part of the yard is the black-eyed Susans by their post, especially when in full bloom. Their addition was a design choice Joan requested after admiring another OCC yard on her neighborhood walks.

The Browns are pleased with their back yard planting of hydrangeas and future plans are for continued work in the back. They may possibly add a couple of trees since so many were lost over the years due to storm damage.

Congratulations to the Browns on their beautiful yard!

We urge everyone to take advantage of the OWL CREEK WEBSITE for upcoming events, RSVP’s, registrations, forms, preferred vendors and much much more!! It is a convenience at your fingertips to stay involved and up to date within the community!! To log in to the website: www.owlcreekcommunity.com, USER ID is the lot number plus the first 3 letters of resident’s last name (remember to capitalize the 1st letter); PASSWORD is the street address completely spelled out including spaces. HELPING HANDSBonnie Chiarot

Helping Hands friends!

This is a test… This is only a test… I would like to know if you would like Helping Hands to continue in its present form, change its status, or disband altogether. Personally, I would really like to see it continue, but I can’t do it alone; nor do I want to. I also personally believe that the Helping Hands community is one of the best things about Owl Creek, but I have to be honest; whereas I formerly mentioned a need and saw it met in the blink of an eye, I now feel as if I must play the role of cheerleader in order to assemble enough help.

So, this is why I ask you, the people who serve and are served by Helping Hands, to let me know if you think it’s time to throw in the towel or it’s time to eat a protein bar and soldier on. I accepted this position to serve you, and I want to do so in the best way possible.

Thanks, Bonnie Chiarot ~ If you need a helping hand, please call, text, or email me at 693-8879 or [email protected] or call Karessa at the Lodge.

BOOK CLUB NEWSRita ErnstWednesday, Aug 24 @ 6:30pm ~ Poolside

The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy FowlerIn California’s central valley, five women and one man join to discuss Jane Austen’s novels. Over the six months they get together, marriages are tested, affairs begin, unsuitable arrangements become suitable, and love happens. With her eye for the frailties of human behavior and her ear for the absurdities of social intercourse, Karen Joy Fowler has never been wittier nor her characters more appealing. The result is a delicious dissection of modern relationships. Dedicated Austenites will delight in unearthing the echoes of Austen that run through the novel, but most readers will simply enjoy the vision and voice that, despite two centuries of separation, unite two great writers of brilliant social comedy.

Men’s BasketballPick-up Games

We offer an evening of “open gym men’s basketball” for OC residents. Join us on periodic weekday evenings from 9-10:30pm. If you are interested, please email Justin at [email protected] or Justin Blanford at [email protected] to be added to his email distribution list.

OWL CREEK POOL SAFETY AND OPERATIONS:Parents (or a designated responsible person) must be in close proximity to children under 12. If they use personal flotation devices and/or cannot swim, this means being in the water by them or close to the edge of the pool. The more crowded the pool, the more important this becomes. If a lifeguard determines that a child is struggling or is potentially at risk, they will let you know more attention is needed or require the child to get out of the water.

We allow flotation mats and toys when the pool is not crowded. On busy days, the guards will make a call when it is time to stop using these devices.

Food must remain at least 6 feet away from the pool edge. Drinks are allowed up to the pool edge but not in the pool (for example a person sitting on the edge of the pool with their feet in the water can have a drink in hand but a person in the pool by the edge cannot have a drink in hand).

Trash & Cleanup: Please be respectful of guests who will use the tables and chairs after you and place your trash in the containers. If needed, the guards have clean up towels and cleaning spray at the entrance to the pool. Please also use appropriate containers for recycle.

Walk don’t run: We are all about safety and hope you will keep that in mind by always walking within the pool area. This will help prevent slips, falls and bumping into others.

Diving Board Rules: Forward and backward flips, dives and jumps are allowed off the Owl Creek pool diving board. However, at all times the momentum of the dive must be away from the board. No reverse movements, back toward the diving board, are allowed at any time.

Only one (1) person is allowed on the diving board at a time.

Look before diving or jumping to make sure no one is in the diving area.

Only one (1) bounce is allowed on the diving board

Swim immediately to the closest ladder or wall.

Flotation devices such as “water wings,” lifejackets, or other Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs,) are not allowed to be used when jumping off the diving board. The only exception is the use of a fully enclosed PFD under the strict supervision of a NEARBY PARENT, to assist with the confidence of children that are learning to swim. If possible, the above mentioned exception should be United States Coast Guard approved.

