SAMUELI SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING BY THE NUMBERS
• Founded in 1965, The Samueli School of Engineering is one of the nation’s fastest growing programs.
• Undergraduate program ranked in top 50 out of 300 engineering programs.
• Grad program is ranked 38th.• 5 departments, 12 majors including CSE• 10 faculty members elected to National Academies• More than 1/3 of faculty are fellows in professional
societies• 3,119 undergraduate students, 898 graduate students
EXAMPLES OF RESEARCH AREAS
• Water resources• Center for Hydrometerology and Remote Sensing• Urban Water Resource Center
• Energy• The National Fuel Cell Research Center• UCI Combustion Laboratory
• Biomedical Engineering• Beckman Laser Institute• The Edwards Lifesciences Center for Advanced Cardiovascular
Technology• Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center
• Plus 10 other research centers and 40 additional individual research groups
COURSES ARE TAUGHT BY TOP RESEARCHERS
Dr. Michelle Khine
Inventor of microfluidic technologies for biomedical applications
Dr. Bob Liebeck
Boeing Senior Fellow Father of Blended Wing Body Airplane
TEACHING APPROACH
• Initially, classes are large (lower division)• Upper division courses become smaller
and more interactive• Year long senior design courses• Projects such as cargo airplane, steel bridge
• Interaction with faculty is a hallmark of smaller classes
• A blend of fundamentals, research and hands-on experience.
EXCELLENT CONNECTIONS WITH INDUSTRY
PRACTICAL DESIGN OPPORTUNITIES
• Students are encouraged to participate in research and hands-on engineering design opportunities to develop practical skills needed for graduate study or employment.
• Some examples of ways to participate:• Senior design projects• UROP and Independent Studies• Engineering design competitions
COMMUNICATION & TEAMWORK
STUDENT INVOLVEMENT• Engineering Student Council (ESC)
• Discover Research• Engineers week• E-Prom
• Engineers Without Borders (EWB)• American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)• Society of Women Engineers (SWE)• American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)• Mexican American Engineers and Scientists (MAES)• National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)• Honors Societies• And many more!
