Neighborhood is alsoexcited to be piloting a new musicprogram for the residents.Pre-recorded music is played foreach specific activity of their dayincluding meals and crafts. Theresidents really appear to enjoy itand there also seems to be a lot ofdancing happening in theNeighborhood lately!Wishing you and yours a happy andhealthy Holiday Season!

Holidays and DepressionFor most of us, the holidays are
a time to get together with friendsand family, celebrate and reflecton the past and plan for thefuture. However, for some, especially seniors, the holidayscan be a very difficult time. Olderadults may feel the passing oftime, the absence of parents, aspouse, friends, and the distanceof loved ones who live far away.Traditional celebrations from thepast may not be possible anymoreand the holidays may seem to losetheir meaning. It is normal to feelreflective and sad during times ofchange and loss, especially duringthe holiday season. But familymembers, friends and caregiversmay notice that some may beexperiencing more than just the“Holiday blues”...
Major Factors contributing toHoliday Depression in olderadults are: financial limitations, loss of independence, being aloneor separated from loved ones, failing eyesight that lessens abilityto write or read holidaycorrespondence, and loss ofmobility and the inability to shopor attend religious services.
Tips to overcome the HolidayBlues:
1. Accept and express yourfeelings. There is nothing wrongwith not feeling happy during theholidays; many people feel thesame way. Talking about yourfeelings can help you understand
why you feel the way you do.2. Recognize the signs of
depression: sadness, sleepingmore often, a change in appetite.Talk to your health care providerabout treatments for depression.
3. Participate in activities atchurch or in your neighborhood, put on a pot of coffee and inviteyour neighbor over. You will beglad you did.
4. Remember to eat healthy andparticipate in your exercise classes.Take a walk; sunshine makes thesoul healthy and happy.
5. When a family memberoffers to take you shopping orasks to join you for lunch, acceptthe invitation.
6. This may be a good time tostart a project that you have beenputting off: start a scrapbookhonoring your loved one ormemories from holidays past
Stay Active: It is important torealize that while the holidayblues may be difficult, it istemporary. If you or your lovedone is seriously depressed formore than two weeks, get help.Ups and downs in mood arenormal. While the holidays maynot be the same as they were inthe past, there can still be reasonsto celebrate. One of the mostimportant things to remember isthat it is okay to enjoy theholidays as they are now.Memories hold a special place inyour heart, but the heart hasenough room to add newmemories.