Dive only when supervised by a lifeguard, swimming instructor, or coach.

SIGN-IN & GUEST FEES:Yes! Everyone must sign-in at the gate and show ID. Acceptable ID’s are driver’s license with OC address or an OC ID card. Children under 12 must be with responsible adult/babysitter.

Helpful Pool ID Tip: Take a picture of your DL or ID and save on your phone so you will always have with you to show the Guards!

Sitter passes (free) and out-of-town visitor passes ($5/week) are available from Karessa or Barb at the Lodge. Immediate family (parents, grandparents, children & grandchildren) are not charged a fee when accompanied by a resident. All other relatives must pay the $3 guest fee at the sign-in table; Punch cards available for $12 at the gate (good for 5 guests, no expiration date).

SNACK BAR:The snack bar serves drinks and snacks 12pm - 8pm during the week & Sundays from 12:30 to 6pm.

You may charge your purchases to your lot or pay cash. If you want to block your account from charges, please tell the office or snack bar attendants. Alex, Claire & Katie are in the snack bar this year. They process charge slips daily & send out a statement at the end of the month if you have charges of $10 or more. A quarterly statement is mailed if the total charges are less than $10. Payment is due by the end of the month and a $25 late is charged after that date. We do offer the option of ACH payment, where your account is set up for automatic withdrawal; a monthly statement will be emailed to you prior to withdrawal. Contact Barb for more details.

Landscape ChairJim Julian sNew Landscape Maintenance Company:The change to Browning Landscape has taken hold and they now seem to have a handle on the mowing and weed control needs of our common areas. The wet spring and early summer presented a challenge as it seemed the grass needed cutting every other day. But with summer settling in, they have been able to take care of mowing as well as other concerns such as maintaining the flower beds and irrigation repairs.

The flower bed plantings are filling in nicely. As mentioned previously, this year is a test year for new plantings so we can see how things look and find out what will survive in our flower beds. In all, the plants have done well and we have had may compliments on them. So, I am already thinking of ways to enhance the look next year through planting design and larger plantings. With regard to the irrigation system, Browning has also been able to fix several irrigation leaks as we work to maintain our aging system in proper working order.

All in all, I think the transition in landscape companies has enhanced our community and we will continue to work closely with them to make sure our needs, as well as your concerns, are addressed.

Street Island and Perimeter Fence Maintenance:As summer turns to fall, we also have to begin plans for the rejuvenation of a couple more street islands. Every year we budget funds to address 2 or 3 islands that need attention. The makeover is usually in the fall as most of the islands are not irrigated. Over the next month or so, we will be reviewing islands in the many cul-de-sacs of Owl Creek to determine which are in the worst shape and need a redesign of the landscape. At the same time, we will be planning to plant trees in several of the islands to fill the bare spaces left when trees were removed in the past.

We have completed the repair of 75 fence sections along Ward. There are, however,

several sections that still just need to be cleaned and painted and we are looking for a contractor to address those sections. We are also working with Raatz Fence to repair additional fence sections along Dorsey Lane from Ward to Hobbs Station Rd (the main entrance to Owl Creek) as there are about 55 sections along Dorsey Lane we hope to repair in the current budget cycle. We should be able to complete the fence repairs from Hobbs Station Rd, north along Dorsey Lane, to the

end of our fence in the next budget cycle.

New Projects:It was recently brought to our (the Board’s) attention that several residents had concerns regarding the potential long-term health impacts of the rubber mulch currently used to prevent falling injury at the playground. After some additional research, even though the current mulch is deemed safe by EPA, the Board decided the concerns were sufficient to merit the replacement of the rubber mulch with a wood mulch product with fewer health concerns. We have collected bids on the project and hope to have it completed by the fall.

Lastly and perhaps most ambitious, for several months we have been working to get a surveyor to establish the property line of our property on the west end of the track and soccer field. Many of you may have recently seen the stakes marking the boundary. My desire is to, over time, clear all the bushes and debris from that corner so we can either convert it to open green space or perhaps someday develop an additional play area. There are no plans for the area yet, other than cleaning it up, with the aim of eliminating the hideout/hangout for what, I assume, are a lot of partiers, given all the beer cans and liquor bottles. So, over the next few months I will be removing trees, bushes, and debris to see if any existing plant material (trees etc) is worth saving as we begin a slow process of reclaiming that portion of Owl Creek.

Did you know?Residents are responsible for trimmimg the trees and shrubs that overhang the sidewalk so neighbors can walk by safely.

