For decades the automating of material handling systems has contributed to an increase of the production workflow efficiency. Forklifts, tow trucks and conveyors allow a large amount of material transportation. However these systems bear some intrinsic disadvantages; they occupy valuable workspace, are inflexible in their configuration and usage, carry a high risk of congestion, require a minimum size to be profitable, are difficult to scale etc., so that they often turn out to be either over- or under-dimensioned. The paradoxical consequence is that they can end up conditioning the whole production process or plant layout. And all this after a huge financial investment.

Singular Logistics has brought the logic of individual transportation to the world of material handling

The SL1-50 is an aerial material handling system with independent transportation carts. The carts are equipped with an artificial intelligence allowing them to autonomously calculate and continuously adapt the route according to priorities and traffic conditions. By giving an order on a touch screen device, the cart will come, pick up the material and transport it to the destination, the carts can also be programmed to perform a certain task on a schedule basis. During their mission the carts interact among each other and constantly exchange real-time information of the transportation circuit. Essentially they act as taxi drivers, who autonomously decide and adapt the best route once they have received an order from a customer. Thanks to this ability, no central control system is needed. This reduces significantly the investment cost and keeps the system extremely flexible for future adaptations. Additionally the SL1-50 has the big advantage that it hangs from the ceiling instead of using valuable workspace on the floor.

Each cart is able to transport up to 50 kg and has a maximum speed of 1.5 m/sec. The SL1-50 is perfectly scalable from very small production or logistic plants, up to large mass production plants. The transportation capacity of the entire system depends on the amount of carts in the circuit, and is consequently completely adjustable to customer needs. The system can be complemented by a series of optional accessories, like automated storage systems, elevators or various hook types. The product is worldwide patented.

AerialThe SL1-50 is an aerial system which can either hang from the ceiling, be mounted on the walls or be installed with columns on the floor. In all cases it frees up valuable working space, which can be dedicated to the production process instead of material handling.

Changing Driving Lane “the jump”One of the highlights of the SL1-50 is the ability to “jump“ from one IPE 100 beam to the other, once two beams are parallel to each other the cart can perform a swing which changes the driving lane, as indicated the images below and on the left. This gives the carts the opportunity to choose among different possible routes and to even modify the route according to the incoming real-time news received from the other carts in the circuit. The system essentially acts like a GPS navigation system with traffic updates, which modifies the route if it detects an incident or traffic jam.

Artificial IntelligenceEach cart of the SL1-50 is equipped with a sophisticated artificial intelligence which allows them to autonomously execute its transportation command. The carts receive an order of pick-up and delivery and calculate the best route to reach their destination.

As they communicate with each other, the carts constantly receive real-time updates of the traffic conditions in the circuit as well as information of new transportation orders, and they independently decide the optimal route as well as its priorities. At the same time they autonomously drive to the parking position(s) in case of no pending orders.

The carts are able to autonomously detect malfunctions of the cart itself and of the circuit. This functionality has been adopted from the automotive sector, where cars are able to detect and inform the driver

when they need maintenance. The difference with the SL1-50 system is, that the carts directly drive on their own to the maintenance position, informing previously about their arrival. The intelligence of the systems allows an absenteeism of a central control system.

VersatileThe SL1-50 is able to transport different goods of various sizes and forms. Singular Logistics has developed a ”Standard hook” (image on the left) which is designed to transport Euroboxes, without the need to stop at pick-up or delivery. The system is designed to allow adaptation to other types of hooks for specific loads. Singular Logistics will provide a solution for any type of material.Due to the fact that the SL1-50 system is an overhead solution, the material needs to be lifted to the level of the carts. Singular Logistics provides different solutions for that. An elevation hook (images on the right) and different regular lifts. The lift, including the elevation hook, can be aligned to the needs of the material handling requirements.

The SL1-50 is easily installed as well as expanded in the future if required. To further simplify the installation, Singular Logistics has developed a beam assembly system based on an anchoring mechanism which doesn’t require any on site welding, but basic tools only.

Easy Installation & Expansion

The material handling capacity of the SL1-50 depends on the amount of carts implemented in the system. It is therefore perfectly suitable for any amount of material handling requirements. Furthermore it does not require a minimum size of installation. Consequently, the SL1-50 goes hand in hand with the evolution of the material handling requirements of the production process without ever interrupting or conditioning it. The system is never under- nor over-dimensioned, but always correctly sized, it literally grows with the evolution of the company.

To guarantee the safety of all employees and machines, Singular Logistics provides a simple protection mesh which is installed directly on the anchor points of the installation.As the rest of the installation, the mesh too is designed to be installed without the need of welding.

The use of standard elements such as regular IPE 100 beams, instead of sophisticated and expensive infrastructure, such as pricey turnable conveyors, reduces significantly the investment. The absence of a complex central control system reduces the infrastructure cost even further.The investment cost of the SL1-50 is mainly linked to the size of the circuit and the amount of carts. The quantity of carts depends on the material handling requirements. The perfect scalability of the SL1-50 allows to easily forecast the financial requirements and to keep investment costs under control.

As easy as pressing a button. The SL1-50 system does not require any central control system. All carts in the system operate independent. At each delivery or pick up point in the system a control unit with a touch screen can be installed, which is operated quick and easy. To order carts or to send finished goods to the next step in the value chain. The software is kept simple which allows quick adoption by the staff. Additionally the SL1-50 system can be aligned with software like Galileo and SGA/ERP‘s in order to program the material flow. The SGA, ERP or SCADA communicates directly with a base station in order to send the signals to the carts.
