James’ NoteA Competitive Spirit
Just think about all thecompetition in the world today.Every month it seems like we, as asociety, are celebrating onecompetition or another. Whetherit’s the Super Bowl, the AcademyAwards, NCAA and MarchMadness, the World Series, the USOpen (both tennis and golf), weall want a winner.
During the month of May weare going to celebrate and root fora winner during yet anothercompetition: the Kentucky Derby(check calendar for details)! Eventhe hats people wear during theKentucky Derby have acompetitive edge.
I, myself, love a greatcompetition - whether it’s on thetennis court or out running a 1/2or full marathon. I’m not doingeither for money, but I love thecompetition with myself andothers and the training it takes tomaster the race.
The goals people create in lifecan be anything from losingweight, to saving money for a newhome, or to learn a new language. It’s like we are always in a state ofcompetition, each and every day.
So what are your goals for theyear? Do you have a fancy hat towear for the Kentucky Derby orare you going to make one to
compete with the other residents?Whatever you choose to competefor, give it your all and your best;good things will come from it. I’llsee you out there ~ James

OccupationalTherapy Month
Occupational Therapy istherapy based on performing themeaningful activities of dailyliving (self-care skills, education, work and social skills), especiallyto enable or enhance participationin such activities despiteimpairments or limitations inphysical or mental functioning.
Occupational therapists areskilled professionals. Theireducation includes the study ofhuman growth and development, with specific emphasis on thesocial, emotional and physicaleffects of illness and injury. Theyare unique, in that they look atthe whole picture when it comesto a person’s treatment.
They look at the person’sabilities, task to be performed, and the environment in which thetask is to take place.
The older adult benefits fromoccupational therapy becausetheir goal is to assist withregaining or maintaining a level inindependence that will allowthem to age in place for as long aspossible. Occupational therapyhas been proven effective forseniors living with variousmedical conditions or recoveringfrom surgery. In addition toworking with individuals toincrease strength or regain
important life supporting skills, occupational therapists workthroughout the community, counseling families, localgovernments, and communitygroups to ensure that each isdoing what it can to help olderadults maintain theirindependence.
Belmont Village offers bothoccupational therapy and physicaltherapy services. Our WellnessCenter nurses work closely withour therapists to identify thoseresidents who would benefit fromthese therapies and contacts thefamilies and physicians tocoordinate care.
We encourage, educate andpromote healthy living.

On First Viewing Antarctica
Behind sun-spangled mist therelooms the last great wilderness on
Earth, Antarctica! Wild blackrocks, summits lost in clouds,
arise from valleys deep in ancientsnow. We leave the safety of our
ship for Zodiacs and float onheaving seas. Dolphins flip and
dive, in love with Zodiacs, and we,enchanted pilgrims, are divertedfrom our awe, in brief reprieve, before we plunge into a land of
heroes, Amundson and Byrd andShackleton and Cook, hearts left
behind this, the cruelest mostunconquerable place on earth.Guides warn of danger in the
innocence of snow; hallucinatingin the dreamlike world of ice; ofwandering where there are no
lands and no paths; of slipping offthe known into the eternity.
We board the Zodiac, exhaustedby the wonder. Of this continent,a universe where evil is unknown.Whose austere beauty has escaped
intrusive touch.