Dad and Kids CampoutSet for September 23-25

It’s almost that time of year again. Every fall, the dads pack up the kids, gear and supplies and head out for a weekend of camping and fun. This year we will again return to Patoka Lake State Park. There will be prepared group meals Friday for dinner and Saturday and Sunday mornings for breakfast. We have scheduled lots of games for the kids, a group hike and on Saturday night, a big bonfire with a story teller. This event gets bigger every year, and even if you don’t think you’re the camping type, this is the one to try!

If you are interested in helping plan, we are always ready to welcome volunteers to assist with the following:

Communication and RegistrationLogistics – supplies, trailers, transportation

Set up and take down of food pavilionCoordinate the preparation & serving foodKid’s Activities: Hiking, Games, Scavenger

Hunt and Bonfire

There will be information provided at a later date as well as website sign-ups for your volunteer activities. If possible, please consider taking the Friday of campout weekend off and coming up early to help set up the main tent area. It is a big task and we will need your help!

The registration form can be found on the Owl Creek website or at the Lodge. Reminder: Patoka Lake State Park does not allow us to bring in our own firewood. We will contract a local supplier to bring in firewood that we will sell on site or you can buy from the state park.

In order to keep delivering a great experience for everyone, we need your support, so please contact one of us and offer to volunteer.

We are still adding more vendors, so, if you don’t see what you are looking for, please contact Karessa at the Lodge. We always appreciate referrals from our residents who have had great success with a vendor. Let us know your fabulous vendors so we can inform all neighbors!

ATTENTION CHILDREN & ADULT BIKE RIDERS, WALKERS, ETC:

Please be mindful of cars when using the streets in Owl Creek. No mopeds on the sidewalks! We have received several reports of close calls! And, drivers, please be mindful of the speed limit and stop signs. Summer and nice weather bring about more outdoor play. Be smart, be safe.

Golf OutingThe 6th Annual Owl Creek Golf Tournament was held on June 17th at Glen Oaks Country Club to raise money for the Owl Creek Swim Team. For the third year in a row, we had to turn some people away because we maxed out our registrations. The day started out absolutely perfect and we were able to have a great tournament.

We had some great prizes this year. We had a longest drive contest and a closest to the pin contest. We also had four hole-in-one contests for various prizes. Sadly, no one won the car from “Bob Cook Chevrolet” – maybe next year.

We actually had two winning foursomes this year. We had a men’s winning foursome and a ladies winning foursome. The men’s foursome with a lowest score of 57 was the team of Craig Leis, Josh Weber, Dave McCauley and Cary McKiernan. The winning and first ever ladies champions was the foursome of Angie Morrison, Leah Rauluy, Erin Reed and Dana Moore. Congrats to both teams!!! After the Tournament, many other prizes were awarded while we enjoyed another wonderful meal by Karem’s Catering.

Thanks to all who played, helped and supported the tournament. We would like to especially thank our sponsors, without which, none of this would be possible. Special thanks to Gene Snowden for all his hard work behind the scenes, especially with coordinating the sponsors, and to the Lodge office staff for their help behind the scenes.

We have already started planning next year and promise to have some new twists to keep it fresh. Hope to see you there.

SAFETY TIPSChief Jeffrey J. Riddle

Recreational Fires: It is that time of year when everyone enjoys a camp/recreational fire. The following are the rules and frequently asked questions:

Are camp/recreational fires allowed? Yes they are allowed; depending on the kind of fire you want. A permit may be required.

What types of fires don’t need a permit? If you are grilling or cooking food for non-commercial purposes, and the fire is the appropriate size for what you are cooking, you will not need a permit. Recreational fires in a fire pit or outdoor fireplace do not require permits if they fall within the size requirements. Fires can be no larger than 3ft wide and 3ft tall. Any other kind or size of recreational fire will require a permit.

How do I get a permit? Permit applications are available online or can be faxed or mailed to you. Call 574-6000 and ask for the compliance section.

What is an approved fire pit? A fire pit is a device built or manufactured for small recreational fires. A portable, above ground fire pit should be commercially manufactured and should be assembled and used according to manufactures instructions. A permanently constructed fire pit or fireplace must be constructed or completely lined with a non-combustible material such as brick, rock, concrete, or heavy gauged metal.

Fire pits should only be used under adult supervision and not during extremely dry or windy conditions. For more info on fire pits or what is allowed, go to www.louisvilleky.gov and search for fire pits.
